25.01.2022 Sorry that I have been absent on here. Work has been absolutely insane (like 2am-ers most nights just trying to stay on top of it insane) and I haven’t had a spare moment to sit down and put my posts together. So here goes the start of many catch ups... I just wanted to give a big shout out to my first Covid19 class - Keira, Cash, Mya, Diesel, Finn and all of their pawrents. This class is very special to me as they are my first Covid Graduates. They competed week 1 of Founda...tions Class in person but then the virus took off and I had to make the essential decision to move everything online effective immediately. These guys made the transition possible and effortless. They helped me adapt, fine tune and streamline the class to be the awesome online version it is today. Thank you for your understanding, encouragement and support through this challenging time . . . . . #classofcovid19 #foundationsclass #dogobedience #dogtraining #dogtrainer #dogbehaviour #dogbehaviourist #dogclass #dogsofsydney #graduate #sutherlandshire #positive #sutherlandshirebusiness #sydneydogs #sydneypuppies #dogtrainingsydney #lifeskills #sydneydoglife #sydneybusiness #staffy #sweddishlapphund #labrador #kelpie #boxersofinstagram #proud #positivereinforcement #positivedogtraining #onlinedogtraining #covid19 #goinmuttz See more

22.01.2022 Pippa the Labradoodle who when I first met her I accidentally mistook her for a with legs. Oh how she bounded through the air and liked to have a good chomp on human body parts and clothes and wowee did it hurt. With two two young kids who were scared of being around her and for good reason, we needed to put some positive strategies into place quickly to teach Pippa that yes she can chase, mouth, bite, jump, tug, all very species specific behaviours just not on humans esp...ecially the young kids. How did we do this? Through lots and lots of fun games - hyper games, calming games, focus games, impulse control games, target games, snappy reaction games, desensitise and counter conditioning games. The funner the better I have seen Pippa twice now and I am due to see her again in a couple of weeks and I am not going to lie, I am very excited. Between the first and second consult the improvement was huge. I always come in with an expectation of where I think the dog will be up to with progress. These guys well and truly exceeded my expectations. Proof that help from a qualified trainer, time, patience, love and a lot of positive reinforcement works. #dogtraining #dogtrainer #sutherlandshiredogtraining #dogsoftheshire

21.01.2022 Meet Tyson, a Beagle x Harrier with a dashing smile I was called in to work with this handsome boy as his pawrents were really struggling walking him. He liked to pull... a lot, not listen at all and being the social big butterfly he is, could not handle walking past any other dogs or people or distractions without losing it. The issue was as friendly as he is, he came off the complete opposite when he carried on barking and lunging. Given his size, strength and determinat...ion walks were very much dreaded and not enjoyable. This lucky boy has the best pawrents though who have taken everything in their stride to set Tyson up to succeed. They listened intently to my every bit of knowledge and advice and have been hard at work implementing all of the exercises, strategies and games I left them with. And hard work really does pay off. I got a text the other day with this screenshot included of the walk they did that morning. My heart filled with so much warmth, the biggest smile covered my face, I had butterflies exploding in my tummy and I might have done a little (big) happy dance. I could not have been prouder. To you it might seem just a mere walk around the block but to us, Tyson just achieved a massive milestone. They walked around the block (where previously they haven’t been able to leave their street) with Tyson paying attention the whole way. No pulling and no reacting to anything. Wow wow wow and wow! . . . . . #dogtraining #dogtrainer #looseleashwalking #sutherlandshiredogtraining

20.01.2022 This cutie is Raiz! When I first met Raiz she pulled so much on the lead that she physically chocked herself, made her eyes bloodshot and walked on her back hind legs. She also wasn’t that great with staying focused and responsive to her pawrents around distractions, especially if distractions were other dogs. My first goal was to get both Raiz and her pawrents on the same page going towards the same goal speaking the same language. ... Second goal was to teach Raiz that her pawrents are awesome and nothing (even dogs) ever trumps them. They. Are. The. Best. Thing. In. This. Very. Exciting. World! And it pays generously to work with them. Third goal was to introduce the strategies and games in zero - low distraction areas and teach the fundamental skills. Fourth goal was to slowly start introducing the 3 D’s = 1. Distractions 2. Duration 3. Distance in environments Raiz is comfortable in to always set her up to succeed. And succeeding she is! I will post up some progress videos soon but to say I am proud does not justify it. Who is this dog and what have you done to Raiz? . . . . . #dogtraining #dogtrainer #sydneydogtraining #sutherlandshiredogtraining #aussieshepherd #dogofsydney #looseleadwalking #focus #dogdistraction #recalltraining

20.01.2022 The biggest gentle giant I have ever met. Meet Clifford, also known as Mr Smooches. Seriously I have never met a dog who is so chilled and the biggest sook. He has stolen my heart. Clifford had only been with his forever family for 4 weeks when I came in to do a private consultation with him and what an awesome family he has become a part of. The reason for the consultation was to help Clifford overcome his anxiety and stress of being left alone which is expected given he h...as come from the uncertainty of a pound environment and has had so many life changes in such a short period of time. And to help him with his reactivity towards other dogs when out and about so the family can take him on many awesome adventures. Welcome home Clifford, what love you are about to know . . . . . #dogtrainer #dogtraining #sutherlandshire #sydneydogs #dogsoftheshire

19.01.2022 Meet 9 week old Arthur, the whippet. Arthur is currently undertaking Puppy Skills with us as we speak but prior to starting I went over to Arthur’s to help his pawrents successfully set him up in his home environment. Our goal was to establish good behaviours from the beginning to create positive habits long term. Consistent, persistent, positive hard work NOW goes a really long way in the future. Spend the time when they are a puppy teaching them the correct ways of life. Th...at way structure and boundaries are established from the beginning, the expectation level is set, communication is clear and you know how to move forward in a mutually beneficial friendship. When you spend the time doing this correctly, your puppy will thank you by having no need and access to perform undesirable behaviours that make you frustrated and angry and tarnish the very fragile relationship you are building in the initial stages. And the best part about this is you can do all of this without intimidation, punishment, fear... just a whole lot of positive reinforcement, time, patience and love.

14.01.2022 Meet Milly the Spoodle! At the moment Milly doesn’t like anyone except for her beautiful family and her anxiety and uncertainty is channeled through barking. And when I say barking I mean... a lot! If people come into the house she barks at them whole time. If they are there for 15 mins, it is 15 mins. If they are there for 4 hours, it is 4 hours. If she sees a person on the street, you guessed it she won’t stop barking until they disappear well and truly from sight. ... Barking is a very useful mechanism that a dog has. In Milly’s case she uses it on the offensive, her anxiety drives her to the point of hyper vigilance and always on alert for the what if. She doesn’t wait for something to happen and then react, instead she puts her guard up to prevent it from happening in the first place. Milly’s way of controlling her environment and helping her to feel safe. Poor Milly sees other people as a constant threat and the sad thing is she never has respite from it. There are a lot of people out there. Imagine being stuck in this mindset, how exhausting and scary it must be. We have our work cut out for us but already Milly has shown some really positive and promising improvements (photographic evidence right here as she was able to stop barking for a couple of seconds so I could take it ). I might be teaching your humans how to better understand you, but Milly you are definitely one of my greatest teachers. Thank you for helping shape me into the trainer I am today . . . . . #dogtrainer #dogtraining #dogsofsydney #sydneydogs #sutherlandshire

11.01.2022 This is Biscuit This beautiful boy is a kind, gentle soul with a heart full of so much love to give. Biscuits pawrents came to me really upset because of extreme sudden change in behaviour. He was petrified being around them and wouldn’t come out from hiding or to them even if they encouraged him with food. He had completely shut down. All because his mum flicked something off the couch. We have now learnt that Biscuit is petrified of the flicking motion, flicking noise, ...flicking hand signal, anything that involves flicking. Prior to Biscuit’s amazing pawrents adopting him from a rescue organisation, we have no idea where and how he spent the first part of his life, we can only speculate. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if someone told me he had copped a couple of flicks as a puppy for being naughty and the fear has stemmed from there. We can’t change the past but we can dictate the future and through lots of desensitisation and counter conditioning via games we are showing Biscuits that hands or really anything flicking isn’t that scary after all. . . . . . #dogtrainer #dogbehaviourist #sydneydogtraining #stress #fear #anxiety #dogtraining #empower #buildingconfidence #desensitisation #counterconditioning #countercondition #funandgames #doggames #staffyxgermanshepherd #train #sydneydogs #dogsofsydney #sutherlandshiredogs #sydneybusiness #dogtrainingsydney #change #educate #dog #help #success #positivereinforcement #positivedogtrainer #sutherlandshire #goinmuttz

05.01.2022 Wonderful Willow working her magic mat and wowing us

05.01.2022 Rosie with her radiant smile. Rosie spent most of her 2.5 years living in the pound. Prior to finding her forever home with Ashley and Tim, Rosie had been adopted out 3 times. It is unknown of what background she has come from and what exposure she has had to other dogs apart from the ones in the pound with her. Ash got in touch with me to help Rosie over come her new fear towards dogs. 6 months ago Rosie was attacked by another dog and since then has been very reactive hers...elf towards dogs. If the attack was significant enough in the dogs eyes, sadly this is quite a common consequence. Tackling reactivity can be tricky, after all it is a reflexive response and not an intentional one. I can not stress how important it is to seek help by a qualified trainer if your dog is reactive/aggressive. Punishing your dog when acting up and rewarding your dog when they are good will not make the reactive behaviour disappear. Why? Because operant and classical conditioning are very different forms of learning. What you are seeing, the lunging, barking, growling, etc. are all symptoms of how your dog FEELS. We have to change the feeling itself.

03.01.2022 Amongst the restrictions with COVID think of how you felt not being able to see your friends and family when you feel like it. It is pretty confronting and just because your dog a dog doesn’t make it is any less real. Isolation distress in dogs is common and will even be more common on the other side of COVID when human lives go back to normal if correct sensitisation is not done. Isolation distress is when a dog doesn’t want to be left alone and generally any company will do... (it is different to separation anxiety). Meet Mr cool dude. Scooter was in need of some help dealing with isolation distress as he is still a very young pup and has only even known for his human family to be around him 24/7. On the few occasions Scooter’s family has had to leave him for a short period of time, it was evident Scooter was not copping by his lonesome. It is very important if your dog starts to show signs of isolation distress that you address it sooner rather than later by a qualified and experienced dog trainer. As Scooter’s pawrents were very proactive and Scooter is still a very young pup with minimal life experience, we were able to quickly influence Scooter’s perception of being by himself to a positive one and build on the timeframe of which he can be left alone for. . . . . . #isolationdistress #isolationtraining #isolationanxiety #covidpuppy #coronapuppers #dogtrainer #dogbehaviourist #sydneydogtraining #dogbehaviour #positivebehaviour #empower #buildingconfidence #dogpsychology #allbymyself #metime #sydneydogs #dogsofsydney #sutherlandshiredogs #toypoodlepuppy #dogtrainingsydney #sydneytoypoodles #toypoodle #shirepuppies #puppiesoftheshire #success #positivereinforcement #positive #positivedogtrainer #sutherlandshire #goinmuttz

01.01.2022 Meet Riley, a beautiful 5 year old GSD x English Staffy. It is hard to imagine that this handsome boy with his beaming smile could ever end being surrendered. Well he did 6 times the first 3 years of his life. How sole crushing and confusing this world must be for poor Riley. That was until he found lovely Karen and Sally who have given him his forever home for the past 2 years and have only loved him more as the time has gone on. It is important to remember that rescue dog...s don’t just fit in over night. There is a 3-3-3 rule that is a good guideline to follow when bringing home a rescue dog to make sure that adequately adjust into their new life. This is a guideline meaning that every dog is unique and will adjust differently. 3 DAYS TO COMPRESS Feeling overwhelmed May feel scared/unsure of what is going on Not comfortable enough to be themselves May not want to eat or drink Shuts down and/or hides under furniture Tests the boundaries 3 WEEKS TO LEARN YOUR ROUTINE Starts settling in Feels more comfortable Realises this could be their forever home Figures our their environment Gets into a routine Lets their guard down, may begin to show their true personality Behaviour issues may start to appear 3 MONTHS TO START TO FEEL AT HOME Finally feels completely comfortable in their new home Begins to build trust and a true bond Gains a complete sense of security with their new family Sets into a routine
