24.01.2022 Detail from Tina Havelock Stevens' 'The Rapids' 2019. In the middle of install week, and this is the vibe! Tina Havelock Stevens is a contemporary artist and drummer. 'The Rapids' 2019 is exhibited within 'Infinities', curated by Lauren Reid, as a two channel video with sound. Filling the space with the artist's confident percussion, it is impossible not to take note of time, rhythm and pulse, matched by the changing visual imagery, and the flow of water. As fluid as the body...'s movement. Image credit: Tina Havelock Stevens, 'The Rapids', 2019, two channel digital video installation, colour and black & white, 5.1 sound. 19:45 minutes. 23.01.2022 'I am become death, the destroyer of worlds', 2020. Markus Hoffmann's new work takes its title from the words that ran through the mind of American theoretical physicist Robert J. Oppenheimer as he watched the first detonation of a nuclear weapon on July 16, 1945. The line istelf is an English translation of a verse from a sacred Hindu text - the Bhagavad Gita, the original Sanskrit of which has been included in Hoffmann's installation. Hinduism has a non-linear concept of ti...me where the great god is both creator and destroyer. The word that is translated as 'death' can also be translated as 'time', making this work an examination of time as a destroyer, an active agent with propensity to alter, ruin, disrupt, nurture or destroy things. Catch it now amongst 'Infinities', curated by Lauren Reid, until 23 January. - Image credit: Markus Hoffmann, 'I am become death, the destroyer of worlds', 2020, Rainbow Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus Deglupta) seeds planted in soil exposed to radiation, dimensions variable, courtesy of the artist. 23.01.2022 Basin Magdy ‘is a collector, a storyteller, a researcher, a manipulator, a chemist and a philosopher’. Taken from his bio, Curator Lauren Reid loves this description of the artist that joins ‘Infinites’ from Basel and Cairo. His work ‘The Many Colours of the Sky Radiate Forgetfulness’ 2016 is a film that lures you in to the depths of ecological time. The accompanying subtitles are poetry. Get to Goulburn and see this work, because it’s no where else in Australia but here. Ba...sim’s films have been screened at the Tate Modern, Locarno Film Festival, New York film Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam and he is currently showing work in RESISTANT FACES @pinakothekdermoderne - #goulburnregionalartgallery #film #poetry #infinities #newshows #basimmagdy #rightnowingoulburn @basim.magdy @lauren.k.reid See more

21.01.2022 Step into Mel O'Callaghan's 'Centre of the Centre', 2019 and travel down to the deepest reaches of the ocean... The three-channel projected video features footage filmed around the deep-sea hydrothermal vents and seamounts of the East Pacific Rise. It is a world that few humans will ever visit, and only the most extreme of organisms flourish. Mel O'Callaghan's 'Centre of the Centre' is a touring exhibition with Museums and Galleries NSW. 21.01.2022 Ever laughed so hard your face hurt? ...What about for a whole hour? In 'The One Hour Laugh', the four members of Barbara Cleveland perform a routine of endurance laughter. Over the course of the hour, their laughter travels between tedium to strain, to genuine hilarity, to humiliation. Barbara Cleveland's unsettling laughter parodies the austerity of performance art documentation through overt theatricality and seemingly senseless enjoyment. On display until 14 November, ...swing by to see 'Thinking Business', and let us know if you've got the chops to laugh for sixty minutes straight... 21.01.2022 There is still time to catch John Hart's beautiful exhibition in Gallery 2. Nestled beside 'Infinities' - a show exploring human perception and understanding of time - John Hart's oil on paper studies of vacuum tubes are stunning portraits of older technology. Made with a masterful and sensitive hand, and a careful consideration of objects otherwise overlooked or forgotten in the history of amps, radios and the family telly, there's so much to love from time spent in this Gal...lery 2 show. 20.01.2022 IMAGINE AWARD WINNER - Sidney McMahon’s project ‘Of hope and longing’ has been awarded for Innovation and Resilience. Sid created an art club for queer young people, supported them to create an installation in Gallery 2 and developed their own major solo at the same time. Lockdown hit and their entire show was reformed to incorporate three performances live to Instagram. Sid called for images (remember Goulburn?!) and your submissions were the focus of those performances.... The artist showed a huge amount of tenacity, kindness and determination to see the project through. The Creepy Little Lemon Kids made the cover of @artcollectormagazine guide for public galleries earlier this year. Here’s an album of what Sid shared with us, at a time of uncertainty and when the world was hurting. Artists make the world a gentler place for us to live in. So let’s keep championing them! Museums & Galleries NSW do just that and we thank them for the award. 20.01.2022 Markus Hoffman’s new work graces the gallery as part of ‘Infinities’. All the way from Germany. Welcome to Goulburn Markus - #Repost @studiomarkushoffmann ... Now I am become death destroyer of worlds. Soil, irradiated rainbow eucalyptus seeds, ceramics, 2020. Thankful to be part of this great show. What a nice virtual opening -Infinities at Goulburn regional Art Gallery just opened. Have a look at the online opening with lovely introductions by Gina Mobayed and Lauren Reid. Infinities’ presents works that defy our human-scale conceptions of time: from the microbial-scale of bacterium inside our bodies, to the planetary-scale of the spinning of the Earth and beyond. Curated by Berlin-based curator, Lauren Reid, ‘Infinities’ brings artists and ideas from across the globe in to Goulburn for the very first time.Through an immersive combination of contemporary video works, sculptures, installations and new commissions, ‘Infinities’ provides an opportunity to step into different temporal methods of relating to the often imperceptible processes, environments, life forms and experiences around us. - #goulburnregionalartgallery @studiomarkushoffmann @lauren.k.reid See more

09.01.2022 'Infinities', curated by Lauren Reid, is now open Find amongst the show Hossein Valamanesh's breathtakingly beautiful sculpture and single channel digital video 'Passing Time', 2011. Created with the help of the artist's son, the work features the repeated action of the artist's thumbs and forefingers slowly moving and touching to form an infinity sign. It is significant that the artist's hands are aged, so that the passage of time is indicated by physical changes within t...he body. This individual perspective on mortality and the transience of existence is succinctly paired against the symbol of infinity, encompassing eternity and our pace within it. - Image credit: 'Passing Time', 2011, sculpture, single channel digital video, colour, sound. 05.01.2022 We had a little chat to Barbara Cleveland ahead of their opening next Friday - Tell us a little bit about yourselves and the collective that is Barbara Cleveland...... Barbara Cleveland is a collective of four artists Diana Baker Smith, Frances Barrett, Kate Blackmore and Kelly Doley. We met at art school in the early 2000s and our artistic practice and friendship have been closely intertwined ever since. We initially developed performances together, often in club contexts, as part of a larger network of artists living and working in Sydney. Over the last 15 years our work has focused on questions of artistic labour and authorship, often troubling the mythology of the singular artist-genius through forms of humour, collaboration and fiction. For instance, our early performances for the camera, such as The One Hour Laugh (2009) and Work in Progress (2010), present collective acts of endurance that draw on the history of conceptual art, absurdist theatre and experimental comedy. Whereas in our most recent video work, This is a stained glass window (2019), we turn the camera on our intimate working relationship to explore themes of female friendship, collaboration and artistic labour. - ‘Work in Progess: From Dawn to Dusk’, 2010 single channel HD video, 8:51 mins - #goulburnregionalartgallery #barbaracleveland #performance #video #contemporaryart #friendship #collaboration #hardyakka #openings #rightnowingoulburn @barbara__cleveland

04.01.2022 Barbara Cleveland, 'Work in Progress: Dawn till Dusk', 2010. In an endurance work of performative group work, the four members of Barbara Cleveland take turns to hammer a wooden post into the ground with a mallet. Dressed in blue overalls and white t-shirts, the women continue their task silently in a paddock from 6am until 10pm. The tacit collaboration of the team and the calm endurance speaks of women's work, commonality, physicality and persistence. With an underlying humo...ur, 'Dawn till Dusk' references performance art and its intertwined history with feminist art of the 1960s and 70s. - While it was certainly not silent, yesterday's session of 'Moving to Performance' with Pauline Mullen featured our Art Teenies having a ball with an endurance activity - wrapping the council courtyard in fabric! This was followed by the additional performance of re-wrapping the fabric. We had the great pleasure of hosting workshops on Cultural Mediation - a way to form relationships of mutual exchange between the visitor, the artists, the works and the space. Encouraging visitor inquiry through conversations that promote critical thinking about art means that art is absolutely for everyone. Amidst Mel O'Callaghan's solo exhibition 'Centre of the Ce...ntre', it was like getting to meet the work all over again. With talks by Eliza Wells on the psychology of the visitor experience, and Alexandra Pedley's studies on altered states of consciousness, the neurons were truly flowing. 01.01.2022 Take a little moment in 'Infinities' to appreciate the smallness and specific organic journies in the indefatigable universe... It might be a teenie screen, but Jenna Sutela's 'Holobiont', 2018 really packs a punch.
