25.01.2022 "The most heartbreaking, emotional call I've ever taken..." Opponents of voluntary assisted dying like to talk about hypothetical "unintended consequences" of passing VAD laws. But not passing these laws has its own unintended consequences for dying people - and they are not hypothetical ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFEjgSscruU

25.01.2022 "The Vatican is complicit in the violence done to terminally ill persons forced to choose 'between a condition of intolerable suffering and the risk of clandestine euthanasia'." A sobering read for all those who still insist that religion is irrelevant to views on end of life choices https://www.nytimes.com//pope-francis-euthanasia-assisted-

24.01.2022 The family of an elderly woman who chose a voluntary assisted death in Victoria responds to a "baseless and hurtful" article published by VAD opponents "Our Mum was deeply loved, well cared for and we miss her dearly."

22.01.2022 Hobart Catholic Archbishop Julian Porteous has misrepresented voluntary assisted dying (VAD) in a recent article in the Hobart Mercury. Dying For Choice's Neil Francis looks at the facts NOTE: While The Mercury published Archbishop Porteous' original arguments, they declined to publish this rebuttal. https://www.dyingforchoice.com//archbishop-porteous-egregi

20.01.2022 Ireland is set to be the next country to debate a voluntary assisted dying bill. "Justice delayed is justice denied for people who are terminally ill."

19.01.2022 A historic day: the End-of-Life Choice (Voluntary Assisted Bill) 2020 has passed the Upper House in Tasmania! It now moves to the Lower House where it will be debated over coming weeks. No bill in Tasmania has EVER made it this far. Great work by the Hon Mike Gaffney MLC, as well as Your Choice TAS and Dying with Dignity Tasmania. It's not over yet: NOW is the time to contact your Lower House MP, if you're in Tasmania. Use our handy MP Look-up tool https://www.gogentleaustralia.org.au/mp_lookup

18.01.2022 WEEKEND LONG READ (10 mins) : My Mother’s Brave Choice of Medical Aid in Dying "My mom practically hopped out of her bed when she heard the details and that she qualified; she was so excited. She told me right away after the doctor left, That’s what I’m going to dophysician-assisted dying. I don’t want to compete with this diseasethat’s not what I want to do with the rest of my life. 15.01.2022 Powerful stuff from the architect of Australia's first voluntary assisted dying law "The Queensland election has been a test. The message? Acceding to the demands of the church when these conflict with the wishes of the people is not good politics. Most of us - even the religious - want the option of voluntary assisted dying." https://www.theadvocate.com.au//tasmanians-deserve-the-ri/

15.01.2022 Does the push for the legalisation of medically assisted dying constitute a failure of palliative care? Not at all, writes Ann David. http://www.gisborneherald.co.nz//care-not-nullified-by-c/

15.01.2022 Well done Tassie. Let the debate begin...

13.01.2022 With only weeks to go before advance voting begins for the New Zealand election, a very expensive campaign is running across mainstream and social media and on billboards along roadsides to persuade voters to say no in the assisted dying referendum. But who is behind it? https://www.gogentleaustralia.org.au/religious_rights_campa

11.01.2022 A fantastic dissection of the tactics of fear, uncertainty and doubt deployed against voluntary assisted dying Whether it is proposed laws in New Zealand and Tasmania, or attacks on Victoria's existing scheme, there is no limit to the misinformation opponents are willing to spread. https://www.yesforcompassion.org.nz/beware-the-tactics-of-/

08.01.2022 Terminally ill New Zealander Stuart Armstrong says it’s a mistake to even frame the euthanasia debate as a two-sided argument. "It's called the End of Life CHOICE" for a reason. If you don't like it, don't use it. There’s no negatives. No one extra is going to die because of this bill; just a whole lot of people aren't going to suffer miserably doing it. https://www.vice.com//assisted-dying-euthanasia-referendum

08.01.2022 Today is the day! Debate on Tasmania's Voluntary Assisted Dying bill begins in the Upper House from 3pm (AEST). Watch the livestream here https://www.parliament.tas.gov.au/parliament/lctbs.htm

07.01.2022 Every day that the NSW Parliament does not pass Voluntary Assisted Dying laws, more people will suffer unnecessarily. Join Andrew Denton and the Dying with Dignity NSW team to help launch a new campaign for choice at the end of life.

07.01.2022 Former prime minister Helen Clark is encouraging people to vote yes in the upcoming End of Life Choice referendum, telling New Zealanders not to let "fear or misinformation get in the way of compassion"

06.01.2022 Diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, former New Zealand Deputy PM Sir Michael Cullen says he will vote YES in NZ's End of Life Choice referendum in October I do not want to lose control of my bodily functions so that my dignity has disappeared with the ebbing of my life. When I reach those last stages, if that is the prospect, I want the choice to be able to decide when the time is right to complete the circle of life. https://www.stuff.co.nz//terminally-ill-sir-michael-cullen

05.01.2022 Thank you Jacqui Lambie, Independent Senator for Tasmania, for this Letter to the Editor, which perfectly summarises the evidence to support Voluntary Assisted Dying, and so eloquently vocalises what the vast majority of Tasmanians and other Australians think and feel RESPECT AND SUPPORT "Australia has been talking about euthanasia laws for decades. We've come to know this issue by names like 'dying with dignity', 'assisted dying' and now Mike Gaffney's End-Of-Life Choic...es bill. For many Tasmanians of faith this is a challenging issue. I respect people of faith. I am one myself. Religious people worry that these laws could make older people feel like they are a burden. That greedy relatives would push their elders to leave before they are ready. I understand these concerns but the evidence from Victoria and Western Australia suggests that when these laws come in there isn't a rush to sign on. Most people still want to hang on to life for as long as they can. Mike Gaffney's bill draws from the Victorian and Western Australian legislation. These laws have strong, clear safeguards for both doctors and patients. In other words, a doctor can't just administer an injection, and that's the way it should be. Christianity requires us to honour the inherent dignity of life. To be consistent, that has to mean honouring the dignity of a life at its end. You cannot honour the preciousness of a person by compelling them to die on your terms instead of theirs. This is the fourth time a bill like this has been before the Tasmanian Parliament. I hope this time it succeeds." https://www.theadvocate.com.au//respecting-faith-supporti/ See more

04.01.2022 "There's just no getting around the fact that medicine cannot cure all disease and that palliative care cannot control all pain and suffering. "Medical-assistance-in-dying is really about two things: respect for a dying patient's wishes, and true compassion for suffering patients as they reach the end of their lives." https://www.nzherald.co.nz/northern-adv//news/article.cfm

04.01.2022 Listen to the nurses. They see the suffering first hand... The impact on nurses and carers at the bedside of the terminally ill is all too raw. We are the ones who hear their cries for an end to the suffering, powerless to act, heartbreaking as it is to witness." 03.01.2022 Sometimes we forget just how groundbreaking Australia has been in the fight for end-of-life choice and voluntary assisted dying. Thank you for all you do Judy. https://www.facebook.com//a.118270429826874/218186223168627

02.01.2022 It's not going to cause extra people to die these people are dying anyway. But the manner of their death will be so much more supportive, compassionate and kind. 01.01.2022 One of the dirtiest tricks in a political operative's bag "The push poll is a form of telemarketing propaganda and rumor mongering, masquerading as an opinion poll." Opponents to voluntary assisted dying are using this unscrupulous tactic to manipulate public opinion in New Zealand. It is now happening in Tasmania

01.01.2022 A reminder of what it's all about Next week the debate in Tasmania begins. Get behind the Your Choice TAS team and if you haven't yet, contact your MPs and let them know how desperately we need voluntary assisted dying laws. https://www.gogentleaustralia.org.au/mp_lookup

01.01.2022 124 terminally ill Victorians chose to end their lives in the 12 months since the state's landmark Voluntary Assisted Dying laws came into effect, an independent review has found. Our voluntary assisted dying laws are giving Victorians who are suffering an incurable illness at the end of their lives a compassionate choice," Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said. This review shows that the system is working as it should." ... https://www.theage.com.au//euthanasia-laws-used-by-124-ter

01.01.2022 One important hurdle overcome. A long way still to go. Tasmania, it's never been more important to contact your MPs and urge them to vote YES to the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill.
