25.01.2022 Growing up, our mothers often had to wait for us. Picking us up from band rehearsal and music lessons ... the list goes on. Despite the best of intentions, we're still a little late for our mothers, but we think they're used to it by now. We started on this project just before Mothers' Day and now we proudly pay musical tribute to our mothers, our band mums, and all mothers, past and present. Featuring Jamie Lawson on cornet and including contributions from children of the mo...thers in the band. Mums, we hope it is worth the wait. Whatever the day, Our Love is Like a Red, Red Rose. Thank you to Gerard Banner, Stuart Gunn and Elspeth Lawson for their technical wizadry. Musical arrangement by Gordon Langford. Please share this with the mothers in your life. A YouTube link is in the comments if they are not on Facebook. Lyrics/poem by Robert Burns: O my Luve's like a red, red rose That’s newly sprung in June; O my Luve's like the melodie That’s sweetly play'd in tune; As fair art thou, my bonnie lass, So deep in luve am I; And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a’ the seas gang dry; Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun; I will luve thee still, my dear, While the sands o’ life shall run. And fare thee weel, my only Luve And fare thee weel, a while! And I will come again, my Luve, Tho’ it were ten thousand mile.
23.01.2022 We're headlining The Greatest Showman (or supporting - but we're sure it's headlining!). Head down to Riversdale Park at 6pm on Saturday 22 February to hear us play some movie tunes, followed by an outdoor screening of The Greatest Showman. Bring your family, your friends and a picnic.
21.01.2022 Yesterday saw us commemorate Anzac Day in a way we haven't before. Many of our players played the Last Post from their driveways and our principal cornet player, Jamie Lawson, was featured on the TV news. Perhaps most special is seeing the number of young people get involved in the day. At the beginning of the year we lent a number of instruments to Richmond West Primary School for their brass band program. We're thrilled to see soprano cornet player Audrey featured on the front page of the Sunday Herald Sun today putting her instrument to such good use. Great job, Audrey, and we're looking forward to performing with you and all of your mates in the band once we can.
21.01.2022 Let us entertain you while we're in isolation. Here we present Robbie Williams' Let Me Entertain You, arranged by Andrew Batterham and featuring Steve Semmler-Farr on keyboard and drum kit. Thank you to our very own Gerard Banner and Stuart Gunn for their many hours of work pulling this together.... A YouTube link is in the comments if you'd like to share this with friends or family not on Facebook.
19.01.2022 We are all devastated that this year's #AustralianNationalBandChamps #Perth2020 has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic! And half way through a great rehearsal was a bitter pill to swallow. We feel for our banding brothers and sisters and the organising committee for having to make an impossible decision. Oh well, what to do? Off to the pub named after our band! #WeAreGlenferrie James Sileni Kathryn Smyth Marianna Barker Phillipa Edwards Jamie Lawson Caitlin Taylor Katie Thomas Frances Graham Graham Balderstone Chris Jewell Rachael Shineton Daniel McIlvride Gerald Appleton Matthew Savage
19.01.2022 Mark the calendar and set the alarm clock! The draw is out for the Cory Online Brass Band Championships and we have drawn band number one in the Championship section. This means we'll be performing at 2am AEST on Sunday 27 September (sorry to all our local supporters!!) - the good news though is the whole thing will stay up on YouTube so you can tune in at whatever more friendly time of day you rise from bed. The first sections will stream this weekend so to whet your appetit...e, follow the link in Cory's post here. There's an amazing lineup of international bands, all with something different to offer and different styles of videos depending what level of restrictions were in place in their location when they recorded. Needless to say ours are 'full distance' style! The Cory Band have already put in a huge amount of work to organise this competition, and we're very grateful for their support.
19.01.2022 We'd like to wish all the mothers out there a happy day today (and everyday!). We're grateful for the mothers in our band, the mothers of those in our band, and all those who have been 'band mum' to us over many years. We'd like to share with you a recording from one of our mothers. Marianna grew up in banding and gave the same to her three children, so we think that makes her a band mum a few times over. Here she plays 'Demelza' on the tenor horn. No professional microphone, no editing, just a mum at home doing one of the things she does best. Please enjoy, and we'll keep the music coming.
18.01.2022 Anzac Day would usually see us out and about helping the community commemorate the occasion. This year, from our homes, we are helping you commemorate in your homes. "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning ... We will remember them." Lest we forget. If you would like to share this video with family and friends not on Facebook, a YouTube link is in the comments.
18.01.2022 We'd like to share this performance of The Prayer with you. It features father and son Wayne Bowden (euphonium) and Dave Bowden (cornet) and is from last year's cabaret concert. Seeing and hearing the audience is a little surreal at the moment, but it's nice to be able to look back and appreciate moments we've had and look forward to creating more when we can. Thanks to Wayne Bowden for the video.... https://youtu.be/6xj0enG3MsU
18.01.2022 We're taking part in a broadcast for Interchange tomorrow. Tune into their Facebook page from 2pm for a free session on purpose, strategy and values, with a very special appearance and performance at the end. Kudos and thank you to Interchange for supporting music in our community when we are not able to perform 'in person'. https://www.facebook.com/interchangecompany/
14.01.2022 The sun is shining - couldn't be a better day to listen to a band play in the park! We'll be in Riversdale Park in Camberwell at 6pm tonight, followed by a free screening of The Greatest Showman. Bring your picnic blanket and dinner. https://www.boroondara.vic.gov.au//cinema-park-riversdale-
14.01.2022 We're going to have a quartet performing at Christmas Magic on Glenferrie this Friday - come along for a listen, a look at the Town Hall Gallery, and a shop/eat along Glenferrie Road. You can find us at the times below in the square on the corner of Glenferrie Road & Burwood Road, Hawthorn. 5.30pm - 6.10pm... 6.30pm - 7.10pm 7.30pm - 8.10pm If you're one of the first there, you might even snag yourself a goody bag! With thanks to the City of Boroondara and Hawthorn Arts Centre for their organisation and inviting us along to play.
13.01.2022 Today we received news of another three years of funding from our council, the City of Boroondara. We're very grateful for their ongoing support of us and other community groups and we're looking forward to getting back out in the local community when we can to repay some of that support. Without this funding our financial survival would have been in jeopardy as we have been unable to perform in public during this period of restrictions. We know not every band has the strong ...council and community support that we do and this makes us even more thankful for what exists in Boroondara. When it is safe to do so, get out and buy a concert ticket to support your local band. If that's us, fantastic - but whatever band it is, know that you're helping them continue to provide you with music into the future, as the City of Boroondara is doing for their residents.
13.01.2022 We have been fortunate to be able to get some small groups out playing carols over the last two weeks, culminating in a lovely evening for the residents of Kellett Grove last night. If though you miss the carols by candlelight style events that have had to be cancelled this year - don't worry! Here's something the City of Boroondara has prepared for you to enjoy from the comfort of home. You may recognise some familiar faces including Silvie Paladino and Bob Sedergreen, Austr...alian Jazz Legend, and hopefully will be thrilled to hear the sound of a brass band - because that's us! The concert can be streamed through bit.ly/3r3U6zl from now until Monday. We hope you enjoy it! We'd like to thank and acknowledge the immense efforts of Gerard Banner and Stuart Gunn who have worked so hard on our recordings this year, including those in this concert. We'd also like to thank the City of Boroondara for inviting us to be a part of this concert and putting it together for the community to share in Christmas at home. We hope next Christmas sees a return to 'normal programming' but meanwhile are grateful for this opportunity to share our music.
10.01.2022 Great atmosphere at Christmas Magic on Glenferrie and even greater dancing from the kids! We've got one more set from 7.30pm.
09.01.2022 We're back! First playout last night since March. Some might say it sounded like it but everyone in the park was happy to request a carol and enjoy the music. Now that we're warmed up, catch our quartet from 5.30pm tonight on the corner of Glenferrie Rd & Burwood Rd, Hawthorn (next to the town hall).
08.01.2022 The weather is forecast to be nice and clear on Saturday. To celebrate, come down to Cinema in the Park - we're playing at 6pm, followed by a screening of The Greatest Showman. This Saturday, 6pm at Riversdale Park, Camberwell (661 Riversdale Road)
07.01.2022 280 videos combined into one huge online brass band for this performance of Queen's Fat Bottomed Girls. Well done to Brassfestuk for all the coordination involved, not to mention the combining and editing. Can you spot anyone from Glenferrie?
07.01.2022 We're very excited to be participating in this international online competition run by The Cory Band. Stay tuned for details of how to listen in September, there's some fantastic bands taking part.
05.01.2022 The nationals have been cancelled and we're not sure when we'll be able to get out and about performing, but that doesn't mean we can't keep bringing music to you. Each rehearsal we'll be learning then recording a piece of music, and sharing it with you on this page. It won't be perfect and we could be missing a few parts, but we won't let that stop us! If there's anything you'd like to request please comment here (nothing too tricky please, we only have one rehearsal for eac...h piece and we're not The Cory Band!). Perhaps you have an old favourite you haven't heard in years, a special march or hymn, or a concert item that will have you forgetting for a moment the crazy times we find ourselves in. The first video will be posted after our rehearsal on Thursday.
04.01.2022 We had a great time playing to a large crowd at Cinema in the Park last night, followed by perfect weather to sit back and watch the movie. Thanks to the City of Boroondara and Boroondara Arts (Hawthorn Arts Centre) for organising a great event.
03.01.2022 We're really pleased with our 10th placing in The Cory Band's Online Brass Band Championships. We were competing against some of the best bands in the world and held our own. Congratulations to all of the bands who took part and embraced this new way to perform, and especially to Fountain City Brass Band from the USA on their first place. We'd like to extend a huge thank you to The Cory Band for producing such an excellent, positive event, and to all the event sponsors for m...aking it possible. Inside our own band, we'd like to acknowledge the efforts of Gerard Banner and Stuart Gunn for their many, many hours of audio and video production, and Phillipa Edwards for her musical direction (and whistling?). If you missed the event, you can catch up on the Championship Section here. We were the first band and start playing just after 20 minutes in. Don't stop there though, there's some thoroughly entertaining performances from the other bands - and when you get through this video, you can choose another section's replay to catch up on - brass band viewing for days! youtu.be/zrudkpDZnG0
02.01.2022 If you're missing live music, head to www.brassbanned.com for past Nationals performances this weekend. We're about to feature with our performance of Handel in the Band from last year.
01.01.2022 Merry Christmas from all of us at Glenferrie Brass! If you missed the City of Boroondara's online Christmas concert, here's our opener from it - Christmas Fanfare. We hope you enjoy your day.... Thank you for all your support in 2020 and we look forward to seeing you in 2021.
01.01.2022 Here is our take on The Queen of the Night's Aria by Mozart. It may not look or sound quite like what you've heard before, but it's definitely Mozart - he appears several times over in this video! We recorded this as our final piece for The Cory Band's online competition. To watch our full program and see all the other bands, you have a choice - you can watch live at 2am tonight, or wait until you wake up tomorrow and watch it back on replay. Tough choice, but if you watch live be sure to pop a 'Go Australia/Glenferrie' in the live comments! All the action will be streamed on Cory's YouTube channel (link in the comments). If you'd like to share this video with friends or family not on Facebook, a YouTube link is in the comments.
