24.01.2022 What do convicts, bees and Austins Ferry have in common? James Austins Cottage!!! A convict, caught stealing bee hives, James Austin built the oldest unmodified cottage in Tasmania back in 1815. Among other buildings constructed by Austin, he also operated the ferry running from Old Beach to, you guessed it, Austins Ferry. ... With no selfies around in the 1800s there are no known portraits of him around so a winning art impression by a local school student sits above the fireplace (pictured). Every Sunday you can visit the cottage and learn about James Austin and his antics from the volunteer caretakers Kaye and Louise, who also sell local honey products as a nod to Austins original crimes. Head to 12 Austins Ferry Road between 2pm and 4pm and look around the heritage building and its gardens. Group visits are available by appointment. For more information head to their Facebook page James Austins Cottage. James Austins Cottage is a Council owned property leased and run by its dedicated caretakers.

23.01.2022 Waste-Ed Wednesday International Compost Awareness Week (2nd - 8th May 2021) International Composting Awareness Week Australia is a week of activities highlighting the importance of compost and the multitude of benefits from our everyday organic waste. In Glenorchy it’s simple and easy for you to contribute to composting by using your FOGO (Food Organics Garden Organics) wheelie bin for all your food scraps, and garden waste. Tonnes of organic waste is diverted... away from landfill (where it creates harmful gas emissions) and is turned into rich compost for use by our Tassie farmers. You FOGO, Glenorchy! 22.01.2022 Even in Spring, Council will receive reports of smoky chimneys and air pollution nuisances from wood burning heaters in homes. As part of the EPAs Burn Brighter program, here are our top tips and a handy video to keep your neighbours happy and save you sending your money up in smoke! 1. Only burn dry seasoned wood... 2.Burn your fire hot. This prevents excessive smoke emissions and burns the smoke as a fuel instead. 3.Never burn rubbish in your wood fire For more information please head to https://epa.tas.gov.au///burn-brighter-this-winter-program https://youtu.be/UnttQvb-Skg

18.01.2022 Did you start a reno during COVID lockdown? Or got one planned for the upcoming holidays? Aussies love a bit of DIY, but did you know we also have one of the world’s highest death rates due to asbestos exposure**? Asbestos is still commonly found in bathrooms, laundries and kitchens, behind tiles and even under flooring, and there’s no safe level of exposure to asbestos fibres*.... Research shows that 1 in 5 DIYers have come across asbestos, but only half got professional help to deal with it. Just like plumbing and electrical work, asbestos removal (or jobs around the home that might uncover asbestos) are jobs for experts wearing the right type of protective gear. So for your safety and for those around you, do the asbestos checklist before you get stuck in! http://asbestosawareness.com.au/fact-sheets/ https://vimeo.com/147058660 *The World Health Organisation **asbestosawareness.com.au #AsbestosAwarenessMonth #DontRiskIt

08.01.2022 Waste-Ed Wednesday: Polystyrene (Styrofoam) None of the soft polystyrene packaging used with supermarket or takeaway foods can be recycled, nor can the hard white moulded packaging or soft peanuts. Being so soft, polystyrene gets crushed in recycling trucks and ends up contaminating other recyclables such as paper or glass. Remember, no polystyrene in the recycling wheelie bin! Top tips for polystyrene: ... Avoid completely if possible, polystyrene is a big litter and storm-water problem around the world, plus it lasts for 1000s of years buried in landfill, where it can break down into micro-plastic. Use your own containers or choose brands with more sustainable packaging. Check with shop staff and ask them what options you have, you may be able to leave polystyrene packaging with them to re-use or recycle. If you do end up with polystyrene at home, check the internet for good tips on how to re-purpose and re-use. polystyrene-recycling.org

04.01.2022 Waste-Ed Wednesday: Soft Plastics Ban the bag! Plastic bags cause havoc at the Derwent Park recycling facility and also contaminates FOGO organic waste which goes back to Tassie farmers as compost. Keep plastic bags out of your recycling, leaving items loose. For FOGO, line your caddy with newspaper or kitchen towel, or if you prefer a bag, only use 100% compostable bags (choose the green ones with compostable on the label, available at all major supermarkets).... Top Tip - keep a shopping bag near your bin for soft plastic packaging - and grab it next time you go grocery shopping! Soft plastic recycling bins are located just inside the front door of all major supermarkets. Not sure if its recyclable? Visit the Redcycle website for a (very!) long list of recyclable soft plastic items. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T12UC-tsXt4
