20.01.2022 A PIECE OF DENTAL HISTORY After studying Dentistry at University of Queensland, Eric Charlton accepted a position of Flying Dentist attached to the Cairns Base ...Hospital. This was a job he loved and enjoyed the adventures of visiting remote communities. In 1952, Eric set up a dentistry practice at 68 Norman Street in Gordonvale. In a letter to his father in 1952, Eric wrote I intend to start a practice in Gordonvale in a couple of months. It is a very good opening and I think I will do well. I had a chat with the manager of the NSW Bank at Gordonvale and he was very encouraging. I have a shop right in the main street of the town for only 2-5-0 a week. Eric’s wife, Janice assisted with the practice and it became a thriving concern. She had three roles- one as a receptionist; dental assistant; and dental mechanic, making the false teeth. When their twin daughters, Barbara and Sandra were born, the front part of their house at 22 Riverstone Road was converted to a dental surgery and the practice shifted there. Eric was very involved in the community through sport, North Queensland Society for Crippled Children, Civilian Widows, Red Cross and the Gordonvale Apex Club. He continued to practice dentistry to the 1990s and died in 1995 of a heart attack when playing squash. A number of items from his practice form part of a popular display in the Mulgrave Settlers Museum. Words by Sandra Charlton See more

17.01.2022 The time has come for us to put Kat & Tim's Pizzeria into 'hibernation'. We have made this very tough decision to close the shop until further notice to do our ...part in flattening the curve and stopping the spread of COVID-19. This will be our final week of trading, finishing up on SATURDAY the 4th of April at 9pm. Until then, we will still be providing awesome pizzas at an affordable price for both pickup and delivery. However, we will be running down our stock before closing on Saturday and as such some sides, desserts and drinks may become unavailable over the next few days. With a small child at home, Kat's father currently going through Chemo, elderly grandparents that need support and cases appearing closer to home, we feel now is the right time to close and protect those closest to us. We are sure that there are a majority of you that also have vulnerable loved ones to look after and protect, as well as yourselves. We want to put the health and well-being of our families, both personal and work, first and foremost over all else. When we have been given the all clear from Government and Health officials in regards to COVID-19, we will return and re-open with renewed vigour to satisfy the pizza cravings that will have been built up. We appreciate your ongoing support and understanding in these times and look forward to seeing you over the next few days and then again when we are able to open. For now, be safe. Kat & Tim & All Staff at the Pizzeria

15.01.2022 A great community event for everyone

14.01.2022 It's so important to be able to start the conversation about mental health. So many people suffer in silence because it's still seen as somewhat of a taboo topi...c. I think it's important for everyone to know that you're eligible for ten Medicare (partly) rebated visits to see a therapist. You make an extended doctors appointment to get a mental health plan referal from your GP. You might think your problems are silly or insignificant, but it's so important to address them before they become a bigger issue. So, R U OK?

12.01.2022 What a wonderful afternoon in Babinda to open the new Babinda Medical Centre. Congratulations to Fred and Carmel Lizzio, daughter Loretta and son in law Andrew ...Musumeci for their investment in our local community with their pharmacy, the new Babinda Family Doctors and QML Pathology all in the centre. Mayor Bob Manning and I were invited to cut the ribbons and say a few words. A big crowd turned out to support showing the strong community spirit that exists in the town and community of Babinda. #BabindaMedicalCentre #FredLizzio #LorettaMusumeci #AndrewMusumeci #JohnLizzio #CommunitySpiritInVolumes See more
