18.01.2022 FINED Two fishers have been fined $15,000 for attempting to conceal illegal mud crabs in a wheelie bin at Hope Island. QBFP officers searched a property and... found a bag of 21 live mud crabs (including 13 undersize male and 8 females) hidden under rubbish in a wheelie bin, despite being told several times that there were no mud crabs in the house. Two fishers were charged with a total of ten offences under the Fisheries Act, including obstruction and using excess and unmarked apparatus, and both pleaded guilty to the charges in court. Luckily, officers released all mud crabs alive into the Coomera River on the day the offences were detected. Report unlawful fishing in Queensland by calling the 24-hour Fishwatch hotline on 1800 017 116 (toll free within Queensland).

12.01.2022 GOLD COAST FISHING REPORT 20/21st June 2020 GOLD COAST OFFSHORE FISHING.... With reasonable weather forecast this weekend, it’s all go to get out offshore and ...catch a feed of reef fish. If you are fishing in on the close 18-24fathom reefs off the Seaway, expect to catch Squire and the odd descent Snapper, Parrotfish, Maori Cod, Cobia and Mulloway ( Jewies ). Out further on the 36 fathom reefs, plenty of Squire and mixed reef fish to be caught. Try fishing with lighter leads and using a couple of snelled hooks and WA Pilchards for bait. The fads along the 36 fathom reefs are still producing plenty of Dolphinfish. On the 50 fathom reefs plenty of quality size Snapper and mixed reef fish. Grab your jigging gear and have a jig on many of the schooled up Yellowtail Kingfish and Amberjack along the 85-100 mtrs depth off the Gold Coast at the moment. Best areas have been off the Jumpinpin around S27 43 E153 43 and they are also starting to school up a bit around S28 01 E153 46. Might have to wait to next weekend before you get a chance to deep drop out wide due to the weather, but try around Riv grounds and Tweed Canyon area for Bar Cod and a Blue Eye. As for trolling there have been quite a few decent sized Black Marlin and Striped Marlin being hooked on bottom fishing gear along many of our offshore Snapper grounds at the moment. Try live baiting for them as they are down deep feeding on the bottom fish and bait at the moment. Out wider a few Blue Marlin, Wahoo and Dolphinfish around that 200-600mtr Depth. Yellowfin Tuna are still being caught in that 600mtr plus depth at the moment. NORTHERN BROADWATER AND JUMPINPIN. This last week has seen plenty of Flathead caught around Tipplers and Pandanus Island areas of the Jumpinpin. Again casting soft plastics or hard body lures has been working best. Tailor have been caught casting metal lures up around the northern end of South Stradebroke Island. Plenty of Bream around the western side of the Jumpinpin area as well as around the deep mud banks of Crusoe and Short Islands. Try for Sand Crabs around Tipplers Channel and Couran Cove area. BROADWATER AND BEACHES The Seaway this past week has been fishing very well. With catches of Flathead, small Snapper, some solid sized Jewfish and still the odd Mangrove Jack. Try fishing along the inside of the Seaway north wall drifting with live baits. Also casting poppers into the whitewater against the rocks will produce big Tailor and the odd GT Trevally and even the odd Doggie Mackerel . Spanish Mackerel are still in the Seaway at the moment, with at least 3 fish being hooked and lost boat side this past week. All three fish were hooked whilst drifting for Jewfish with live baits and then were bitten off next to the boat. The Squid are starting to be caught around the many weed beds along the western foreshore of the Broadwater at the moment in these morning high tides. Plenty of Parrot fish being caught drifting the Shelly bottom along the main western channel of the BROADWATER ( as seen in Brad Smiths Charter Buat pictures), from Sovereign Island to Biggera Creek, Yabbies or Preserved beach worms have been working well to catch them. The rivers are starting to fire up again for Whiting at night in the Nerang River and daytime in the Coomera and Pimpama Rivers. Plenty of 25-32cm. A few Whiting along the Spit and surf beaches. Some Quality sized Tailor are also starting to bite along our beaches at the moment, try using WA Pilchards for bait or spin with 50-80 gram lures during the morning. Try for Mmm Sand Crabs around Sovereign Island in the deep channel edges. SOUTHERN GOLD COAST AND BEACHES Tailor are being caught along our southern beaches late afternoon. Sea Bream and Dart are also in the surf at the moment. Bream are also being caught along the rock walls throughout the Tweed Rivers and the creeks south of Burleigh Heads. Try for Giant Herring and Trevally in some of the land locked lakes throughout the southern Gold Coast area, fish the pipe areas where the water flows through and being the best areas to fish. Still the odd Mangrove Jack in the deeper holes of the Tweed River on live Herring and Mullet Fillets. FRESHWATER DAMS AND CREEKS. Another amazing week of Bass fishing in the Hinze Dam. Try the eastern arm of the Hinze Dam, fishing the tree line and grass beds with Spinnerbaits, spinners and micro jigs. There has been plenty of Talapia everywhere if you want to help control them out of our waterways, Thankyou. - [ ] WHATS ON!! - [ ] Watch and learn from our How to videos on our new You Tube Channel..... 06.01.2022 GOLD COAST FISHING REPORT 30/31st January 2021 GOLD COAST OFFSHORE ... Marlin, Mackerel, Snapper... It’s all happening at the moment off the Gold Coast. Earlier... this week saw Marlin being caught both on live baits and trolling skirts around Spot X. Marlin were also caught along the 36 fathom depth trolling 6-8inch skirts from east of the seaway to north-east of Jumpinpin Bar. Fishing along the 50 mtr depth in similar areas also produced some aerobatic Marlin and the odd Sailfish and Dolphinfish. Snapper have been biting well along the 36 fathom reefs , best method has been fishing with a running 2-4oz sinker and two snelled 6/0 hooks and WA Pilchard, rather then using a heavy 16oz sinker on a Paternoster rig. Worth trying early morning in on the close reefs with same rig but lighter sinkers. There have been a few Cobia around Spot X at the moment whilst fishing live baits mid water. These Cobia are schooling up with the Black Marlin and feeding on the Slimmy Mackerel and Yellowtail bait schools. Wahoo are also getting caught on trolled skirts especially east of 50mtrs deep and out to 100 mtrs deep. The big happening this past week has been the Spotty Mackerel catches along the 20-25mtr depth around Palm Beach Reef, Mermaid Reef and some coffee rock ledges all the way back to the seaway. But the hot spot last weekend for Spotties and Spanish Mackerel, has been out on the Gravel Patch off Burleigh Heads in approx 35mtrs deep. My tips of the week for offshore fishing for this next 7 days are ...... * Spotted and Spanish Mackerel should be on the chew if the weather allows us to get out on maybe Sunday, fish have been caught at Mermaid Reef, Palm Beach Reef and The Gravel Patch. * Try trolling hard body deep diving lures at 6 knots for Spanish Mackerel on the 17-24fathom reefs east of the Seaway, might also be worth using trolled baits as well but slow trolled 2 knots) Try down around east of the casino and Q1 in 40mtrs deep. * The Spanner Crabs should be on the chew, but remember to tie a brick to each pot and attach at least 2 to 3 floats positioned a mtr between each float, onto your pot rope( to battle the current). * Try fishing for Snapper at any of your favorite Snapper marks in any depth between 35-100mtrs deep. They have also been smacking soft plastics this past week, especially in on the close reefs up to 50 mtrs deep. - [ ] For Marlin try trolling skirted lures around Sullies in 49-55mtrs depth, north east of the Jumpinpin down to the Water Tower southeast of the Jumpinpin, also try Flattie Rock in 50mtrs deep northeast of the Seaway. Also trolling along the east side of the 36 fathom reefs from the Jumpinpin Fad No.14 down to Fad 11 east of Surfers Paradise. Or live bait around Spot X and look for bait clusters all the way north up to around S2739 Latitude and then same thing, head south down to as far as around S2804, but keeping between 75-100 mtrs deep, Good Luck - [ ] All in all, it’s similar spots to last week and same techniques, just be careful when crossing any coastal bars and especially on the low tide early morning and during the run out tides. If the swell is over 1mtr, be careful in all the above situations. JUMPINPIN AND NORTHERN BROADWATER... I went up to check out the prawns earlier this week and yep..... the Banana Prawns have started, with guys bagging out most days around the Redland Bay channel, near where it joins onto the Logan River and around Marks Rocks in the start of the Logan River ( about 4 klms up from the mouth of the Logan River). You’ll need a top pocket cast net preferably around 10-12ft drop in size. Be careful and take note of where the rocks are situated when reading your sounder ( as they rip your nets severely !! ). With some nice Flathead caught this past week, fishing the same methods and places around the Jumpinpin has been working well. Cast soft plastics over the edges of the weedy banks and in the shallows 1-2mtrs deep, over and around the weed Try also trolling around Pandanus Island and the banks opposite the old Bedroom and around the flats opposite Tipplers on the high tide. Also try casting soft plastics around the northern entrance of Wally’s Gutter. If you are into bait fishing for Flathead, try drifting over the same areas. With nice early high tides it’s Mud Crab time, so get up into those creeks over this weekend, expect quite a few to be caught. The Whiting are still biting well and are coming out from around Gold Bank’s eastern edges, the bays and main channel at the northern end of South Straddie. The average size has been around that 28cm size. Try also the eastern tip of South Stradebroke Island. Other areas to try are the western side of Kalinga Bank in the narrow channel, the banks heading up towards Jacobs Well from the east and in the Pimpama River. Yabbies and either Blood or Beach Worms are definitely the best baits. Try for Mud Crabs throughout The Logan River and Pimpama Rivers overnight is best. BROADWATER AND BEACHES Wow what a week for big Mangrove Jacks and some solid Jewies in the Seaway. Fishing with live Slimmies or Yellowtail works best and live Pike always smacks them as well . Early morning last of the run out tide should be working well this weekend. Fishing further north in the Broadwater for Flathead, try around Crab Island, The Aldershots, Browns Inlet and along the southern end of South Stradebroke Island around Currigee. Still a few Parrot Fish around the deeper channels of the northern BROADWATER as we have seen caught by Brad Smiths estuary charters this past week. For Whiting, try around the sand bank edges and channel ripples of the Broadwater from west of the Trawlers on the Spit to around Crab Island in the north. Other areas to try are around Buds Beach, the Council Chambers and the Sorrento Straight, use live or frozen Beach worms for bait. For a feed of Mud Crabs, try in both the north and south arms of the Coomera River, the upper end of Coombabah Creek before the sanctuary signs and in salt water Creek. Sand Crabs, try around Sovereign Island both east and west side along the deep channel edges, overnight is best. Try along the Spit and Surf Beaches like Narrowneck for Whiting in any of the holes that run off the banks in the surf along the shoreline. There are plenty of Beach worms to be caught along our beaches at the moment and a few Pippies as well. SOUTHERN GOLD COAST AND BEACHES... There has been a run of Tailor at the moment along the beaches south of Tweed Heads. Mark B from down that way has been doing really well , with catches of Tailor, Whiting, Dart and Bream which he has been mainly catching at night( check out Marks fish photos below ). Fish the shallow gutters and drains of our Southern beaches if you want to have a day fish for Whiting at the moment. You will also catch Dart and Bream, especially if you are using Worms for bait. Bream are also being caught along the rock walls throughout the Tweed Rivers and the creeks south of Burleigh Heads. A few decent Mud Crabs to be caught in the upper reaches of Tallebudgera, Currumbin Creeks and in the Tweed River overnight at the moment. FRESHWATER DAMS Plenty of solid sized Bass and a few Saratoga around the eastern side of the Hinze Dam at the moment. Try looking for the fish schooled up just off the timbers and points. Casting 3-4inch paddle tail soft plastics and slow rolling them back to the boat has been working well. Jig Micro Jigs amongst the schooled up fish if you can see them on your fish finder. WHATS ON!!
