18.01.2022 Our friends at Kidsafe WA have released their Hot Cars Campaign and a great reminder for us all, with summer weeks away. Every year approximately 5,000 Australian children are rescued from cars. Three-quarters of those children are under four years old. Even on a cool day the temperature in a parked car can be over 30 degrees - hotter than outside. In fact, 75% of the total temperature rise can occur within the first five minutes of parking a car. Check out Matt Moran's Unconventional Oven to see just how hot and deadly for children being left in hot cars can be

14.01.2022 How can I encourage my toddler to scribble and draw? Set up your budding artist with big sheets of paper taped to the table or to the floor. Lining wallpaper also makes useful drawing paper. If you're concerned about anything getting messy, cover it up. Offer your toddler thick, sturdy crayons, washable pens, or washable paints. In the summer months, you could try chunky chalk to use on paving stones. ... A fun activity you can do with your toddler is collecting leaves from your garden or local park. Look for leaves of varying shapes and textures. Help your toddler to dip them into paint and place them on the paper to see what prints and patterns he can make. Even if it ends in a mess of paint and squashed leaves, he'll have fun getting there! It's best to let your child experiment and explore rather than giving him instructions. So let him put his hands in some paint, mix all the colours together, or scribble all over a piece of paper if he wants to. This will give him confidence in what he can achieve and it will also help him to feel a little more independent. Whatever your toddler creates, praise it! You could also put it on display in your home. This will show him that you value what he creates

07.01.2022 "Letting children have control does not make them feel entitled, it makes them feel empowered" - J. Milburn. Offering controlled choices means providing a fe...w options, all of which you are okay with. Giving children the power to make choices allows them to take part in the decision-making process, which can increase engagement, prevent negotiation and power struggles, and decrease "problem" behaviour. Here are some examples of controlled choices: This or that? E.g. Would you like to wear shorts or a skirt today? How to do it? E.g. Should we walk or run to the car? How many? E.g. Should we leave the park in 5 or 10 minutes? Who will help? E.g. Do you want mum or Aunty Sarina (or teddy?!) to buckle your seat? What colour? E.g. Would you like the red plate or blue plate for dinner? #controlledchoices #workseverytime #empoweringchildren #empoweringparents #parenting #parenteducation #earlychildhood #childhooddevelopment #teachersofperth #teachersfollowteachers #teachersdownunder #downunderteachers #perthkids #kidsofperth #occupationaltherapy #otforkids #paediatrics #psychology #childpsychology #responsiveparenting

07.01.2022 The need to feel safe is primal. Were wired to fight or flee anything that presents itself as a threat - and shame, punishment, judgement, exclusion, humiliati...on all count as threat, even if they come with loads of love. . When our kids or teens mess up - which they will, because theyre humans not robots - the way we respond can open them up to our influence or shut them down to it. It can expand the fight and the disconnection, or it can shrink it. In time they will learn to be more in control of their urge for or flight, but for now, we will need to lead the way. (Of course, we are also human, and sometimes despite our biggest efforts to stay calm, we will step into the ring rather than wait for them to step out. Were human. Its going to happen. And thats okay.) . If we want them to be open to our influence, we first need to calm their active amygdala (the seat of anxiety and big emotion) by sending the message that we arent a threat. We can do this by validating their feelings or the need behind their behaviour (if we know what that is). . Validation doesnt mean agreeing with them, and it doesnt mean approving of their behaviour. What it means is letting them know that we want to understand the world through their lens. I can see youre really upset about this. It sounds as though youre worried Im going to get in your way. I can see this is important to you. I really want to understand. Can you talk to me about this? . When we do this, it sends a message to the protective, powerful, emotional amygdala that its safe and that it can back down. This will start to switch off the need to fight us or flee (ignore) us and open them up to our influence, support, warmth and guidance. . It also doesnt mean giving them a free pass on unadorable behaviour. What it means is letting them know that we see them, and that we understand there is something important they need. When things are calm, they will be much more open to exploring their decisions, their behaviour, the consequences of that (including any consequences for them), and what they can do differently in the future. 05.01.2022 In the Kindergarten room we have set up a quiet, comfortable and safe space for children to spend time to relax and calm their bodies and emotions. The Kindy children talk to an Educator about how they are feeling and ask if they can spend some time in the Calming Cottage. The Calming cottage contains a variety of sensory items that the child can quietly play with as they calm their emotions.
