25.01.2022 Yogurt pancakes from previous post. I made them again for breakfast yesterday and today I have popped leftovers in the toaster for breakfast again. Topped with stewed apples (great for gut health!) - peeled and chopped apples stewed in a little water, butter and lots of cinnamon. I sprinkled some hemp seeds over as well. My daughter LOVES stewed apples and the hemp seeds add some protein and more fat (besides the butter). I also added candied walnuts - chopped walnuts with a... little butter and tiny drizzle of honey, stirred for a few minutes over low heat. Added more butter and cinnamon to the pancakes and a teeny drizzle of maple syrup over the whole thing. Delish!

24.01.2022 Made my own cream cheese and whey yesterday using the super easy method in the Nourishing Traditions book. Basically just drained the liquid for a whole day from my Jalna Dairy Foods biodynamic whole milk yogurt, and now I have good quality cream cheese (I added a little Himalayan salt and it is delicious) and some whey, which has so many uses. So easy!

23.01.2022 This photo isnt much, but this is a delicious pancake! The other day when Leigh was out shopping, he couldnt get our regular yogurt (@jalna_yoghurt biodynamic full fat whole milk yogurt) so he searched around for something else without any sugar or junk in it, and came home with a "high protein" yogurt. Scanning the label, I could see there wasnt any crappy ingredients...except...they used skim milk. Meaning, fat taken out (hence higher protein left behind). ... This yogurt was chunky and did not taste great. Not creamy, or tasty, due to removed fat. We also had some goats milk in the fridge that no one was loving. So I thought Id use up these unwanted ingredients in a pancake! And it worked. 250g gross yogurt (or any thick yogurt or ricotta) 1 tbsp coconut sugar 1 egg 250g goats milk (or any type of milk) Drizzle of vanilla paste or extract Pinch salt 1 tbsp baking powder 150g spelt or kamut flour (may work with gluten free flours but I havent tried) Butter and/or coconut oil Mix/blend all ingredients except butter/oil until its a very smooth batter. Add butter/oil to a hot pan and pour pancakes to desired size. Flip when just starting to bubble on edges. Keep an eye on it. Top with real butter, cinnamon, and real maple syrup, or ricotta or fruit or coconut butter or coconut yogurt or whatever you prefer. Put your leftovers in the fridge or freezer and pop in the toaster for a meal or snack another time. Enjoy (Recipe inspiration by @louisekeats) See more

22.01.2022 I've been loving making simple sauces lately with fresh or frozen berries (a good way to use up berries) by just warming them on low heat on the stove. They break down beautifully and are great on pancakes, stirred into yogurt, in tarts, or anything else! Today I added hemp seeds (for some protein and healthy fats) after I turned the heat off and this will be going on leftover pancakes from yesterday for Maya and I.

21.01.2022 Next availability is early June-ish. I only take very limited bookings and they fill up quickly. If you've been considering seeing me, book ahead and book early. 19.01.2022 I have been asked what cake I chose to bake for my daughters first birthday. It was to be her first taste of cake/sugar and of course a special birthday! Although she didnt want to do anything with it except squish it and throw it around (& eat all the raspberries off the top!), we enjoyed it! Recipes were the Classic Butter Cake and Better Buttercream Icing (raspberry) from Jude Blereau Wholefood Cooking s book, Wholefood for Children. ... It was important to me to use natural and as healthy as possible ingredients for this cake, so this was made with spelt flour (instead of all-purpose/wheat flour), coconut sugar and raw sugar (instead of refined white sugar or brown sugar), real butter (instead of vegetable or seed oils), and natural pink colouring and flavouring from raspberry pure instead of fake lab-made alternatives. You can easily make these substitutions in any old cake or cookie recipe you come across! Not all flours can easily be subbed in, but I find spelt flour (if you can have gluten) can be used with no other changes required, same with real butter/ghee/coconut oil/olive oil rather than vegetable oil, and coconut sugar/rapadura sugar instead of the white stuff. These changes will make a big difference to the nutritional value of your baking, and you may even see less negative side effects to your health. Give it a try and let me know how it goes! Or do you already bake this way? See more

19.01.2022 FINALLY got my kid to sleep for her nap today. I did not think it was going to happen. Now mama is going to enjoy a homemade creamy hot chocolate with homemade marshmallows. Should I add a few more?

19.01.2022 A year ago... I had a #homebirthcesarean. I laboured at home for 72 hours before transferring to hospital (+ another 33 hours).... We did everything we could at home for 3 days once labour began. Contractions around the clock. A lot of support from @yarravalleymidwives @sacred_ways_of_being @breedownes_doula_photographer. It was helping but oh so slowly. Maya's positioning was making it very difficult and who knew what else was holding things back. On Monday night we decided it might be a good idea to go to hospital and try some other measures. by @breedownes_doula_photographer @ Grace Miano - Goodness Gracious Health

19.01.2022 Do you ever find that you buy some herbs for a particular dish and then the rest of the bunch rots in your fridge? And then next time you need them you buy them again, and end up throwing most of it out once again? It's such a waste! Here's a simple way to save money and waste: after you've finished using what you need, clean and freeze the rest of the bunch in a small freezer proof bag or container! Or when you notice they are starting to wilt, pop them in the freezer be...fore you have to throw them out. You will save the wastage AND you'll have herbs handy in your freezer for the next time (or several times) you need them for a recipe. Convenience and money saved. Easy! See more

17.01.2022 Creamy hemp milk. This is very difficult to make. Are you ready? Sprinkle hemp seeds into powerful blender. Pour in some water. Blend until seeds are totally obliterated and you have creamy milk. I don't even strain it. The end.

16.01.2022 My variation on @chefpeteevans paleo banana bread. Using walnut flour instead of almond. We can't do almonds or cashews in our house right now, so I have to get creative! The loaf enveloped the banana to make a nice heart in the middle.... Yum!

15.01.2022 Do you like beets/beetroot? Although it has an earthy (dirt?) flavour, beetroot is a beautifully nutritious food, and with the right preparation, also very delicious! My daughter LOVES this chunky dip! And you will too.... I don't measure when I make this, as I just go by taste, so just go with what tastes good to you. The idea for flavours came from a commerical dip that I wanted to recreate with healthier ingredients and without the inflammatory seed oils (canola) and preservatives, flavourings, etc. Here's how (roughly!): 2 or 3 roasted beetroot (I usually just put these whole in the oven on 180C for an hour, and then a day or two later or whenever I have time, I trim the ends and cut into big chunks - skin stays on if they are organic) goat's cheese/chevre - usually the whole thing a clove of garlic or good sprinkle of garlic powder a large spoonful of grated horseradish drizzle of olive oil drizzle of apple cider vinegar or lemon/lime juice salt and pepper optional: dried herbs Blend everything up in a blender/food processor until desired chunkiness or smoothness. Taste as you go and adjust to suit you. I play around with it every time. Eat with vegetable sticks, some nice rice or seedy crackers, or plain organic corn/nacho chips. Or straight off a spoon like Maya! See more

15.01.2022 Caramelized cabbage, bacon and leek stirfry! This was part of our breakfast this morning and we all loved it, especially my 16 month old daughter! The cabbage was carmelized and soft, with the delicious flavours of bacon, garlic and leek. We ate this with local free range eggs on buttery real sourdough toast. Delish!... Chopped bacon cooked in lots of olive oil, with garlic and leek added, then shredded cabbage added with the heat turned up high so it caramelizes and softens. Yummy! Recipe inspiration from @lifechangingfoodbook

15.01.2022 This one is worth sharing. A raspberry banana smoothie with some brain power behind it. Just blend together until smooth:... small handful fresh or frozen raspberries 1 frozen banana (or to taste for sweetness) a few raw cashews handful walnuts 3 or 4 heaping big spoonfuls of full fat plain yogurt of choice 1 tsp vanilla sprinkle of acai powder (optional) milk or water to desired consistency Yum! Have you guessed what the super brain power ingredient is? See more

14.01.2022 A little thrown-together experiment: simple chocolate chip macaroon cookies. Nut butter, honey/maple syrup, dark choc chips, shredded coconut, flaxseed meal, sprinkling of (spelt) flour. 13.01.2022 This was me a day before my March 31st estimated due date last year. I was huge! I loved being pregnant and famously said I'd be happy to go to 42 weeks. I had zero idea what I was in for with my upcoming labour and birth!!! (See my previous posts for the whole story) Maya was 'due' on March 31st, but she decided to hang out in my womb until she was born on April 17th, after several days of labour. Now, as we approach her first birthday in just over 2 weeks, I am s...till very much aware on a daily basis just how fortunate we are to have her. In the still moments when she is in her safe place in my arms, having a breastfeed, or sleeping by my side, I stare at her perfect baby face, chunky cheeks, long dark lashes, squishy little lips, brush the hair off her face, and know that I am lucky. Luckier than many. I think about how this very nearly may not have been our present reality. So even though the world is going through a bizarre blip at the moment, I am still here, not much has changed, just hanging out with my little best friend and pretty damn thankful for it. See more

13.01.2022 My recent epic fails! So I made some hot cross buns. They were meant to be spelt flour ones, but halfway through the recipe I realised I didn't have enough spelt flour. So I made up the difference with sorghum flour. Sorghum is gluten free and doesn't behave the same way, so I kind of figured they wouldn't be as fluffy. Well...let's just say I could seriously injure someone or play ice hockey with these hockey pucks! ... BUT, they still taste delicious so I've been eating them with obscene amounts of butter, sometimes warmed or toasted. Oh, and I made some marshmallow to use to pipe the crosses, but because I had to fiddle with the buns so much, it set so I couldn't use it! Next I started making some chocolate (so I could make some rocky road with that marshmallow) and realised I didn't have enough maple syrup or honey. All I had was some raw sugar so I thought I could use that and try and melt/dissolve it. This did NOT work, no matter how much I stirred or heated it. It was a sludgy mess. I didn't want to waste the ingredients so I added an egg, some baking powder and sorghum flour, popped it in the oven and made a sort of chocolate brownie cake thing. It smelled incredible baking. Unfortunately it is a bit crumbly and somewhat sand-like, but it does taste delicious so I am eating it! What epic kitchen fails have you had? 13.01.2022 Chocolate rice crisp squares! I saw someone post an amazing looking chocolate crackle by @marikaday, but I didn't have the ingredients for that one, so I modified to suit my needs. This recipe gives many options and is very versatile, so have fun experimenting. What you need:... 80g of any nut/seed butter 1/3 cup solid fat - butter/ghee/coconut oil 1/3 cup liquid sweetener - maple syrup/honey 1-2 tsp vanilla extract/paste/powder 3 cups of puffed white or brown rice 1/2 cup desiccated or shredded coconut 30-40g of raw cacao or unprocessed cocoa powder pinch good salt optional: choc chips, chopped nuts or dried fruit, seeds, cacao nibs, cinnamon. Gently melt fat, nut butter, sweetener, vanilla together. Pour into a large bowl with the remaining ingredients until well combined. Press into a lined pan and pop into freezer until solid. Cut into squares and enjoy! Store in the fridge or freezer as they will soften otherwise. See more

13.01.2022 Homemade cinnamon playdough. I finally managed to whip up a batch of playdough for my 20 month old this morning! This playdough has nothing toxic, dangerous or inedible in it, so it is "taste friendly" for those little ones who may try to mouth it (although it would taste pretty gross!). Here's how (recipe inspiration from @play_at_home_mummy with my tweaks)...... In a big bowl, mix together using a wooden spoon: 1 cup flour (I used kamut this time) 1/2 cup fine salt (I used pink himalayan) 1 tbsp cream of tartar 2 tsp cinnamon (or cacao) Then add and mix thoroughly together: 1 tbsp oil (I used olive this time) few drops of natural food dye (next time I'm going to try beetroot juice!) 1 cup of boiling water Keep adding sprinkles of flour until no longer too sticky. Turn out onto bench/counter and knead until it all comes together into a smooth non-sticky ball. When it's cooled down a bit, store in a container at room temp, or in fridge for longer. I haven't tried gluten free flour yet, but I'm guessing the gluten might be important for this to come together. I think because I used kamut instead of wheat, I did need to add more flour several times before it was no longer sticky. Let me know if you've used gluten free flour successfully! Have you made playdough yourself?

10.01.2022 1 year ago today... It was Saturday morning and even though waters broke Thursday night, nothing had started right away, so I assured Leigh he could go to work on Friday and I'd call if anything happened (nothing happened). Memory is a little blurry, but I also believe our Yarra Valley Midwives came by on Friday to check that me and baby were ok. Everything was great, so we waited...... Things kicked off Friday night almost exactly 24 hours after waters broke. I laboured all night long, but mild enough that I could sleep between contractions and so I didn't bother to wake Leigh either. Would we have our baby today?! As it turned out, not today! We spent a lot of time walking and labouring on the beach behind our house. Would baby be joining us tomorrow? @ Grace Miano - Goodness Gracious Health See more

10.01.2022 A year ago today... I transferred to hospital in labour after 72 hours. Add another 33 hours labouring (including 4.5 hours pushing) before Maya finally joined us earthside. 08.01.2022 Do you ever buy a bunch of herbs for a specific recipe, use what you need, and the rest slowly rots in the fridge until you end up throwing it out? Then next time you need a little you go out and buy a bunch and the cycle of waste begins again? No need to waste it. Freeze them! Here I have cleaned and stored some extra herbs I had on hand (that I was never going to use on time and were already going off) in bags to go into the freezer. I often do this, and then I have what I ...need waiting for me in the freezer next time I need it. You can also dry your herbs, but that's easier done with some than others. How do you reduce herb waste?

08.01.2022 Wow. Everyone stop what you are doing (which is likely hanging at home in your pj's?) and make this Apple Tea Cake by The Healthy Chef It is incredible. And unlike other apple recipes that use up just one or two of those hundred apples you need to use up before they rot, this one uses A LOT of fruit. For variations, I used a combo of melted butter and coconut oil for the oil, and half and half apple and pear because I had several sort of bland pears (which now tast...e amazing in this cake!). I also added a bit of ginger with the cinnamon. This is so delicious. I just had a big slice warm and buttered with my rooibos chai tea. See more

08.01.2022 The new beach litter. Gross. I also see masks (and some gloves) on my daily walk on a nature track.... Are you seeing much of this kind of litter?

07.01.2022 Made my own peanut butter last night. Want the recipe??? 1. Buy some raw peanuts.... 2. Roast them. 3. Rub off the red skins. 4. Grind in your food processor until the oils release and it is smooth. That's it. I add nothing to mine. Just be careful - you need a powerful device and I have heard of people burning out the motor. I blended for about 9 minutes total in my thermomix. Do you make your own nut or seed butters? See more

07.01.2022 Easy peanut butter fudge! So easy. Equal parts peanut butter and butter (by weight), a quarter to half that amount in maple syrup/honey/coconut syrup (to taste). Add splash vanilla and pinch salt. That's it! I've done small amounts and larger amounts in bigger tins. Just line with baking paper and pop in freezer to set. Keep in fridge or freezer or it'll melt.... I haven't tried, but I'm sure you could swap out butter for coconut oil, and peanut butter for any nut or seed butter. You'll just obviously have different flavours. I think hazelnut butter and some cacao would be delish!

06.01.2022 This smoothie is the business. Frozen mixed berries, coconut yogurt, half a medjool date, sunflower seeds, walnuts, vanilla protein powder, coconut and oat milks. Perfect for baby and me.

04.01.2022 On a crappy windy and gloomy day like today, a warm, spiced, buttery apple crumble with salted caramel coconut custard really hits the spot! You can totally make an apple crumble without a recipe, but this time I did something like this (it is very rough!)... Core and slice about 8 small-medium apples (didn't bother to peel) and add to casserole dish. Sprinkle with about 1 tbsp of cinnamon and a sprinkle of nutmeg and toss through. Add a couple big globs of butter on top a...nd put into a 180C oven while you prepare the crumble topping. To a bowl, add about 1.5 cups rolled oats, about 1/4 cup flour of choice, optional seeds or shredded coconut (this time I threw in a small handful of hemp seeds), 1-2 tbsp (coconut) sugar, another big spoonful of cinnamon, sprinkle of nutmeg, and any other spices you like (cardamom, ginger, etc). Mix thoroughly. Add about half a cup (or more) of cubed butter (or cold chunks of coconut oil) and a drizzle of vanilla and massage/squish it all thoroughly together with your fingers until it seems well mixed and chunky/clumpy. Take the apples out of the oven and toss through now the butter has melted. Carefully and evenly add your crumble topping and back into the oven for 30-45 minutes (until apples are bubbling and top is golden). Delicious as is warm or cold, with cream, or custard. Custard recipe is courtesy of Quirky Cooking - I just added a little extra butter and salt. Together this was Let me know if you try it x

04.01.2022 Last night's simple and nutritious dinner is today's quick and easy breakfast! My take on savoury mince a la @jowhitton - spring onion, carrot, tomato, beef mince, zucchini simmered in @gevityrx beef bone broth. Served atop roasted cauliflower and pumpkin mash, with a spoonful of sauerkraut. Last night I chopped up the cauliflower and pumpkin into small pieces and drizzled with olive oil, dried herbs, salt and pepper, and put into a 180C oven while I then made the savour...y mince. Easy meal! My 17 month old daughter loves sauerkraut, so she gobbled that up first. Such a delicious, nutritious and warming meal on this cold and windy morning. 03.01.2022 Need a super quick and delicious dinner idea? Didn't get a "before" photo, so this photo of the remnants will have to do! Sauté some chicken, make up a satay (peanut) sauce, chop up some carrots and cucumber, use some lettuce or other as wraps, some coriander would be great too, and there you have satay chicken wraps! So delicious! ... Your family can make them up themselves at the table. My toddler had this 'deconstructed'. *I used the simplest satay sauce as I was super short on time - I blended peanut butter, garlic, tamari/soy, sesame oil, coconut sugar, water, salt.

03.01.2022 A lesson in children's eating preferences! Do you have a "picky" eater? Or does your child seem to have limited preferences and tastes? Do you wish your child would widen the variety of foods they eat? Sometimes persisting with exposure and modeling can be the key!... Case in point: I've been offering my 20 month old toddler eggs since sometimes after she started solids at 6 months of age. She has never been keen on them. She would either not be interested or only have little tastes. I never used coaxing, coercion, bribery or forcing. Just regularly offering eggs cooked in different ways, and modeling eating and enjoying them myself. I also let her handle eggs, put them away, and help/watch me cook them. I wanted Maya to like eggs because they are so nutritious, but I also accepted that it may not be her taste and we all have different preferences. Well, to my surprise and delight, she started to choose to eat eggs recently. And appearing to really enjoy them. Mostly as omelettes or fried eggs, and some boiled eggs. And today, she straight up chose to pick up a whole boiled egg and eat it that way. I would guess that I "exposed" her to eggs at least 150-200 times before she wanted to eat them. Don't give up! Just keep gently offering and modeling different foods. Get your children involved in shopping, gardening, preparing, cooking. Try to avoid coercion, persuasion, bribery, punishment, etc. These techniques can create an unhealthy relationship with food. And the mealtime power struggle is not fun or worth it. I'd love to hear your experiences!

02.01.2022 Happy birthday, my little sweetheart. Although April 17th came and went as just another day for everyone else, for us it was the one year anniversary of the day you entered our lives and changed us forever. Truly our rainbow after the storm, you came along and we still can't believe that you decided to stay, after the 3 babies we lost before you.... Our firey little rainbow Aries girl, you are truly the best thing that has ever happened to us and we couldn't imagine life any other way. 01.01.2022 My variation on @chefpeteevans paleo banana bread. Using walnut flour instead of almond. We cant do almonds or cashews in our house right now, so I have to get creative! The loaf enveloped the banana to make a nice heart in the middle.... Yum!
