24.01.2022 We see the effects of this political demonizing of welfare recipients every day at the Global Village. Of course it is intentional, it is cruel, and it is wrong. Politicians and mainstream corporate media "emperors" get away with extravagant rorts and tax dodges, while hypocritically portraying welfare recipients as guilty for daring to survive on crumbs. Gradually, more and more people are coming to realise how distressing it can be to access much-needed assistance - incl...uding farmers, despite the enormous goodwill and support they have from the community and the media. As the article says, "What did you think would happen when you treated everyone on welfare like a criminal? The result is that people who desperately need help are not given it, lest it accidentally go to an undeserving bludger. I feel so hopeless when I read in the news the constant new ways my life will be monitored and controlled." And pre-judged. See more

24.01.2022 Could you survive on less than $15K a year? Newstart is $278 a week and has not been raised in real terms in 25 years. Over that time, housing, energy, and other living costs have dramatically increased. Over 900,000 people in Australia are locked out of paid work, studying, or caring for children, and live on Newstart or another Allowance. Many struggle daily to afford basic essentials like a roof over their head and food on their table.... People living on Newstart have to make tough choices between eating a meal and paying a bill, buying shoes for their children, and maintaining their health. It is nearly impossible to look for paid work if you are homeless and hungry. There is a chorus of voices calling for Newstart to be lifted: community organisations, trade unions, local Councils, big and small business, and 2/3 of Australians support raising Newstart, according to an Essential Research poll. Come along to the Global Village Community Co-op on Friday 1st March, and learn about the Raise The Rate campaign and how you can get involved. Light refreshments will be provided. Hosted by ACOSS (Australian Council of Social Service). For more info: [email protected] or 0444 590 297.

23.01.2022 Our beloved volunteers and friends will be taking a well-earned rest and spending time with families over the holiday period from Monday 24th Dec. We re-open on Monday 7th Jan. Happy festive season to you all.

22.01.2022 The Heartless, Cashless "welfare" card is forcing people to shop at the big supermarket chains with dearer, imported fruit and veg. The Global Village is not aligned with any political party or policy platform, but we always strive to stand in solidarity with those doing it tough - whether they be workers, students, pensioners, carers, unemployed, or whatever. We believe it is important to draw attention to widespread concerns about the Cashless Debit Card. Apart from the... massive additional costs of running the program (a nice earner for wealthy investors who coincidentally donate generously to conservative "Liberal" and "Independent" politicians), and the stigma attached to using the card, it also makes many important purchases more difficult and prevents people from buying at smaller, cheaper, local fresh food outlets. Unfortunately, this looks like being one of those crucial but "overlooked" issues at the next Federal election, with people distracted by blatant scare campaigns about immigration levels and changes to taxation loopholes. Conservative "Independents" generally share the same views and policies as the current LNP government when it comes to demonizing, scape-goating and punishing welfare recipients, while helping the wealthy to help themselves to an ever-increasing slice of the pie. 20.01.2022 The Global Village in Lavington has been gathering support for an increase to the Newstart Allowance for some time now. There is still time to sign our petition that will be presented to the Albury Council. We will be asking them to join local councils in South Australia and Victoria in calling on the Federal Government to increase Newstart. If you havent signed the petition, please drop in - we also have a new "grassroots" Health & Wellbeing Project that wed love to chat with you about. You might remember the recent social media "#RaisetheRate" campaign. The attached article presents an interesting discussion about a more grassroots approach to pushing for positive changes.

19.01.2022 One of our awesome volunteers is looking for a free microwave. If you know of one floating around, it would be great to help her out before the holidays. Cheers.

18.01.2022 PLEASE NOTE the change of date - our monthly market stall is on Sunday 29 July, (last Sunday of the month), not the 22nd as initially advised.

14.01.2022 Can you spare 4 hours a month (or more) to help out at The Global Village this year? As some of our much loved friends move on to the next chapters of their liv...es, were scouring the Border for some big-hearted folks to come on board. No experience necessary. Kind and respectful humanitarians who also love animals and our planet are ideally suited. Message us or drop in for a chat if youre interested. See more

13.01.2022 The number of people coming to the Global Village with stories of being unable to afford basic medical costs is increasing. One gent on Newstart is suffering from a tooth abscess while on a 6 month waiting list for treatment. Another retired gent cant afford the multiple medications hes been prescribed. A women with skin cancer is avoiding treatment because she cant afford it. This is a criminal situation in a country as wealthy as Australia. Health is a human right, but it is rapidly becoming a luxury for many of us. Join or help the Global Village to speak out on these and other social injustices.

12.01.2022 The ACOSS "Raise the Rate" forum held at the Global Village on March 1st drew a great crowd on a hot afternoon. Thanks to all who attended. We hope to organise a follow-up meeting in the next couple of weeks.

12.01.2022 Keeping the lawns mowed can be a real challenge on a low income. Mowers and mowing services are costly. If you happen to have a mower or other tools you dont need, wed love to add it to our tool library. Its a practical way to keep costs down for those on a tight budget, especially before rental inspections.

10.01.2022 Scott Morrison has raised the NewStart payment by just $2. Yes, $2. We need to change the rules so that NewStart provides people with the opportunity to get back on their feet and find work, rather than punishing them and driving them deeper into poverty. Michele ONeil - ACTU

09.01.2022 Our fridge is fried! Can you help? We used it to store frozen bread and cold store foods and drinks to distribute to those in need. If you know of one that could be donated that would be awesome. Preferably energy efficient to keep our power costs manageable.

07.01.2022 Great turnout for the Raise the Rate forum at Global Village Community Co-op in North Albury yesterday. Thanks to ACOSS (CEO Dr. Cassandra Goldie and National Campaign Coordinator Pas Forgione) for holding the event at our little Freestore/Community Action Centre. Thanks also to everyone else who helped make the forum work - our volunteers who helped prepare for the day, the people who shared their experiences, and/or expressed their support for an increase to the Newstart payment, and to local media for covering the story.

06.01.2022 Come along to share ideas for action on this important campaign that seeks to re-establish a fairer balance between big business and the rest of us. For too long, the rules have been skewed more and more in favour of big corporations. A third of them dont even pay any tax! This dramatically affects the level of support and services available to people who are in need. Employment rules have also changed to make work less secure, and wages have stagnated. The Albury "Change ...the Rules" group meets at the Global Village every second Wednesday (next one is tomorrow night, 19 Sept) at 5:30pm. We also run a monthly market stall at the Sunday Kiewa St (Rotary) Market, to spread the word about the campaign and raise some funds for the Global Village. The next market day will be on Sunday, 30 September. Wed love to see more people getting involved! See more

03.01.2022 Got any unwanted recyclable bottles/cans? The Global Village is accepting donations of these as part of our fundraising efforts. All proceeds go directly to helping local families in need. Pick-up can be arranged.

02.01.2022 Looks like the federal government has finally started to impose some penalties on the banks for the disgraceful practices uncovered by the Banking Royal Commission... No, wait -- oh, no, sorry... instead, theyre making a serious cut to the funding of FOOD BANK - which helps the Global Village and hundreds of other outlets to provide food for struggling Australians. The relevant minister has already faced a barrage of criticism and an online petition which collected over 10,000 signatures in 7 hours - so now, hes announced that he will ask for a "review" of the decision.

02.01.2022 Our crocheting and knitting army turn unwanted wool into blankets for those in need. If youve got any unwanted yarn cluttering up your place, please consider donating it to the Global Village and better still joining the team. 8 ply is ideal. Size 4.00 crochet hooks also appreciated. Free lessons available. Much gratitude to Louise for the finishing touches.

01.01.2022 A huge thanks to Thurgoona Bakery for the bread trays. Such generosity makes a real difference in the lives of many people who rarely experience human kindness. Share the love next time your in Thurgoona. Their salads are the best. And our deepest gratitude to Jason for making it happen. If you know any businesses that have unwanted items, consider suggesting they donate it to the Global Village
