24.01.2022 A sculptural side table made many moons ago, residing at my brothers home with one of his favourite indoor plants atop. Handcrafted from salvaged Redgum & Blackwood. Thanks for the photo Jamo! ____________________________________

22.01.2022 An early Glencross project (back in the Glencross Easey St workshop days), this custom waterfall desk was made for the office of a burgeoning local fashion & lifestyle business. Blending the characterful history of salvaged Eucalypt to the calming and playful function of slimline painted drawers. Sawtooth Oregon drawer bottoms reward the curious with their hidden textural pattern. An example of where the idea of minimalism can still maintain warmth and texture in a collabora...tion of unique materials and finishes... ___________________________________ : @keelanohehir ___________________________________ #glencrossfurniture #furnituremaker #designerfurniture #madetoorder #madeforyou #tellingyourstory #deskdesign #officedesign #homeofficedesign #madeinmelbourne #australianmade #supportsmallbusiness ___________________________________ @ Albert Park, Melbourne See more

22.01.2022 A floating Stowaway drawer installed this afternoon. Custom designed for this upstairs bathroom to stash a variety of consumables. Made of Australian Eucalypt salvaged from my own home, commissioned by the builder who recently renovated for us. A nice mutual connection and story to share through familiar materials and craftsmanship...Cheers! ________________________________ @ Brunswick East, Victoria

22.01.2022 There are extra good vibes in the workshop this morning since the Promontory Dresser has been announced as a shortlisted piece in @woodreview Maker of the Year competition! It’s a real buzz to be in the mix with a bunch of impressive local makers. Cheers! __________________________________

21.01.2022 A fresh batch of Oak buttons for fixing down the dining table & matching bench seat that are in the finishing stages. Always a little fiddly and time consuming. These are pieces of handmade hardware that reflect an understanding of materials, functionality, and tradition. Also something I always say I’ll make a bucket of each year, and end up making job specific. Satisfying none the less!... __________________________________ See more

21.01.2022 The towering tapered Oak legs for a custom dining table and matching bench seat. With the tapers having been shaped, the end and side rails will be prepared for the connecting joinery... ___________________________________ #glencrossfurniture #furnituremaker #customdesign #furnituredesign #dineinstyle #craftmanship #workinprogress #madeinmelbourne ___________________________________

20.01.2022 This week Ive been working with longtime clients @shopramen to blitz a mini renovation at their Preston shop. A new partition wall was installed to streamline the dining layout, a long wall-mounted bench seat was cut down and converted into three new freestanding benches, and a slick pegboard was made and mounted for coats and merch. Word on the street is we are channeling some understated funky 70s vibes. Pat & Lydia who run this enterprise (dont forget the Fitzroy shop t...oo!) have been super supportive, and I tip my hat to their ongoing collaborations with local small business. By the way, they make damn tasty ramen too ! If you havent been, get involved. And if you have, you know where to go...Cheers! __________________________________ @ Shop Ramen Preston See more

18.01.2022 There was always going to be an element of study during my trip down the Franklin River. Its an environment of full immersion: once youre in, you are part of it. This portion of study involved collecting leaves from some of the more prominent plant species in the area. Remember the old pencil-rub tracing exercise you learned in school? Thats how I recorded the leaf shapes in case I lost my samples. From recording this information for personal use, I can better understand... their proportions, varied colour tones, scent, physical movements in changing weather conditions, and how they coexist from young saplings to ancient sentinels. Further research can then be done into their historical significance. What were they used for by the indigenous habitants and early settlers? Forever learning. Life is a constant study if you choose to experience it that way... _________________________________ @ Franklin River, Tasmania See more

17.01.2022 The dining bench seat glue-up. Combining design styles, joinery styles and finishing styles is what this workshop is about. You have your ways; some things evolve, some stay the same. At the end of the day we are making beautiful things for others (and us) to enjoy... ___________________________________

16.01.2022 Call me old school, but I love drafting custom furniture commissions by hand. Just like selecting the best pieces of timber for the job, drawing by hand allows me to directly connect to the shape, proportion and feel of a furniture piece. Theres a flexibility to make changes as I go with the swish of an eraser and scratch of a pencil. The pivot and slide of the drafting table ruler is wildly choreographed by my left hand like a mad conductor with an invisible orchestra. And... when the bones of the drawing is complete, no doubt I will improvise and transcribe whats on the page to the ever changing demands of the natural materials the lines and scribbles represent. This is an integral part of the process that helps tell the story of your furniture... __________________________________ #glencrossfurniture #australiandesign #madeinmelbourne #tellingyourstory __________________________________ See more

16.01.2022 Hey all, tomorrow morning at 8am AEST (or 6pm EST) Ill be in conversation with my mate Robert Rising as part of his series: @conversationsblacklumberjack via his home base of Yonkers, New York. Well be having an open conversation about our practices and experiences in small business. Robert has been a positive and active supporter of makers local and abroad for many years now, so if you can spare a moment to support his initiative wed all be greatly appreciative. Youll find this conversation on Instagram Live, so go to @conversationsblacklumberjack at the right time and tune in...Cheers, Julian ___________________________________

16.01.2022 A custom Folio Console returning to the workshop for modifications. This piece was made in 2017 for a designer client to keep large folio works organised and close at hand. Ill be converting the upper console and lower drawer unit into separate freestanding units. Made of American White Ash with a raw-white oil finish... __________________________________... 16.01.2022 Another custom crafted piece from the December 2019 schedule: The Harvest Dining Table. Aptly named, as it now resides in the heart of cherry & berry country, east of Melbourne. A comfortable 8-10 seater with a traditionally joined base in characterful salvaged Eucalypt, and a three-board top of gorgeous Otways Blackwood selected from the fine gentleman @woodlanderswood. These timbers sit happily on the Spotted Gum floor, and look out to a view of stunning gardens, surrounde...d by precisely designed rolling orchards. 15.01.2022 This Classic Oak desk was custom designed for a local family to complement their eclectic office furnishings. Influenced by post-war era industrial office decor which reflected a gradual shift away from embellishment towards more refined modernist ideas. Softened edge profiles and tapered feet offer tactile surfaces and elegance to solid proportions. Finished with Tobacco colour work and satin oil. Dimensions: ... 15.01.2022 A batch of Glencross Serving Paddles shaped, tagged and delivered to the local hospitality outfitters of @cargocrew for their executive Xmas 2019 gift packs. These were the mid-size, made of American white Oak, finished in food safe oil & beeswax. A classic custom product of the Glencross catalogue, clocking around 8 years in production for all the charcuterie lovers out there. 11.01.2022 A Custom Pantry delivered last weekend to the kitchen of a bright, cosy, art-filled converted warehouse in Preston. As a freestanding piece, there was a specific space that the pantry had to fit. Externally, the ghost gum white two-pack finish complemented exisiting cabinetry. The v-groove doors reflected a similar wall feature in the nearby living room. Salvaged Eucalypt details were included in the plinth, crown, and internal drawers.... Blum soft close hardware was used throughout, and Castella handles added a nice touch to the doors. Even a pair of wire spice racks was tucked in there. All in all one happy client has positively embraced the new Tardis, replacing a much maligned dysfunctional former pantry. Kitchens are the epicentre of a home. Whatever that space means to you, its worth investing in...Cheers! ___________________________________ Special thanks to @dreamcraft_interiors and Color-Tech for helping to get this over the line! ___________________________________ Project via @handkraftedco ___________________________________ @ Preston, Victoria, Australia See more

10.01.2022 Saturday morning took to me to one of my favourite leafy Melbourne suburbs: Eltham North. A custom made set of Stagger Barstools was delivered to suit an unconventionally high kitchen counter. The stools stance and foot-rail proportions were re-jigged to complement the 800mm seat height. Made of Tassie Oak, with a 1:2 raw oil/semi-matte finish to maintain that fresh Eucalypt grain tone.... 09.01.2022 The Franklin River had decent water levels last week and it was running at a solid pace. We made it to camp at Irenabyss in good time after a few portages over dicey rapid sections along the way. Here we perched in an elevated position below trails leading up to Frenchmans Cap. The magnitude of the geological features had started to sink in, with the overpowering force of Quartzite fighting with its own geometry and wrinkles. Young Huon and Myrtle trees sprout from mossy bou...lders like the bonsais of a mysterious unseen patron. The snaking bubbly foam patterns of whisked tannins in the flowing waters has become a constant companion. We were detached from civilisation, yet deeply connected to the living landscape around us... ___________________________________ @ Franklin River, Tasmania See more

09.01.2022 This Ladder Shelf Unit was custom designed for the lucky son of the same local family who commissioned the Classic Oak Desk. It is a bedroom piece for storing and displaying favourite books, toys and family photos. The clients were seeking a high quality of handcrafted joinery and finish that is not available on the market in this style. This unit has been made to suit a bedside space, with Glencross proportions that highlight the expressive Oak woodgrain. Finished with Bla...ck colour work and satin oil. 09.01.2022 This bespoke coffee table was designed and crafted to live in a Spanish Revival home in Balwyn North. Delivered during the festive season of December 2019. Featuring barley twist legs and carved rail details, there are references to other furnishings and architectural elements of the home. The black Walnut has been finished naturally, and will mellow nicely over time. Ive been fortunate to complete several pieces for this home last year, and look forward to revisiting soon... to work on some odds & ends...Cheers! ______________________________ See more

08.01.2022 Today I took a trip out to the Camberwell workshop of Jamie Neville-Young from @dealingindesign, to offer insight into my early life and influences that led me to professional furniture making. Jamie was a very accommodating host, and no doubt we couldve kept chatting for hours. Hopefully we can share the recording with you in June. Until then, check out previous interviews with a variety of Australian design heads via Apple Podcasts...Cheers! _________________________________

07.01.2022 The second stage of joinery for this custom Oak desk. It pays to rehearse the order of operation for this type of glue-up. 07.01.2022 Unpacking a batch of Mountain Ash from my old mates at @urban_salvage. I used to get out there quite a bit back when I shared a workshop in Collingwood with my buddy @redfoxandwilcoxworkshop. Today is beautifully sunny, so the drive across town to Spotswood was a treat. Especially when dropping by @candiedbakery for a takeaway Pastie & Coffee (seriously delicious!) on my way back to the workshop. Timber selection trips take time, so I like to pack a few bonus activities into... the process. Hope all the locals are enjoying this Melbourne winter sunshine...Cheers! ____________________________________ See more

07.01.2022 The Glencross Kitchen Island. Custom made for our home using recycled hardwood from our recent interior renovation. Its big, bold and can be rolled on lockable commercial grade castors. The shiplap panels complement the same design feature used in other parts of the house. Weve modernised a late 60s brick veneer, so there are a few nods to the period without being too sentimental.... Its a tough decision on what barstools are going on this side of the bench! __________________________________ Renovation by: ilconbuilding.com.au Built-in cabinetry by: @dreamcraft_interiors __________________________________ See more

04.01.2022 The bushlands and gorges that cradle the Franklin thrive on moisture. Tall stands of trees offer protection to mid-height trees, in turn supporting low-lying shrubs and ground cover. Within close proximity to the river, moss is dominant. It covers rocks, trunks, branches; dead or alive. There is constant decomposition in the soft soil. The earthy smell, the slip beneath our feet, the scattered kaleidoscope of leaves and bristles. ... We look around, down and up into the canopy; eyes wide... __________________________________ @ Franklin River, Tasmania See more

02.01.2022 These Tavern Stools were custom made to serve as side tables. Gifted from the client to his wife. Featuring alternating timbers in the sculpted legs and circular tops of salvaged Tasmanian Huon Pine & Blackwood, and Otways Blackwood. When prepared in this style, the timber work presents a primitive hand-hewn finish, with a contemporary spareness of design. A personal, functional, and curious addition to all living spaces... _________________________________
