19.01.2022 With light at the end of the tunnel coming closer, the Academy would like to open up applications for the Future Stars program and also the Rugby League program. The Future stars is a small group of athletes from ANY sport who come together to discuss general fitness and conditioning. The group of athletes also receive presentations on a large number of topics including nutrition, recovery, many areas of psychology including mental toughness and goalsetting along with socia...l media, study skills, cyber safety, media skills and personal development. The program is held over a period of six months with sessions held on a Friday night. Rugby League will obviously have to follow all the rulings as set down by the health department. The opportunity to reboot Sport in a COVID-19 environment is going to be challenging and the Academy must abide by the staged guidelines set down for the return of sporting activity. We have to start somewhere. If you are interested, please go to our website and register your interest. https://goldsport.com.au/programs/future-stars/

18.01.2022 The Gold Coast Academy of Sport annual awards night will be postponed until March 2021 when we hope that regulations are much clearer. A date will be decided upon when the situation surrounding the pandemic lessens. The decision to postpone was taken in light of developments in the COVID-19 crisis and means that the announcement of the awards for all programs held during 2020 and the BMX program conducted in late 2019 will not go ahead until early next year. We believe this is the right thing to do given the changing circumstances in the COVID-19 crisis, said Chair David Eckersley. Well continue to monitor the situation and at the appropriate time will make a decision about when Awards night will be rescheduled.

08.01.2022 Where are they now? In 2018, a young, quiet and reserved young man won the Gold Coast Academy of Sport Male Athlete of the Year. His name Jac Preston and his sport Kart racing. It is always wonderful to hear what they are doing with their sport years after being part of Academy programs and it is heart warming to learn of their successes. ... Last weekend (24/25 October), now 17 year-old Jac competed in his first car race after racing go-karts since 2013. Driving a Mygale SJ2012A Formula Ford, Jac raced at Willowbank’s Queensland Raceway in the Australian Motor Racing Series class for open wheel racing cars. Saturday’s weather conditions were challenging for a newcomer as the area received a torrential storm before Jac’s first race heat on Saturday afternoon. Jac mastered the wet track conditions to win the Formula Ford class and record the 2nd fastest race lap time. Sunday’s race heats 2, 3 and 4 were held under sunny, dry conditions and Jac again placed first in his class to win all 3 heat races and take the overall class round win. Having completed a successful first race meeting in cars, Jac’s ambition is to race in the 2021 Australian National Formula Ford Championship.
