24.01.2022 When did you last see someone with a tattoo of a logo? What does this mean and why would anyone get a tattoo of a corporate identity? Customers don’t buy brands, they join them -Marty Nuemeier, The Brand Flip, 2017... People are searching for ways to express their personal identity. The brands they join help them to express themselves. When a person has a tattoo of a brand they’re aligning themselves with the values of that brand. The tattoo is an extreme example but we express our internal wants through our external needs. When people make a purchase they may think ‘If I buy this, what does that make me?’ All cars fulfil the basic need of getting from one place to another, with the basic need met you begin to base your buying decision on what the car will say about you. Are you an explorer type who is rough around the edges? Perhaps you'll buy a Jeep? Or are you the power and control type who demands authority, perhaps you buy a Mercedes. Our purchases help us to express who we are. Brands that have a strong understanding of who they are and that consistently communicate their values through what they say and do, earn their tribal following. A loyalty that’s so deep people will be willing to tattoo the brand logo on their body forever. What brand would you get tattooed? - Marcus Carman, Founder & Designer, Goodfifty Photo shout outs: Fourstar @timmykean Harley @jesper_friedvive_alive Lulu Lemon @mytattoopaige Adidas @ohthatmarketingguy Rolling Stones @jefftheilamantattoo Nike @jairmalamuerte Odd Future @travxxh #marketing #branding #brandidentity #visualidentity #identitydesign #logo #logodesign #identitysystems #brandstrategy #design #graphicdesign #visualcommunication #graphiccommunication #typography @ Prahran, Victoria

19.01.2022 Typography has to be one of the most universally used communication tools. Like most tools, the majority of people can use them, but in the hands of a pro, it can be a game-changer. I remember when I was studying at University one of tutors telling us that some of us may get end up in information design and become fascinated with bus timetables or fitting giant amounts of information on the top of a drawing pin. Throughout my career, I've come to realise that I may be one o...f these designers. Whenever I get a word document from a client or copywriter. I actually enjoy tidying up all the hierarchy and making it more legible. Creating consistent heading, subheading and body copy sizes creates format and hierarchy that in return makes something more digestible. I get to apply this skill when working on advertising, brochures, magazines, web and many more. I’d go as far as to say it’s one of the most important skills for what designers do. I worked with a colleague who was required to produce social media posts for a client, she appreciated having a few type tips shared with her to make her life easier and said that it was invaluable information. She suggested I share some of these tips. People have written endless books on typography and the vast array of sub-genres within. Pick up a book or search online if you’re interested. Or if you don’t geek out on it as I do. Get a professional to take care of your typography for you. - Marcus Carman, Founder & Designer, Goodfifty #goodfifty #designforsuccess #positivechangeseekers #stylematters #makecoolshit #typedesign #typetips #typography #branding #brandidentity #visualidentity #identitydesign #logo #logodesign #identitysystems #brandstrategy #design #graphicdesign #visualcommunication #graphiccommunication #typography #marketing #communication #type #smallbusinesstips #Smallbusiness #startup #designtips

16.01.2022 So you’ve got a great idea for a business but you don’t know what to name it. Or you have a name but you’re not sure it’s any good... Marty Neumeier outlines 7 criteria for naming your business in his book The Brand Gap. They are:... 1. Distinctiveness Will it stand out amongst the crowd? 2. Brevity Is it short enough to be easily used and recalled? 3. Appropriateness Does it fit with your business? 4. Easy spelling and pronunciation Can you spell it after hearing it? 5. Likeabilty Is it fun to say? 6. Extendability Does it lend itself to business growth? 7. Protectability Can you own it online and offline? Naming isn’t for the faint hearted and can be a real challenge when starting a business. It’s a big commitment and as your brand grows you want to be confident with the name you’ve chosem Having a name that your proud of and happy to share is a great feeling. Even better when you put that name into a designed logo and on your business card. You can then talk about your business with confidence. That’s when it starts to feel like you are behind a great brand. 10.01.2022 Whilst working as Head of Design at @50.Crates, within the team we had the awesome opportunity to redesign the packaging for @shinedrink. I’m so happy to see the new packaging hitting shelves in 7-Eleven. These guys are promoting a healthier and more natural alternative to the typical energy drink. For some products, the packaging is the brand. It's no surprise that the point of sale is arguably the biggest opportunity when influencing a purchase decision. Often in a supermar...ket or other retail packaging presents the opportunity to advertise 100% of people shopping in your category. Making packing a worthy investment and when it's done right it can have a dramatic positive impact on your sales. Marketers will often push left-brain thinking and cover packaging with facts and neglect to bring any emotion to the design. Customers tend to process brand messages on packaging in sequence, they: 1. notice the packaging 2. wonder 'what is this?' 3. ask themselves 'why should i care?' 4. desire more information 5. they compare the features, benefits, price, etc to help them reach their final decision. By beginning with features and benefits you skip the opportunity to stand out, create intrigue and educate the customer about your product. If you'd like to find out more about Shine and their nootropics drinks, check out shinedrink.com.au or @shine.drink I would like to acknowledge 50 Crates as the owners and lead agency for this project. I was responsible for concepts and final design of the packaging as well as refining the logo and redefining the look and feel of the brand identity.
