07.01.2022 People of Glossop - Alex and Bill Wilksch In the heart of Glossop at number 19 Mackay Road is the large shed and workshop of Wilksch’s Agricultural Engineering. This business began life in the backyard of Alex Wilksch’s fruit block on Lower Winkie Road in Winkie until he erected new premises on the Glossop to Barmera Road (Sturt Highway) in 1930. The wood and iron blacksmith shop stood on what is today, the corner of the Glossop High School bus park. Horses were still largely... used on the fruit blocks in those years and there was always a demand for a blacksmith with repair of block implements such as plough shares which needed sharpening or new points welded to their tips and of course forging and maintenance of horseshoes. Alex operated his busy blacksmithing business here until the 1970’s, when the school needed extra grounds and his lease could no longer be renewed. The old workshop was demolished and in 1974 Alex and son Bill built new premises on Mackay Road. From here they continued to operate the business of manufacture and repair of fruit block implements. In 1934 Alex had married Gladys Morey in Berri and they raised a family of four children. Their only son Bill was apprenticed to his father once he finished High School and father and son worked the business together until 1974 when Alex retired. Bill married Denise in 1973 and they raised two children and now one granddaughter born. They continue to live in their hometown of Glossop. Bill today continues to operate the business, fixing the modern agricultural machinery used by today’s blockers. He has manufactured apricot cutting machinery and has also made over 230 hydraulic undervine weeders. In a corner of the current workshop, there is still the blacksmith forge and various tools used in the early days by Alex, preserving a little piece of Wilksch and Glossop history. See more
