25.01.2022 Outstanding gliding day at Tunbridge airfield. View from under the tow plane wing which doubles as a nice awning on warm sunny days.

25.01.2022 The Annual General Meeting of The Soaring Club of Tasmania (Gliding Tasmania) will occur at 10:00am on Sunday November 22. All committee positions are vacant.

25.01.2022 One of our Glider / Tug Pilots, Steve, flies an ex RAAF Winjeel in his spare time. Here is some footage from a recent flight: https://youtu.be/hbO-Pie6eK4

24.01.2022 A recent flight over Lakes Crescent and Sorrell in the Tasmanian Central Highlands from our field at Tunbridge Tasmania. Crisp, clear days with excellent flying conditions often occur throughout the year in Tasmania with winter providing some standout flying days. https://youtu.be/eBaCypJfUac

23.01.2022 Good news! We are taking advantage of the good weather and available crew to run a two day double header this weekend. On Saturday we have John in the Instructors seat and Steve pressing the Pawnee pedals. On Sunday Richard is Instructing and Phil will be in the Tug.

22.01.2022 The pointy end of the Gliding season has arrived. Here are some tips to manage hydration issues on the field and in the air: 1. Dont take off already dehydrated. Ground preparation in summer is sweaty business! 2. On longer flights (more than 1 hour) aim to replace what you lose. 3. At the end of a long flight: ... (a) Body weight loss should be less than 2% (b) Urine colour should be pale (c) Urine volume should exceed 0.5 ml per kilo per hour. Example: An 85 kilogram pilot should be producing more than 42.5 ml of urine per hour. (d) For long cross country flights or endurance flights there are products available to deal with the above issue. A pharmacist will help with choosing something suitable. (e) Sports drinks containing electrolyte can be advantageous. (f) Take care to avoid consuming excessive water. This can sit in the gut causing bloating, headache and dizziness. - From an article by Dr. Ken Wishaw published in Australian Sport Pilot December 2018. (Dr. Wishaw is an Instructor at Kingaroy Gliding Club). See more

21.01.2022 After two and a half years of serious commitment by a dedicated team of members and friends, today we got the official sign off for final inspection and certificate of occupancy for our new facilities at Tunbridge airfield. Well done to all participants!

How about a Trial Instructional Flight in our Twin Astir glider? A half hour flight with an Instructor is available for $195. The lucky recipient of your gift will be given the opportunity to operate the aircraft controls while enjoying the spectacular view of the Tasmanian midlands from the gliders front seat. 17.01.2022 Glider pilots learn to harness the natural lift or ascending air currents in the sky (typically thermal, ridge and wave). It is not unusual to ascend to quite considerable heights and to use that height to travel great distances. In mainland Australia cross country gliding flights between 500km and 1,000km are not uncommon during the summer soaring season. There are however lifting forces in the sky that are to be avoided at all costs. The real bad guys among these are th...e cumulonimbus clouds. These are usually very tall white fluffy clouds with an anvil shaped head. Cumulonimbus clouds are either a precursor to a thunderstorm or part of an active thunderstorm. They might look harmless before the storm but their white fluffiness can be immensely destructive. Cu Nims can grow to more than 30,000 feet in height and are characterised by extreme updrafts within and extreme downdrafts around the periphery. No sensible glider pilot would choose to venture near one of these things. The attached article describes the story of a US airforce pilot who, in 1959, ejected from his jet after an engine failure, only to spend 40 minutes being given the washing machine treatment by a cumulonimbus cloud. https://sierrahotel.net/blogs//the-man-who-rode-the-thunder

15.01.2022 Soaring Club of Tasmania Re: Covid 19 Corona Virus Effective 28/3/2020 In compliance with Government directives we are unfortunately closing our gliding operations to the public at this time and until further notice. We will not be taking any future bookings until we re commence flying ... If you have already booked a flight we are happy to hold this over until we re-open or offer you a refund. In the mean time please stay safe SCOT Committee See more

15.01.2022 There was a tentative plan to run flying operations tomorrow (Monday). A crew shortage however means that this will not occur. It will be normal operations next Sunday (March 15).

14.01.2022 We are having such a good day at Gliding Tasmania today that we are coming back tomorrow. Rich and Phil will be on site and camping tomorrow night. The more the merrier!

10.01.2022 Thermals are often felt but rarely seen. We get some guidance to their potential location from the presence of cumulus clouds. Dark ground surfaces such as a freshly ploughed field are often an indicator of a likely thermal, especially during a summer afternoon when the ground has received heat from the sun and reflected some of that heat back into the air. This video gives a relatively rare glimpse at what a thermal would look like if we could see it. https://www.facebook.com/661069172/posts/10158865988769173/?

10.01.2022 Flying tomorrow (Sunday August 30) is cancelled due to high forecast winds.

08.01.2022 Modern high performance gliders have a glide ratio of up to 70:1. For the uninitiated, this aircraft will travel 70 kilometres for every 1,000 metres (3,300 feet) height lost (assuming no thermals etc. are found). Our Twin Astir has a glide ratio of about 38:1. The F-16 fighter has a glide ratio (power off) of 6:1, ie. not much better than a brick! Check out this video: https://www.facebook.com/236073444034/posts/10158108903984035/

08.01.2022 No flying this long weekend due to crew being interstate. So enjoy your long weekend away wherever you may be.

07.01.2022 Our Instructors are now sitting in the back seat again. Social distancing made things difficult for a couple of months. We can have up to 20 people on site and two seat operations have returned. Contact Richard Doyle on 0418992264 to help manage numbers and to confirm availability. We fly most Sundays (subject to weather) and some other days by arrangement. Picture credit: British Gliding Association.

07.01.2022 Sunday is looking like a quite good Gliding day at Tunbridge Airfield. Temperature in the mid twenties and light winds. Richard and Phil will be alternating in the Tug and Instructors seat. We should have other crew members to add to the mix. Trial Instructional Flights available.

07.01.2022 The annual Summer Camp at Gliding Tasmania kicks off this Saturday (January 09) rolling through to Sunday 17th. Long range forecast looks good. Camping facilities are available on site. Three two seaters (Astir, Grob and Falke) are available for Trial Instructional Flights and Training. The Twin Astir and Club Libelle are available for solo operations.

06.01.2022 Gliding is ON tomorrow. (Tuesday). Full crew available for Trial Instructional Flights, Instructional Flights and Solo Flying. Conditions look GOOD.

05.01.2022 We are back! Flying operations will be running throughout this long weekend and ongoing. Normal Covid 19 requirements to apply with a maximum of 20 people on site, masks worn in Glider cockpit for dual flights, sanitising etc. Crew available this Saturday and Sunday with a possibility of flying Monday. Contact must be made with Richard Doyle (0419 992 264) prior to attending so that we can manage numbers on site. This requirement will continue for the foreseeable future and applies to members and visitors. Graham, Phil and Steve will crew on Saturday with Richard and John running the operation on Sunday. Monday crew TBA.

05.01.2022 We have crews both days this weekend. Forecast for Sunday has improved with light showers going through by 09:00. Rest of the day looks good. Saturday looks like very good gliding conditions.

04.01.2022 Looks like we are not the only aviation outfit with planes in storage. Updates will be provided as soon as we can offer Trial Instructional flights and member training flights. We are able to run solo flights for qualified members for the purpose of maintaining aircraft serviceability and Instructor currency. https://www.facebook.com/1363227402/posts/10223949315065075/

04.01.2022 Some good news. 1. Gliding Australia (formerly known as the Gliding Federation of Australia) has extended the Junior membership to all members under 25 years of age. Previously junior membership only applied to under 18s and full time students. This represents a significant cost saving. (See GA website for details) 2. GA have, in response to Covid 19 lockdown impact on Gliding operations, extended Membership subscriptions for an additional 6 months. Onya Gliding Australi...a! 3. Gliding Tasmania will be making an announcement in the very near future about returning to normal training operations. The new normal will, of course, include the usual Covid 19 safety measures.

03.01.2022 The planes have their pyjamas on ready for hibernation. Hopefully not a long one.

02.01.2022 This weekend we have crews for both Saturday and Sunday. Weather is cool and fine. Please phone or text Richard Doyle on 0419992264 to confirm planned attendance. Normal social distancing and sanitising rules apply.
