25.01.2022 We have been very busy this year providing all services for cats going to Cat Rescue. This includes major discounts on vaccinations, micro-chipping, worming, parasite control and desexing both males and females. These cats/kittens have been found or rescued from our community and given a second chance at life. Without the ongoing support from many community members this would not be possible. If you are struggling to find a Christmas present for someone who has everything, a donation to Cat Rescue might be the answer. Every single dollar goes directly towards providing these services, so we can continue helping the community reduce the number of unwanted cats. Donations can be made by direct debit, Cash or Card

22.01.2022 HOOKWORM ALERT Hookworm infections can be very serious but easily prevented. Puppies get infected either via the mothers milk, by ingesting the eggs from the ground or the larvae penetrate their skin (or even human skin!) Hookworms live in the small intestine and suck a lot of blood. This causes a severe anemia so the puppy will loose energy and may pass bloody poo. When severe, they can die rapidly without a blood transfusion and worming. We have to collect blood from a...nother dog, then slowly drip it into the anaemic dog, hoping they don't have a reaction. The anaemic dog responds very quickly to the transfusion, with the gum colour improving from white to pink in a short time. Molly saved the life of a 6 wk old, 1.7kg puppy over the Christmas weekend. She had to be sedated so we could take blood from her jugular vein into a special bag before slowly giving it to the puppy. All went very well and it wasn't long before the puppy was bouncing around and ready to go home. Remember to worm your pregnant bitch on the day of whelping then 2 weeks later. Worm your puppies at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 & 12 weeks of age, monthly until 6 months, then every 3 months for life.

16.01.2022 NUTRITION DURING PREGNANCY With Dr Jess’ pregnancy now being over what better time that to discuss the importance of nutrition during pregnancy. Growing puppies and kittens take a lot of energy from the mum and as such we need to make sure we support her with the right nutrition during this time. ... Inadequate nutrition during and after pregnancy can lead to multiple health issues for you pet including: - Dystocia (or difficulty delivering babies) - Milk fever (an extremely serious condition which can lead to death in severe cases) - An increased risk of developing mastitis or not producing enough milk for the puppies/kittens to thrive. We recommend transitioning your bitch or queen onto puppy or kitten specific food as soon as pregnancy is confirmed and continuing feeding this until the babies are weaned. The reason is because puppy and kitten food has a higher calorie content it takes a lot of energy to grow babies and then make milk. The other important factor is the calcium in puppy food, in the late stages of pregnancy when the babies develop their skeletons, it uses a lot of the mothers' calcium supply (as does producing milk). If she is not able to get enough calcium from her diet she can develop milk fever, particularly 1-2 weeks after birth when milk production is at it’s highest. If you have any questions regarding how to feed your pregnant pet please do not hesitate to give the clinic a call

12.01.2022 NUTRITION: PUPPIES & KITTENS Nutrition for puppies and kittens is vitally important, the food they eat is fuelling their growth and will set them up for the rest of their life. In order to build strong, healthy bone and organ function they need to eat the right thing. It has been shown that good quality nutrition in the first 12months of life can increase your pet’s life expectancy. Feeding puppies and kittens has come a long way from weetbix and milk. Deficiencies in... certain vitamins, mineral and micronutrients can lead to developmental abnormalities and increase risk of things like arthritis in later life. We recommend all puppies should be fed a premium quality puppy-specific dry biscuits for the first 12months of life. Large breed dogs like Mastiffs, German Shepherds and Great Danes grow very rapidly and have a much larger Skeleton than small or medium breeds, and so should be on a specific large or giant breed premium quality dry food. One of the most important factors in a premium formulated puppy food is the Calcium to Phosphorus ratio. There is an ideal ratio between the two which allows for optimum bone and joint development in growing dogs. Too much or too little of either of these can result in joint development issues. As there is much less variation in size in kittens we recommend all kittens be on a premium kitten biscuit. One of the important components in kitten food is Taurine which is essential for the development and health of heart muscles. Kittens also should be on kitten specific food for the first 12months of their life to encourage optimum growth and health. Bernadette & Frank are pictured below and are both on Hills Vet Essentials Puppy food which we sell in-store! If you have any questions about what to feed your new puppy and kitten, don’t hesitate to ask our friendly team!

06.01.2022 Desexing is a topic us vets tend to bang on about daily. We would like to explain why there are significant benefits for your animals, especially female dogs when they are desexed. A spey is the surgical removal of the uterus and ovaries and has limited complications. Why we spey dogs - Reduces the chance of mammary (breast) cancers developing. In fact, breast cancers are 200 times less likely to develop if a dog is speyed before their first heat (at 6 months old). With ...a small risk of 0.5% of them still developing. If speyed after a single heat the risk increases to 8% then 26% after the second heat. Eliminate the chance of a Pyometra forming. This is an infection in the uterus that fills with pus. ‘Pyo’ is very common in entire females and is a medical emergency that requires immediate veterinary attention to prevent overwhelming infection and death. The most effective treatment is surgery to spey the dog after medical stabilisation. This is a large, significantly higher risk operation than a regular spey (which will cost 3-4 times more than a spey. Eliminates unwanted litter of puppies which involves- monitoring from birth to 8 weeks of age (feeding, worming, vaccinations, microchipping), rehoming multiple puppies, the costs and the time involved. If your dog is pregnant there is a risk of dystocia (birthing difficulties) such as puppies becoming stuck during labour resulting in a caesarean (which will cost 3-4 times more than a spey), the risk of mum rejecting her puppies and possibly getting milk fever. We have seen an increasing number of cases of the above problems in the clinic the past few months and would like to further everyone’s knowledge on the importance of speying your dogs. Please see in comments some photos of a pyometra, caesarean and normal uterus size. See more

04.01.2022 PARVOVIRUS We have been notified that there have been positive cases of Canine Parvovirus in Townsville. It is very likely it will spread to Charters Towers and surrounding areas. Signs to look for:... Lethargic (lack of energy, dull) Vomiting Diarrhoea with blood Off food Infected dogs shed it in their faeces. It is extremely contagious and can stay alive in the environment for years. It can be carried in on car tyres, on your shoes, clothing and during rainfall. The ONLY way to prevent your dog from the virus is to have them fully vaccinated. Puppies are most vulnerable to this virus - they are not protected until 10 days after their last puppy vaccination at 16 weeks of age. DO NOT take your puppy outside your house yard until this time. Last year we had a major outbreak of Parvo here, but also out on stations and properties. Many of these places had never recorded a single case of Parvo, but it had travelled from in town and surrounding areas (Townsville), on car tyres/shoes. We urge you to be pro-active and book an appointment to get your dogs vaccinated. Parvovirus is a traumatic experience for both the dog and their owner. Please call us immediately if your dog is showing signs - DO NOT ENTER THE CLINIC. Ph: 4787 4949
