20.01.2022 Zoom Worm Control Training I have just set up some worm control training meetings for Australian goat owners in various categories: - milking goats (1.30pm Sat 12 th Sept Brisbane time or GMT +10) - miniature goats (1.30pm Sun 13th Sept) - novice pet wether owners (1.30pm Sat 19 Sept) ... - meat goats. (1.30pm Sunday 20 Sept) I will be limiting participants to 5 people each so that people can ask lots of questions. Participants can then (if they wish) do a 2 page written exam & send in a video of using a dummy FAMACHA card so they can get accredited and then buy a FAMACHA card from the ANZCVS I have done the on-line Zoom training videos and had some practice sessions and teach student vet nurses each week but must admit I feel a bit nervous about the technology and internet speeds. Email me ([email protected]) if you want to take part. There is a small charge which will help offset my time, the Zoom pro costs & for up-grading my internet speed. Therefore I will only schedule 2 before doing more. I am interested in peoples thoughts re the best times (I am trying to avoid school hours and peak Netflix times). See more

19.01.2022 Changes to Queensland laws regarding veterinary medicines and chemicals. If you use dog baits, then you will need to get trained and have a certificate to prove competency. Also now of any lab in Qld detects a veterinary medicines above the Maximum Residue Limit or a chemical (lead, arsenic etc) above maximum levels then these must be reported to Biosecurity Qld. This would apply to diary factory labs processing goat milk.

Also research in Switzerland found the use of epimectrin pour-ons resulted only a 40% reduction in worm egg counts after use indicating resistance on all 43 farms tested. See Murri, S., et al. (2014). "Frequency of eprinomectin resistance in gastrointestinal nematodes of goats in canton Berne, Switzerland." Vet Parasitol 203(1): 114-119.

07.01.2022 More Bioworma results I publish all including the high worm egg counts. Just did a herd of 3 = 800, 2150, 2450 epg. All in excellent condition and sleek coats but disappointed with epg levels. However the first has never had a worm drench (just 2 copper oxide wire boluses ) and is now almost 2, The other milking does were last drenched on 25/8/19 and 1/12/19 . So not too bad.

02.01.2022 Freemartins in goats I was disbudding some goat kids and checking them as per normal and found a doe kid with a large clitoris. Pretty sure it is a freemartin as born with 2 brothers. It will be a while until I can examine with a vaginal speculum due to her small size (2.6kg). Freemartins are common in twin calves but rare in goats. It was a first kidder Nigerian Dwarf doe so not a lot of room for 3 kids.
