25.01.2022 When Nadella became the CEO of Microsoft in 2014 the company needed a serious reboot: stock price had fallen, employees were not collaborating and product development had stalled. The culture needed to change. Nadella used a single metaphor to guide change: Carol Dwecks growth mindset rather than a fixed mind set. He focused on 3 pillars of the new strategic direction: customer obsession, diversity and inclusion. He introduced changes to how decisions were made, performance was evaluated and how leaders were expected to behave. Empathy and respect were high priorities and he modeled this behaviour. Lie #2, regarding Plans Vs Intelligence, especially resonated with me. In the video, Marcus states "The most detailed plans ensure that you're engaging with the recent past as it recently was." I want to posit that the lie is even worse than that.... Coming from a background in CRM (Customer Relationship Management), I have seen sales and marketing plans created that show little to no understanding of the client base with which they are working. Or have created complex management reports from their data that provides little additional insight. Their plans are a work of art that takes into account the internal questions of costs, designs, and timings of their marketing rather than looking more closely at the customer segments and desires. They religiously follow the Pareto principle (otherwise known as the 80-20 rule - where 80% of sales comes from 20% of customers). So they design systems that appeal to their biggest customers rather than asking the integrative question if it might produce better returns to focus their goals on increasing the bottom 80%. One of the challenges in the CRM industry is making business intelligence more useful and instantly available to those who need it to inform their decisions. The use of dashboards and other tools that pull data from multiple resources and display it in an easy-to-digest and easy-to-customise format to provide that necessary intelligence should be a goal for all businesses.
