15.01.2022 The RSL Boyne Tannum Sub Branch will be remembering the 75th VJ Day anniversary, the end of World War II, with a wreath laying commemoration 11am, Saturday, 15 August, at the Boyne Island Stirling Park Cenotaph. VP (Victory in the Pacific) Day, also referred to as VJ (Victory over Japan) Day, is celebrated annually on 15 August. This date commemorates Japans acceptance of the Allied demand for unconditional surrender 14 August 1945. For Australians, it meant that the Second... World War was finally over. The following day, 15 August, is usually referred to as VP Day. In August 1945 Australian governments gazetted a public holiday as VP Day and most newspapers reported it as such. However, the governments of Britain, the United States and New Zealand preferred VJ Day. It is not true, as some have claimed, that the day was originally called VJ and that the name was surreptitiously changed later. (Source - www.awm.gov.au/articles/encyclopedia/vp_day) A temporary exhibition has been installed at the Gladstone City Library to support VJ Day and to remember those who bravely fought for our Nation.

04.01.2022 #FlashbackFriday today takes us back to the end of World War ll. Victory Day was celebrated by what must have been the entire population of the town. It began on 15 August 1945 with a united thanksgiving service in front of the town hall and then an impressive procession of returned men and women and the Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC). On this and the following day rejoicing knew no bounds. Gladstone let itself go and the noise of tin cans tied behind cars was a deafenin...g but joyous noise. The Observer described the celebration as quite spontaneous and a genuine outburst of the feeling of the people. Even so, citizens in their quieter moments paid homage to those who had sacrificed their lives their own or their neighbours sons and daughters. On the second day a basket picnic was held at Barney Point, with free soft drinks for the children. That night people spontaneously danced in the streets and there was open air community singing with Mrs. J. Busteed and Miss D Fraser at the keyboards of the hastily produced piano, aided by G. Fry and R. Brennan on the drums. extract GladstoneCity that waited by Lorna McDonald https://www.awm.gov.au/articles/encyclopedia/vp_day Image: World War ll Victory Day celebrations 1945 Norris family collection Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum
