24.01.2022 Communication is so much more than just words!

24.01.2022 No truer words have ever been said

24.01.2022 ATTENTION PARENTS Play provides the most natural and meaningful process by which children can construct knowledge and understandings, practice skills, immerse themselves naturally in a broad range of literacy and numeracy and engage in productive, intrinsically l motivating learning environments. (Walker, 2007. Play Matters). Get those toys out and enjoy some quality time with your kids! Itll be fun and informative all at once (win + win!). Happy playing

24.01.2022 I wake up everyday, knowing that I’ll make someone’s life a little better... I’ll help them communicate a little easier, socialise a little more, talk a little clearer! #grateful

23.01.2022 ATTENTION PARENTS Speech Therapy is only one piece of the puzzle ! What has the biggest impact is how you carry through with the goals we target during therapy, and the changes you make to your childs environment (language exposure) at home. Language opportunities happen through experiences throughout the day. Become your childs commentator. Always talk about what they are doing: open/shut, washing hands, big/small, hot/cold, all the nouns and verbs they encounter throughout the day (e.g. spoon, fork, socks, garage, rolling, cutting, mixing). Its through every day experiences and through your communication with them, that their vocabulary and sentence structures will begin to flourish !

23.01.2022 Thank you @speechlanguageleague for sharing !

21.01.2022 ATTENTION PARENTS: Did you know that by reading to your little one, youre boosting your childs brain development? It is the easiest way to increase school readiness. By reading, youre helping to build your childs vocabulary, language and literacy skills, whilst also improving their concentration and curiosity. What book will you be reading to your kids today? #happyreading

20.01.2022 One of Taneal’s favourites for working on: Asking questions Eliciting spontaneous conversation Reasoning skills First sounds identification ... What’s your favourite book at the moment and what do you use it for? I’m needing new books to add to my collection! See more

20.01.2022 My furry monster makes any artic goals FUN! Step 1: Get a tissue box Step 2: Glue a monster on the top Step 3: Feed the monster Could it be more simple ?

19.01.2022 Do you talk about food during mealtime with your kids? Mealtime is a wonderful opportunity to expand your childs vocabulary/language and also get them EXCITED about various foods. There are so many wonderful words you can use to help expand your childs vocabulary: Texture words: soft, smooth, crunchy, hard, etc Flavour words: sweet, sour Colour words Imagination words: ball, moon, dinosaur, car, lion ... Food Labels: grape, orange, banana, carrot, lemon etc... Thank you @kids.eat.in.color for this lovely visual ! See more

19.01.2022 Teaching your child more than 1 language DOES NOT cause a language delay. Research shows that monolingual and bilingual children reach major language milestones at similar times. Bilingual children might say their first words slightly later than monolinguals, but still within the normal range. Research suggests that by the age of about 5, bilingual children are at the same level as monolingual children in their strongest languages. RULE O...F THUMB: If your child is strong in their dominant language, but weak in their second language. Then that is NOT considered a language delay. If your child is struggling with using and understanding BOTH languages, then this a red flag for a language delay/disorder. Seek advice from a Speech Pathologist! It is recommended that you speak to your child in YOUR strongest language. This enables your child to develop a strong foundation for that language. If you attempt to speak to your child in a language that you arent strong or confident in, you may be teaching your child incorrect word and sentence structures, which can be difficult to unlearn. It is better than they learn one language well, even if this is not English to start with. DONT delay intervention if a child is struggling to learn both languages! See more

18.01.2022 Little Rascals !

18.01.2022 Who else loves @superduperpub? As a mobile therapist, I find their resources super useful and compact. In the above image, we were working on regular plurals. One attempt = collecting one token with the magnet stick! Great for those clients that need immediate reinforcement! Whats your favourite go-to therapy resources/tools

18.01.2022 Attention Parents In this day and age, with both parents working full-time, it may seem hard to find time to sit with your child and engage in meaningful language and learning - but it doesn’t have to be! Here are some quick tips for enriching your child’s literacy and language development, that you can incorporate into a busy schedule: On the way to childcare/preschool, have a nursery rhyme sing-a-long. Whilst in the car, play ‘eye-spy’, with a different sound focus each day. During dinner, talk about the food you are eating - its colour, texture, temperature... Try and read 1 book per night before bed. You don’t need to read it word-for-word. You could talk about the pictures or find the words that rhyme!

17.01.2022 Something I think we all struggle with (whether you’re a parent or therapist), is LETTING GO and allowing the child to attempt a skill, fail, ask for help, attempt again, fail again, ask for help and eventually SUCCEED! However this is SO vital for allowing a child to develop new skills and learn ways to problem solve. As hard as it may be, try and step back a little ... and watch your child flourish !

17.01.2022 ATTENTION PARENTS I really can’t stress enough the importance of reading to your children EVERY DAY! It is vital for language development, print awareness, pre-literacy skills, literacy skills ... and SO much more ! When reading to your child, here are some tips to implement right away: Follow the words with your finger (to build print awareness) Talk about what you see - use lots of verbs, nouns + adjectives If old enough, ask your child to recount what happened in the story. Ask your child to predict what will happen on the next page (to build their inferencing and prediction skills).

16.01.2022 Most were gifted the power of speech, without realising and understanding the magnitude of this tool. I love that my job allows me to assist others to create and develop this gift. The moment they realise its power is breathtaking and inspiring ! #ilovemyjob

16.01.2022 The simplest game/resource to have in your bag of goodies! We use this for sequencing (first, next, last), before and after, following instructions and prepositions.

15.01.2022 ATTENTION PARENTS Here are some communication milestones your child should usually achieve by the age of THREE... follow more complex two part instructions (e.g., give me the teddy and throw the ball) understand simple wh-questions, such as what, where and who understand the concepts of same and different sort items into groups when asked (e.g., toys vs food)... recognise some basic colours. say four to five words in a sentence use a variety of words for names, actions, locations and descriptions ask questions using what, where and who talk about something in the past, but may use -ed a lot (e.g.,he goed there) have a conversation, but may not take turns or stay on topic. #SpeechPathologyAustralia See more

13.01.2022 ATTENTION PARENTS Speech therapy tip of the week! Slowly stop the habit of asking closed yes/no questions. These sort of questions wont help your child develop their express language. Some changes you could make each day: what do you want for dinner? Instead of do you want ...? tell me 3 things you did at school today instead of how was school? How should mummy make the sandwich? Instead of do you want a sandwich?

12.01.2022 A simple game to increase repetition in speech sound practice! This one is particularly great for when you need increased repetition when working with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) The child picks a paddle pop stick and has to produce the target as many times as it says on the stick (numbered 5-10). Can be used for targets in isolation, at CV level, word level, etc...... This one is great for using in group therapy. The child with the most points/numbers at the end wins! The winner gets to go first when playing a game, followed by the other kids in the group. This is highly motivating for the kids! #Tanealsspeechtherapy See more

12.01.2022 How do you keep your clients motivated to do LOTS of trials, particularly for motor speech goals? It can be tiring (for them and us!). This barrel of monkeys game is a great way to get those repetitions. One production = One monkey. What games/strategies do you use to get as many repetitions as possible? Please share !

12.01.2022 ATTENTION PARENTS Swap those screens for outdoor play this summer! Kids have so much to learn playing outside, from social interactions to developing rich language skills. Lets bring back the good old days when playing in the dirt was the norm

09.01.2022 If you know, you know.

08.01.2022 Who else cant live without Mr. Potato Head? #FAVOURITE !! We love using using Mr and Mrs Potato Head to ensure generalisation of previously targeted pronouns - he, she, him, her, his, hers. This can be done by asking simple questions such as: Who has a blue hat? Who does this ball belong to? This little ball is ... (his/hers) #TanealsSpeechTherapy

07.01.2022 Whats your New Years resolution for 2020?

07.01.2022 For most of us, daily routines such as buying a train ticket, paying a bill, communicating on social media, reading the newspaper, reading street signs and cafe menus, go unnoticed. For 1 in 3 Australians, these tasks are not so easy ... Lets help change these statics by educating young Australians on the importance of literacy. Everyone deserves the right to reach their highest potential ! .

06.01.2022 Who else has clients that are happy to work for kinetic sand for an ENTIRE session?! I love the immediate reinforcement that kids get from finding articulation picture cards (or other targets) that are hidden in a bucket of kinetic sand. The above goal is targeting sight words. As a mobile therapist, I carry a small container of kinetic sand. Its great because it can be used as part of your therapy activity (as above), or as a reward! ... #tanealsspeechtherapy See more

04.01.2022 There are so many different approaches to teaching just about ANYTHING! If you trial an approach/style and it doesnt work... move on and try another. Every person learns new things in a different way and we need to be able to adapt in order to get the desired outcomes!

03.01.2022 Do you have kids on your caseload that drop the copula is or are in conversation (e.g. The boy eating)? Here we are using @superduperpub cards to focus on this goal, as well as our print-out lily pads. We use the lily pads as a way of representing each word in the sentence. Pointing to each lily pad as the child says a word, helps them recognise if they have missed the is or are once theyve reached the end. ... Visuals are LIFE for any goal you begin to target. We use them ALL the time at The Speech Spot. They help aid the childs understanding and confidence when learning a new skill. And then slowly we fade them away! #tanealsspeechtherapy See more
