22.01.2022 KARATE ETIQUETTE Karate training would not be complete without the practice of etiquette, as it helps to establish the right way of doing things and develops di...scipline as well as respect, particularly in younger students. The very first thing we learn, even before we start our karate training, is how to bow when we enter the training hall (dojo). We do this as a sign of respect for the instructors and the learning environment in general. Lining up at the start of the class, especially for students doing their first class, can cause a lot of confusion. Here are some tips to help ease the confusion. Lines should be straight, yes, this is simple in theory and sometimes it’s hard to do. You should always line up in grade order, highest grade at the right end and beginners at the left end. Those with orange and yellow tips, are ranked higher than those without on the same coloured belt. For safety reasons, all jewellery is to be removed prior to training eg watches, rings, earrings, facial piercings, chains. Fingernails and toenails should be kept clean and well manicured. Out of respect for fellow students, a high level of personal hygiene should be adhered to by all members. Whilst these seem like little things, they all add up to a happy, respectful and safe place for us all to do what we love, karate. Enjoy your training Region 18.

22.01.2022 UPDATE! Due to circumstances beyond our control, the scheduled first class back at Newcomb Dojo (24th June) has been postponed until further notice. The upside is we will still have our live online dojo running until then. See you there

21.01.2022 Dear GKR students and families, 2020 has been an extraordinary year, filled with many unexpected twists and turns. We thank you for your patience as our classes... closed and openedand closed again in various parts of the world. Despite the chaos, the events of this year have no doubt made us more resilient and reminded us not to take our good health for granted. Our thoughts are with those who have been adversely affected by the events of this year and we thank everyone who has been working on the frontlines providing health care or other essential services throughout the most difficult times. On behalf of everyone at GKR Karate, we would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a safe, healthy and Happy New Year. Our first day back for classes next year is January the 4th. Please check with your local dojo for reopening dates. We look forward to seeing you in 2021!

To be in with a shout of the prize, we want sensei and students to show off their GKR Karate gi outside of class. Whether wearing a gi to make a cup of tea or climb a tree, simply share a photo or video with us via email ([email protected]) or social media by May 14th. 18.01.2022 Hello to all GKR Karate instructors, As we come to the end of this most unusual year, I’d like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank every one of you for ...the loyalty, support and commitment you’ve shown to both the club and your students this year. Whether it was putting your hand up to run some Zoom classes, staying in touch with your students during class closures, modifying your class structures and protocols to conform with Covid-safe directives, or just being available to resume your teaching role as soon as we could re-open after lockdowns...your enthusiasm for making the best out of a difficult situation has been remarkable. If this year has brought about any positives, then by far the most encouraging one for Kancho and I has been seeing the team spirit of the GKR Karate community in action across the country (and around the world). You’ve all played an important role in keeping everything and everybody connected over these past 6+ months and for this we feel truly humbled and extremely grateful. I hope that you and your families can enjoy a safe and relaxing Christmas, and best wishes for the New Year ahead. Kind regards, Gavin Samin Assistant Chief Instructor GKR Karate

16.01.2022 Don't miss your chance to join the Okinawan Karate Masters at GKR Karates Okinawa Online Experience 2020! As you may know, GKR Karate organises trips to Okinaw...a every two years. Being the birthplace of karate, multiple seminars with various masters of various traditional karate styles are organised. The aim of this, beyond the cultural experience, is to expose our students to countless principles, techniques and applications. This year we had over 100 excited students, ready to join five Karate Masters at Naha's Budokan in August. With the unforeseen and unprecedented lockdowns caused by COVID-19, the 2020 trip has been postponed until further notice. As disappointing as this is, it also presents a unique opportunity! With the arrival of Zoom and live online classes, for the first time in history, students will be able to gain the rich experience of Okinawa Karate without the need to invest considerable time and money required for international travel. We have organised a number of ONLINE seminars on Sunday 21 June, with 100% of money from sales going directly to the Okinawan Masters. Okinawa is a beautiful island which relies heavily on tourism for income. This is GKR's way of helping to minimise the financial burden that has been caused by the lockdowns, and also provides all of our students with the opportunity to learn from the Master's wealth of experience and knowledge. Don't miss this fantastic opportunity to train with the Masters! Secure your spot by registering at https://onlinedojo.gkrkarate.com/gkr-okinawa-experience-2020

10.01.2022 Thanks to Sensei Jess from GKR Karate Region 22 Christchurch, New Zealand for these wise words. Share your Sensei Love in the comments. What does a Sensei d...o? My Sensei doesn’t just teach me karate. My Sensei is my role model. Someone who has already walked the path I want to go. My Sensei is my motivator. They inspire me to push to points I never thought I could reach. My Sensei is my coach. They help me through the toughest times in my journey. My Sensei is my drill sergeant. They keep me in line, on task to achieve my goals. My Sensei is my biggest fan. They believe in me when I struggle to believe in myself. My Sensei teaches me integrity, discipline, and the highest standards of personal character. My Sensei teaches me to fail, and they teach me to stand back up again, to never give up. My Sensei teaches me to show respect and courtesy to all who walk this earth. My Sensei teaches me to be calm and in control, responsible always for my behaviour. My Sensei teaches me to be faithful and sincere in all that I do. My Sensei doesn’t just teach me karate. My Sensei prepares me for life.

10.01.2022 This video is courtesy of GKR Karate Videos - like the page to see new content as soon as it's released! ***** 21 Ways to throw a Jab. ... This video covers the jab in a self-defence situation. We have also made the same video, however for a tournament situation. Instructors often teach one way to Jab, but we must remember in combat, everything we do must be governed by our opponent (their size, their tactics, their skillsets etc). As such, it's not just a matter of switching techniques when something is not working, but also switching strategies WITHIN each technique. One way to jab may work sometimes, but what if your opponent has an impenetrable guard? What if they like to slip? What if they have excellent counter-striking skills? What if, when you jab, they like to drop and tackle you to the ground? What if they they like to move forward, to smother your attack and grab you? Each of the 5 dominant animal styles of Southern Shaolin (Tiger, White Crane, Serpent, Dragon and Leopard) has a vastly different physical approach, a vastly different tactical approach and a vastly different technical approach. Having a basic understanding of these 5 animal styles gives us a major advantage because: We are able to select techniques and strategies that suit our body type (we dont all have the same strength, speed etc) We are able to identify our opponent's animal, and quickly choose an animal (technical, tactical etc) to respond with more chance of success. We are able to switch animals in both attack and defence, making us unpredictable. It also keeps training an adventure, with completely different ways to practice every technique in your karate arsenal. Check out onlinedojo.gkrkarate.com for a number of videos relating to adapting principles of the 5 dominant animal styles out of Fujian China (the area that influenced the development of karate.)

09.01.2022 Our November gradings are well underway but we'd like to take a moment to congratulate everyone who graded throughout October! For those of you in lockdown in the UK, and other areas who are currently unable to train in the dojo, keep up your home training and stay strong. We hope to see you back in the dojo very soon!

06.01.2022 Because life is too short to live someone else's dream.

04.01.2022 Attention to all Australian students and instructors: Id like to update you all on a recent decision weve made about our tournament schedule for the remainder... of 2020. Given the ongoing health concerns and the likely hesitation many people may have to travel as a result of the Coronavirus situation, we have decided not to hold a GKR Karate Australian Titles in 2020. As you know, it has been a tradition of GKRs for the last 20+ years to hold a National tournament at the end of each year, but the probable lack of interstate entries would have greatly diminished its national status. What we will do instead is push our State Titles back to November (instead of September) and these will become the major end-of-year event on the GKR competition calendar in 2020. This will give all regions the chance to hold some local tournaments in September/October in the lead up to the November State Champs. Your Regional Instructor will keep you updated regarding this in the coming weeks. Thank you for your understanding.
