24.01.2022 Did you know that this week is Dental Health Week? This annual campaign aims to educate Australians about the importance of maintaining good oral health. The focus of this year’s campaign is on the harm sugar does to oral health, aiming to help Australians to ‘get sugar savvy! One of our parents, Mariam who is an Oral Health Therapist offered up some of her valuable time on Monday to come out to educate children about the importance of brushing our teeth with the right techn...ique through role play and storytelling. As you can see from the pictures, the children had an awesome time listening to the story of Dr. Rabbit Meets a Brushalotamus and brushing Dragon’s teeth using the giant yellow toothbrush. Mariam even brought a hygiene pack for every child to bring home too. We would like to thank Mariam from Tandara Dental Centre for sharing this important message with the children.

We read, sing, talk and rhyme with the children every day to help them achieve their development milestones at Goodstart Canning Vale - Batman Road. Today, we were privileged to have Anthony Albanese, Federal Labor Party Leader and Matt Keogh MP, Federal Member for Burt visit our centre and read ‘Little Barry Bilby had a Fly Upon His Nose’ to the Kindergarten children. During the book reading session, the... children were active participants as they interacted with Anthony and Matt about the Australian animals in the book. From all of us at Goodstart Canning Vale - Batman Road, here’s a big thank you to Anthony and Matt for making the time to read and play with the children this morning. You are always welcome to visit us any time! #Paint the Highway REaD - Gosnells

17.01.2022 A little bird a.k.a Mr. Google told us that it was Anthony Albanese, Federal Labor Party Leader's birthday on Tuesday. Hence, our Kindergarten Teacher, Ling and Educator Mue together with the children organized a special surprise. After the reading session, the children surprised Anthony by singing the Happy Birthday song which was thoroughly enjoyed by Anthony and everyone present. Once again, wishing you a very Happy Birthday, Anthony! ... Here’s the video that captured the moment.

17.01.2022 Australia Day is fast approaching so today we made some Australian flags with blue and red paper. The children were developing their fine motor skills and hand eye coordination.

16.01.2022 As we celebrate Goodstart’s 10th birthday today, I thought it’d be a good idea to look back in time to find a photo of educators who have been with Goodstart since the beginning. After lots of digging and searching, the only photo we could find was a photo taken in 2012. Here are the four longest running educators who have been with Goodstart the whole 10 years and they are still working in our centre! From the left Sumi (11 years), Sandra (12 years), Tarryn (14 years). Les...ley has also been with us for 15 years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my whole team of dedicated educators, families and children for being with us throughout the 10 years. I am honoured to work with each of you at Goodstart Batman Road. A big thank you to Katie from Jesson Flowers for the beautiful balloons! Definitely made our 10th birthday feel extra special today. Here's to the next 10 years together, Kenneth

16.01.2022 We are still open and are here to support our families.

15.01.2022 Our new look Goodstart@home brings you so much moreand it’s FREE for our families! We recently launched a new online at-home learning and activity hub called Goodstart@Home and were overwhelmed with the response from families. In less than two weeks we had almost 10,000 families sign up! This inspired us to explore how we might be able to grow this further and offer even more to families across Australia.... Over the past week we’ve been busy working behind the scenes to create an enhanced version of Goodstart@Home on a brand-new platform, which will take our support for your at-home learning journey to a whole new level! What’s different in the new Goodstart@Home? - More ‘things to do’ for learning and fun for families - Recipes and ideas for cooking with kids - Support, articles and resources for parents - A brand new Behaviour Support Kit that you can order to be sent to your home! How can you sign up? If you haven’t already subscribed to the old version, you will receive an email from us that will give you a ‘unique code/link’ that you will be able to use to subscribe to the new platform for free. If you have already subscribed, you will have received your email over the weekend with a unique link to automatically transition you to the new platform. If you haven’t yet received this email, we recommend you check your junk/spam folders just in case! We’re really excited about extending our learning support into the homes of families across Australia. We’d love you to share your experiences with Goodstart@home across social media tagging with hashtag #gsathome so we can all #stayconnected. Happy learning!

15.01.2022 How we teach our Kindergarten children to write. Our curriculum is based on a play based philosophy which invites each individual child to be open-ended, hands-on and self-guided in their learning. We engage with children individually and as a community of learners, supporting children's unique interests and learning, as well as the contribution they make to the whole learning environment. The children in the Kindy room have been role playing doctors and nurses and caring f...or the dolls in the room. Hence the educators set up a role play area with blankets, doctor's outfits, dolls, teddies, first aid kits with surgical gloves, bandages, plasters and dressings to increase the real-life elements. The educators talked about needing each ‘patient’ to come and check in at the desk and how they must write their names down in a list. This was to introduce some purposeful writing opportunities and for understanding why and when adults might use writing in these scenarios. As an example, Mia was very keen to give all her little patients names and to have a go at writing them on the list, while the educators spelt out the names phonetically. While using the medical instruments, we talked about what each one was used for and what it could tell us about the patient’s medical conditions. The children were particularly keen on the stethoscope and tried listening out for any funny noises from all parts of the bodies! The doctors examined the patients, diagnosed them and then administered treatment, lying them in their little beds and tucking them in to recover. Through this play experience, we also focused on emergent reading of signs and labels in a role play environment, purposeful pre-writing about real life contexts, mark making and emergent writing, list making and new medical vocabulary.

13.01.2022 Nothing beats those fresh air feels!! Check out our Kindergarten children having fun exploring their outdoor environment. Did you know playing freely outdoors helps children with the development of social skills, spatial awareness, cooperation, communication and sensory awareness. Outdoor play can also assist children to learn about decision making, develop their ability to share, develop conceptual ability, the ability to imagine an idea without seeing it in practice, learn about their body and their ability as well as become more independent and address their fears.

13.01.2022 The centre is covered in a sea of red this morning! Thank you to all families for participating in Red Nose Day by dressing your child in red to spread awareness.

12.01.2022 NAIDOC Week 2020 Always Was, Always Will Be is the designated theme for NAIDOC Week 2020. Each year, NAIDOC Week is celebrated across Australia to acknowledge the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Goodstart Canning Vale Batman Road began NAIDOC Week celebration with great pomp and splendour! ... As part of the centre’s Reconciliation Action Plan, weekly assemblies are held to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which the children meet and play. These assemblies involve children’s active participation and engagement to ignite their curiosity about reconciliation in the early years. A very special assembly for NAIDOC Week was organized by the team to showcase the centre’s reconciliation journey and celebrate the unique history and culture of Indigenous people. Invitations were sent out to Matt Keogh MP, Federal Member for Burt, Whadjuk Elder Kevin Fitzgerald and Goodstart families to be part of the celebration. The assembly was kickstarted with Acknowledgement of Country by Educational Leader Sandra D’Rozario, then followed on with singing of a Noongar song named ‘Wanjoo (Welcome)’. Mia, Evan and Royce from Kindergarten bravely stood on stage and led the singing. Children as young as 5 months old up to 5 years old were seen participating enthusiastically with clap sticks, tambourines and shakers. The children continued to sing ‘Hello to all the children of the world’ to acknowledge the diverse cultures of the centre. Mr Keogh was invited on stage to talk about reconciliation and he explained reconciliation means saying sorry to the children. Mr Keogh went on to say when we have done something wrong to our friends, it is important that we say sorry so that we can all be friends again. That’s what reconciliation is all about. Mr Keogh then invited children to come on stage to receive the Australian flag, Aboriginal flag and Torres Strait Islander flag. Mr Keogh also presented Centre Director Kenneth Leong with the certificate of ‘National Apology to Australia’s Indigenous Peoples’ as a token of appreciation for the centre’s efforts in educating children about reconciliation. The assembly concluded with the unveiling of the centre’s totem ‘Banskia plant’ that was assigned by Whadjuk Elder Kevin Fitzgerald. In Indigenous culture, a totem is a plant or animal that is given to a child at birth. It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that their totem is looked after and protected. Elder Kevin assigned Banksia plant as our totem because it is largely found in Canning Vale area. By planting and caring for our Banksia totem, we aim to educate children about the rich cultural history of Indigenous people. Our service values the importance of collaborative partnerships with local communities. This endeavour led to Benara Nurseries and Kings Park and Botanic Garden being involved in this reconciliation project by providing Banksia plants and pods.

01.01.2022 Early literacy is the foundational groundwork on which all future reading growth is dependent upon. At Batman Road, we support early literacy development by making reading fun, communicating with children through open-ended questions and playing with rhyme. We believe that children develop and learn best through play and repetition, hence our curriculum also incorporates fun activities like singing, rhyming and games. The Kindy children were very excited to have Pete the P...ossum from Paint the Highway REaD visit us and read a special book titled ‘Children of the world.’ It was a great opportunity to focus on language development, focused attention, book awareness, phonological awareness and pre-writing skills. #paintthehighwayread
