12.01.2022 This beautiful little pony Queenie presented to us last week for diagnosis and then surgery to remove a very large ovarian tumor that was found upon abdominal... ultrasound. Some mares like this one may be lucky enough to show minimal or no outward symptoms. However, one of the most common symptoms we hear from owners with mares suffering from ovarian tumors, is that they have become aggressive and exhibit almost stallion-like behavior, due to hormonal imbalances. These mares may herd and drive other horses or show noticeable aggression and bite or kick other paddock mates that they had previously gotten along well with. Occasionally, that aggression may extend to humans. In performance horses these mares can appear uncomfortable or irritable when performing, in which they are usually responding to the pull of the tumor on the ovarian ligaments. Diagnosis is usually done by performing an ultrasound of the horses reproductive tract to examine the ovaries and in particular their size. Treatment is performed by doing an ovariectomy which means to surgically remove the affected ovary. Following surgery most mares will revert back to normal reproductive function, cycling every 21 days and have the ability to still fall pregnant and successfully carry foals. The tumor pictured here, that was removed from this little mare by Dr Steve Rayner and the team weighed a massive 25kg! Queenie is still recovering in hospital with us from her massive surgery and hopefully will be comfortable enough to return home to her family in the coming days.
