24.01.2022 GET READY FOR SUMMER With all this talk about this Summer being one of the wetest with La Nina event, we are expecting greater number of mozzies. With several clients of mine and lots of horses in the region suffering from Ross River Fever over the last 12 months, thought I would share some preventative information with you all. RRF in horses can be mild to severe and lasting, please refer to previous post shared from Elite Equine. So besides rugging and insect spray we hav...e been experimenting on our property over the last 4 to 5 years. We have had a lot of success with using fish in our troughs for mozzie control and have noticed a significant decrease. We first picked up this idea in our travels to US as it is very commonly used in parks that support horse riding. Like everything, we have learnt during the process what works better and i am happy to share further details with anyone keen to help minimise our mozzie population and therefor minimise how many horses are infected with this Virus. If a few people keen I will do a further post on what things we have found to work to limit loss of your fish and other details. Or just text or call me. If we can limit some mozzies hopefully we can stop some of our ponies contracting this virus.

24.01.2022 Billy This boy is so cruizy. He will make a great versatile horse that is super keen. Turning 3 in October, so 18 months before we put him under saddle. First time playing with the tyres. Enjoying his ground work way too much.

18.01.2022 Just wanted to put a photo of a piece the lovely Shirley Henderson did for Russell on Hoss. The photo does not do it justice. This is the 3rd piece we have of Shirley's and every time I am blown away with what she captures. Yes I did cry as per norm when I saw it. and I knew it was coming as I organised for Russell. Local amazing talent cannot recommend her enough for capturing what your four legged friend means to you.

17.01.2022 Covid restrictions. Thank you everyone that has been texting and calling re return of lessons, bringing horses and Clinics. Still waiting for clarification. From what I can see for other industries in particular personal training allowing outside training with 2 people , it looks pretty positive i would say if within 5 km. Normally takes a few days before they provide clarity for our industry. Will post as soon as I see something or if someone else does let me know. Hope you are all doing well. Hopefully catch up with everyone soon and we can get back out there with our ponies.

09.01.2022 Hey, hope you are all surviving these trying times. With the update below I am not allowed to teach unless your horse is already here. So for any of my clients feel free to call me or send me videos if you want. Give your ponies an extra cuddle.

09.01.2022 Same for horses I think...............

09.01.2022 Happy Mother's Day The best experiences and the hardest at times for all. Enjoy your day.

09.01.2022 This is my only account with a blue tick. If you are approached or commented on by any one else - eg Charlie Mackesy Chat - it’s a fraud. Please report and ignore. Apologies for this.

08.01.2022 Just thought I would share this to my clients if you weren't already aware of current guidelines....u can still see your ponies.

08.01.2022 Just thought would put a few happy snaps up. First time Russell and I have ridden bush together on our own horses for a few years now. Both boys green but both tried their best and coped with deer, dogs, and other horses going by. Very trusting and soft boys. It was a very nostalgic moment and a few years in the making. I felt we had all the horses we have lost over the last few years and the gammy ones still in the paddock with us in spirit. It was like we had so many souls all happy just to be out again. I know it sounds weird, but anyone that has been through a lot of tragedy probably knows what I'm on about ( or maybe it's just me). Either way, great day to start our first bush ride together with these beautiful boys. Many many more to come.....

03.01.2022 Hmmmmmm.........looks like still no lessons until Stage 3.

03.01.2022 Ross River Virus (RRV) is a mosquito-borne virus that generally affects horses and humans, but can also cause infection in dogs, cats, possums and marsupials. R...RV is well established amongst populations of kangaroo and wallabies (who do not show any symptoms) along the Eastern coast, particularly hot, high-rainfall areas like Queensland. Horses are particularly at risk after flooding, as mosquitos love stagnant water. Although RRV is considered rare in Victoria, we have seen several cases of RRV in horses in the last few months and the increasing prevalence is being monitored. In the acute phase (3-5 days) after infection, a wide range of symptoms is reported, including: Fever Generalised joint pain/stiffness Lower limb swelling or fluid under chest High inflammatory markers (fibrinogen and serum amyloid A) in bloods After this initial infection, there can be variable and lasting effects including: Lethargy and poor performance Anaemia Variable appetite +/- mild colic signs Lack of co-ordination or neurological signs Low grade, non-specific lameness Some horses bounce back very quickly and there is no specific treatment. We use anti-inflammatories in the acute phase and can use supplements to support immune function ongoing. Testing for antibodies (the immune response) in blood confirmed diagnosis of RRV. However, taking two blood samples 2-6 weeks apart will confirm RECENT infection with the virus, as horses can remain antibody-positive for an extended period of time so a one-off test is not always that useful. Rigorous mosquito control is critical for reducing risk of transmission, including insect repellent and properly fitting rugs. Although theoretically possible, horse to horse transmission (via mosquitos) is not considered a significant source of infection and kangaroos/wallabies are still the main reservoir host. Despite the lack of specific treatment, getting a definitive diagnosis can be very useful for managing these horses.
