09.01.2022 VALE Rob Bowring OAM 9/4/47 27/2/21 Although we have said goodbye, the staff and volunteers of the Mannum Dock Museum of River History would now like to offic...ially say farewell to our Chairman, passionate advocate for Australia’s heritage vessels, Murray River history and a true River man! We were saddened to farewell long serving volunteer Chairman of the Mannum Dock Museum Rob Bowring OAM who passed away on Saturday 27 February 2021 after a long battle with cancer. Rob was instrumental in the restoration and re-commissioning of the PS Marion, the purchase/restoration of the PW Mayflower and has been the Chairman of the Mannum Dock Museum for the past 30 years. As member of many Boards and Committees, it was his work on the Australian Maritime Museums Council Board, Australian Register for Historic Vessels and Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s Safety Regional Council, that ensured the preservation and promotion of heritage vessels across Australia. As Chairman of the Mannum Dock Museum's Board, and a hands-on volunteer, he was the leader and an integral part of the workforce, that led to the development and ongoing transformation of the Museum and development of the Mannum Visitor Information Centre. It now has more than 25,000 visitors per year and is nationally recognised as the museum that best tells the story of the maritime history of the Murray and Darling rivers and of the paddle steamers that traded and travelled the lengths of both river systems. 22 boats gathered at Goolwa, SA, for a sail past on Sunday 28 February 2021 to pay tribute to Rob, is a clear indication of the esteem in which he was held by his fellow river men and women. At the conclusion of Rob’s funeral at the Mannum Dock Museum on Friday 05 March 2021, a sail past also occurred in Rob’s honour. It was clear that his passion and enthusiasm for the river, its people and boats, came from a deep understanding of the river as the fundamental heart and soul of the communities along it, giving the river people a unique identity. His endless and tireless devotion and passion to maritime history did not waiver until his last days. Our Nation and our Museum has lost a great river man who worked tirelessly for the past 30 years as a volunteer to preserve and promote inland water heritage vessels and history across Australia. Rob was a behind the scenes and selfless man and never wanted accolades for the endless contributions he made. Recently he fulfilled a lifelong dream and purchased a paddleboat the Miralie from Mildura, and cruised down the river to Mannum with his wife Mon, family and friends. As a tribute to Rob, Executive Officer, Deb Alexander OAM- recited the following poem at his funeral Mildura to Mannum Meander By Deb Alexander OAM The River tom toms are pounding Have you heard a river celebration is set No it’s just the Mildura to Mannum meander, no reason to gather a crowd I’ve heard the Adelaide is firing up And Echuca’s Pevensey and Etona are on their way, No, it’s just the Mildura to Mannum meander, no reason to gather a crowd It can’t be, the Melbourne is on the move and the Rothbury has already left The Ruby has departed the junction, and now they are nearing Lock 6 with the rest and their best No, it’s just the Mildura to Mannum meander, no reason to gather a crowd Can’t be something big as no water to get them down I heard someone made a phone call and the water is on the bound I am sorry it must be something big as there are now 80 boats in Chowilla town No, it’s just the Mildura to Mannum meander, no reason to gather a crowd Natty has the Industry ready and the Oscar has just crossed the Lake Something is happening, as the boats are creating a long-lasting wake No, it’s just the Mildura to Mannum meander, no reason to gather a crowd There are putt putts, classics and cruisers and the Canally has joined up, you have got it wrong People are saying don’t miss a mystery flotilla of 200 boats moving and everyone should join this throng No it’s just the Mildura to Mannum Meander no reason to gather a crowd Robert O’Callaghan is in the Barooga and Clive Sterling has shined up Qui-e-ti-tude so it will be the place to be It’s supposed to be the biggest boating congregation on the river and a once in a lifetime spectacle to see No, it’s just the Mildura to Mannum meander, no reason to gather a crowd Sorry I cannot agree, the tom toms are saying 400 boats on their way and I can hear paddle wheelers moving. Well if you can see them coming, listen quietly as the whistles will soon sing Do you know who is in the lead, is it E J on the Oscar or Marion’s Trevor B No, it’s the Miralie leading the pack but the Captain I cannot see It’s Rob Bowring and just the Mildura to Mannum meander and he is our River King! Our sincere condolences, and thoughts, are for Rob’s family and for all of you that worked with him and knew him. Although Rob is irreplaceable and we will all miss him terribly, the staff and volunteers at the Mannum Dock Museum/Visitor Information Centre, PS Marion and PW Mayflower will carry on Rob’s amazing legacy for the years to come!

04.01.2022 The PS Oscar W leaving Goolwa this morn!
