25.01.2022 A great factsheet from the team at PreKure, a NZ based lifestyle medicine Organization, looking at the evidence around supplements and COVID -19. Weve noticed that some supermarkets have sold out of high-dose vitamin C, and pharmacists tell us that herbal antiviral supplements and other immunity aids, like Buccaline Berna (an oral vaccine against common bacterial complications of colds and flu) are in high demand. In this fact-sheet well answer some of your questions arou...nd COVID-19 prevention and risk: What is the evidence for supplements in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19? What is the evidence around metabolic risk factors? Is there any evidence that commonly used medications increase risk? See more

25.01.2022 Maybe you can help some medical students with research about Yoga.

23.01.2022 Dr John Hall pleads with Australians to stay home this Easter. He says rural hospitals have limited resources and says people "could die" waiting to be moved to an ICU in the city.

22.01.2022 Just Eat Real Food.

21.01.2022 Pros and cons to using the Pill. A wonderful invention for women to control their fertility, but there are things to consider.

20.01.2022 Here is a presentation by Ivor Cummins, who is an Engineer on "Avoiding and Resolving Modern Chronic Disease". Its about 30 mins and a little science-y, and I think all my Engineer patients (especially) will appreciate its reasoned, clear approach. NEM aims to give you the knowledge and strategies to add more life to your years. yours in health,... Dr Barb

20.01.2022 Please consider donating to the ACNEM regional scholarship fund. I have found that Training in NEM when situated regionally has been expensive and sometimes a lonely endeavour. Trips to training in Melbourne, Auckland, Hobart and Sydney all have the added expense of the GLT-BNE +/- overnight stay as no connecting flights. Corridor chats with senior colleagues to nut out problems isn’t possible like it is in the purpose built clinics in the big smoke. I have a only few more... steps to go towards my fellowship, and I don’t need a scholarship, but it would be hugely helpful to a young GP wanting to train in Nutritional and Environmental Medicine. Just think! You could help ‘clone’ Dr Barb! Help get more NEM trained doctors to the regions! TIA. Dr Barb.

19.01.2022 I agree wholeheartedly with Stacey’s take on dietary diversity. A win-win for us, our primary producers, and our planet.

18.01.2022 We know that suicide prevention is an enormously complex and sensitive challenge the world over. But we also know that some of the worlds smartest people have ...been working tirelessly and developed credible theories that suggest theres power in that simplest of questions - Are you OK? By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you have noticed, you could help that person open up. Always remember to ask - R U OK? If you are not ok, please seek help... You are worth it. https://www.ruok.org.au/ https://www.beyondblue.org.au/?&scp=true

17.01.2022 A beautiful story for our little and not so little ones.

14.01.2022 A colleague has written 27 points about surviving Coronavirus. I would add: 28: keep your lungs healthy. Be a non smoker, eat nutritious food, keep on top of asthma or other chronic lung disease, prioritise sleep. 29: because it is so important....... keep your germs to yourself.

14.01.2022 This answers lots of questions that my patients have been asking. Stay home/ keep a safe distance Wash your hands... Eat real food Prioritise sleep Careful supplementation. See you safe and healthy on the other side.

13.01.2022 What a wonderful story... congratulations Lew!

12.01.2022 https://www.gladstonenem.com.au Im very pleased to be able to tell you that my Nutrition and Environmental Medicine Gladstone website has been launched. I hope that you can take the time to have a look and perhaps let me know about any topics that you are interested in hearing about in the future. yours in Health, Dr Barb

12.01.2022 A great initiative for the health of the young people in our community.

12.01.2022 Bel Smith and her webpage "The Root Cause" and her fantastic Mad Food Science program is all about making it easier for families to empower their children to make real food choices. Several times a week, I encourage families to transition away from breakfast cereals - having real protein and healthy fats and carbs in the form of nutritious real food in kids tummies sets them up for a busy day at school (or home, or sports). My job just got easier with this excellent post wit...h sensible ways to go about this change. The food ideas also work for busy grown-ups as well! Embrace the deliciousness that is real food. Oh, and if you are able to have a chat to your school about bringing the Mad food science program to your area, Bel has her team of educators ready to help you get on board. She has a webinar organised for Thursday 14th November: https://go.therootcause.com.au/webinar-mfsp-2020/ Dr Barb.

12.01.2022 Heading home after a big weekend in Sydney learning about treating Chronic Inflammation with Functional Medicine. Topics included Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. Lots of Aha! Moments. Here is a picture with one of the lecturers, Dr Antony Underwood (Paediatrician, MBBS Syd, FRACP), who spoke about The Connective Tissue Disorders.

11.01.2022 Here's a little weekend reading for you..... Check out the University of Queensland's Institute for Molecular Bioscience's Magazine on Inflammation - especially the articles on inflammation and diet. 1. a real foods diet 2.being a non smoker... 3. Maintaining a healthy weight 4. Exercising regularly 5. Manage stress. Yours in health. Dr Barb https://imb.uq.edu.au/the-edge/inflammation

11.01.2022 Just the other day I was talking to a shift worker, about the lack of research in to on- call type shifts. Maybe you can help

10.01.2022 Do your bit to reduce the chance of another outbreak. These things continue to be important. When out and about, and as you return home: Wash your hands. Avoid touching your face.... Stay 2m away from people who are not in your bubble. Youll see at the Superclinic, we have things in place to protect you and our staff: Perspex screens at reception, telephone checks to make sure you are well on the day of your appointment, with Tele-medicine options and clinic review if required in a special room if youre not. Staff have their temperature taken daily. Social distancing in the waiting rooms. In my consulting room, I am washing my hands, sanitising medical equipment, patient seats and door handles during and between consultations, and wearing my mask, glasses, cap and gown. A proportion of my consultations are via Telehealth. Am I over it? Absolutely! The mask, especially, is uncomfortable, and all the extra washing and cleaning disturbs my workflow. But I would rather do this than have a patient harmed by COVID on my watch. Stay Safe Dr Barb.

10.01.2022 Im Dr Barbara Panitz, a wife and mother of two who also happens to be a well established GP in a beautiful Queensland Costal town. I have lived and worked in Gladstone since 1998. During that time, while looking after hundreds of pregnant ladies and delivering their babies and watching them grow, I became intrigued by the developmental origins of health and disease, and came to an understanding that true preventative health lies in changing the environment in which we grow and develop, right from preconception through to old age. I am grateful for my medical training and strong grounding in general practice, which is a solid foundation on which to build my growing knowledge of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine. I am a GP first, and the NEM information builds upon what I would do for a patient as a GP.

10.01.2022 A reminder that appointments are available this week via HotDoc, my website and reception at the Gladstone GP Superclinic. https://www.hotdoc.com.au/ https://www.gladstonenem.com.au/

09.01.2022 What a wonderful book Dr Emilia has written! Mostly written for people who have experienced a life- changing illness, but I think we can all learn from her wisdom. I must admit I binge read it this afternoon, but I think I will re- read it slowly and work through each chapter as she recommends. Namaste, Dr Barb.

09.01.2022 https://youtu.be/uATL44_wQtE. The Reign of Pain Lies Mainly in the Brain A thought provoking, gentle discussion about why chronic pain happens by Dr Howard Schubiner, MD. ... Pain is made by nerve pathways in the brain. Sometimes the pathway gets stuck, and the pain persists despite the original cause resolving. Perhaps this message can help someone you know. Dr Barb.

08.01.2022 A message we all need to hear and share. Human health is in jeopardy along with the planets health. Taking care of the planet has many knock-on benefits for health.

07.01.2022 Perfect timing for a reminder. This is true for anyone, not just children. How are you feeling during this busy season? Thanks Our Mama Village

06.01.2022 To say that we all have some significant concerns right now is an understatement. Were worried about how long this dystopian period in all of our lives is goin...g to last, how were going to pay our bills, and what life post-COVID-19 is going to look like. And of course, we all worry if we or a loved one is going to get sick, if so when, and just how sick we or they- might get. Its as If were all just in a collective breath-hold on this. The people closest to me who have gotten sick, all of whom have had mild cases of COVID-19, have expressed a palpable feeling of relief because for them at least, for the moment, the anticipation of that unknown is gone: theyve had it, its cycled through their household, and, at least for now, they are alive and well. While at this moment who will get sick- and how sick seems to be almost a lottery there are certain risk factors that appear to increase our chances of getting sick and very sick our frequency and intensity of exposure to the virus (i.e., less likely if youre working from and sheltering at home versus being say, an emergency room doctor) and whether we have underlying medical conditions (asthma, immunosuppression due to an illness or medication used to treat an illness, diabetes, and heart or lung disease, for example). We also know that 85% of us who do contract this infection will have only a mild case, similar to cold symptoms or perhaps more moderate similar to flu symptoms; many, however, have not been and will not be so lucky. But given that there are no known treatments at this time, is there anything you can do to support your health should you get sick? Heres what we know.

05.01.2022 I really like Megan Rossis guidelines around gut health. And she is a University of Queensland alumni as an extra bargain. Enjoy.

05.01.2022 Please be advised we have re-opened online appointments for telephone appointments ONLY at this stage. Understandably our Reception staff have been inundated wi...th phone calls during this time, so again we ask for patience if you are ringing our surgery. Online appointments can be made at: https://www.hotdoc.com.au//gladstone-gp-superclinic/doctors

04.01.2022 Please be advised of the following measures being implemented in the Gladstone GP Superclinic, in regards to the COVID-19 Virus (Coronavirus). * Online bookings... are not available at this time. This is to ensure that we can screen each patient prior to their appointment being made. We are then able to determine which access to health care is most appropriate for each individual patient. These include, telephone and telehealth consultations. * Every patient will be telephoned and screened on the day, prior to their appointment within the surgery. This is to ensure that anyone that may be in the risk category, is attended to appropriately. * Any patients that have travelled overseas within the last month OR been in contact with someone who has travelled overseas in the last month OR has cold or flu symptoms OR have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, must NOT present to our surgery. Phone triage will be conducted and the best course of care will be determined from that point. * All toys have been removed from our surgery to assist with infection control. * The latest advice from QLD Health stipulates that ONLY people that are in the risk category are to be referred for COVID-19 swab testing, due to a world wide shortage. * If you believe you may be at risk of contracting COVID-19 due to your individual health or family conditions, please contact the surgery for further advice. The health care of our patients and our staff is our main priority. Please know our phones will be busier and there may be a wait to reach our Reception staff. We appreciate your patience as this time. Our Practice Plan will be reviewed daily to ensure that it is compliant with the latest recommendations from QLD Health. Thank you, Management

02.01.2022 With best wishes for a Safe and Happy 2020. During the past few weeks I have had the opportunity to consult with some young adults, as they have returned to family for Christmas Celebrations, and come to see me for issues of concern to them. These are people whose conception I celebrated and first breath I witnessed, back when I was a young GP Obstetrician who had more than one patient ask - "are you old enough to do this?", prompting my husband to have my certificates frame...d so I could display them outside my room at the Windmill Medical Centre. I treasure these opportunities for continued care and am humbled that these young men and women chose to return to see me. Even as I work toward my Nutritional and Environmental Medicine Goals, I will continue to allocate appointments to regular, everyday General Practice, including "on the day" appointments for urgent matters, accessed via reception.

01.01.2022 Please be advised that the Gladstone GP Superclinic will close their doors from 1pm to 3pm today. Our phones will be diverted to our after hours message between... 1.30pm and 2.30pm. As with all Health Workers, the last few months have been quite stressful and the GGPSC team have provided an amazing amount of support and healthcare to our community. 01.01.2022 Finishing up a great weekend learning about hot topics in childrens health and meeting like minded doctors and allied health practitioners.
