15.01.2022 Today, I replaced a power point in a customer's home. A fairly straight forward job really. It is a requirement to always fully test such a change but IMHO, 95% of electricians do the most basic test (make sure there is power and maybe make sure it's wired right). I always do a full test including RCD (safety switch) test time. Today, the RCD did not trip!. After investigation (pretty obvious when there were no wires in the terminals... see pics), I found it was not even wire...d into the circuit! This is sad and dangerous given the owner of the house at the time (my customer only recently purchased the home), thought they were protected. Of course, I fixed this and advised the customer (I did not charge for repairing this... it's not my customer's fault that there are bad electricians out there). 15.01.2022 The problem... I took a call from a friend with an air conditioner that had been hit with a power surge. He was told the motherboard was damaged (see pics) and the board was no longer available. Replacement of the ac system...$8,000-$12,000. He asked me to take a look. I suggested I try replacing the damaged components. I did so and the system fired up perfectly! ... My friend was lucky! Dodged an electrical bullet ;-) I installed surge protection in the electrical switchboard to prevent it happening again. I'm posting this story now as as there have been other cases that had the same scenario. I had the same discussion with someone on the weekend. How to prevent this from happening to you...
