This week we showcase one of my favourite lures I use on my charters over the last 3 years the Cranka Crab, Cranka is a Tasmanian based lure company who is run by tournament anglers and they wanted to develop a lure not seen on the Australian tackle scene.... The Cranka Crab is a hard bodied Crab lure with the key being the floating claws that has treble hooks in it which gives you a incredible hook up rate, there is a technique is lure fishing called a reaction bite and the floating claws of the crab imitates a defence mechanism that sparks the fish on to feed. The Cranka Crab suits the waterways of SEQ as we have so much structure and reefs full of crabs and everything loves a crab including me, over the last 3 years guiding we have caught so many species on the Cranka Crab including Big Mangrove Jacks, Trevally, Flathead, Snapper, Spangled Emperor, Estuary Cod, Big Bream and much more. The best technique for the Cranka Crab I find is around flowing deeper structure such as rock walls, pontoons and shallow reefs as this allows the claws to flow & dangle better when it is pushed by the flow of current, it’s best not to move the lure to much just let it naturally flow around on the bottom and keep in contact with it with small sharp flicks every 10 to 20 seconds but you will find 90% of bites will occur on the first drop. 21.01.2022 Andrew has never caught a GT before and today he wanted to tick it off the bucket list, it took a while to find them but when we did we found a heap of them that resulted a few bust offs and this nice 50cm model that put up a great fight.

21.01.2022 Great day on the Gold Coast today for first time lure anglers Andrew & his wife who wanted to come out and learn about the Gold Coast estuary system and how catch fish on lures. 18.01.2022 Great to be back on the water today after a short break for Ronald & Sam’s Gold Coast Charter, the boys normally fish offshore but wanted to come out and see all about lure fishing in the Gold Coast estuary system. 16.01.2022 The storms today reminded me of my scariest moment I ever had fishing when a huge hail storm came through the Gold Coast 7 years ago while fishing on the Coomera River. A guy came out on his pontoon and told me to get shelter as a hail storm was coming, I was in my old Triton Bass a boat and took off to the closest bridge at Paradise point. When I got back to the boat ramp my car was completely destroyed.

Spring is definitely here with longer & warmer days really changing up the fishing in the estuaries, fishing has not been easy the past week with a very slow bite across all waterways, the key this week was to move around a lot to find the cleaner warmer water as this is where the fish will be more active. 10.01.2022 Fishing the last couple weeks has been slow but you always have to change things up to get clients into the fish, the fish are there but the change of season is really playing with the them and interestingly some of the fish we have caught over the last couple weeks are still milking which means they are still in spawn mood but they aren’t in the spawing areas I have never seen Bream and other estuary fish spawn this late up here in SEQ as they normally spawn from April to August so fingers crossed the next couple weeks things pick up. Today at Mooloolaba all but one fish was caught on the Berkley Crabby soft plastic casting extremely tight into structure on a very lightly weight Jighead, check out this capture today by Adam and you will see the fish milking at the end.
