25.01.2022 Condensation is a big issue for new homes in Tasmania. However, it doesnt have to be! A training session was held during the week for Designers to attend and discuss ways we can avoid this problem. 25.01.2022 We are a TasFire accredited Bushfire Hazard Practitioner so get in contact if you need a report for your Building project! The report and associated management plan are required as part of the documentation for building approval. 19.01.2022 Heres a good graphic that helps explain the different levels of bushfire attack as determined in a Bushfire Hazard Report! ~ The number or rating (12.5, 19 etc) given in the assessment is a reflection of how much radiant heat the Building could be exposed to in the event of a Bushfire and this determines the construction requirements ~ The construction requirements for most ratings are designed to deal with ember attack, not direct contact with the fire itself!... ~ This is appropriate as the vast majority of homes lost in Bushfires are the resulting effects of windbourne debris. Sometimes several kms from the actual fire front! There seems to be a lot of false and misleading information spread regarding building for bushfire requirements so always talk to an expert! 14.01.2022 What are eaves for? I think this image from a recent project helps to demonstrate the practical value of eaves when used correctly... ~ These 3D views have been modelled showing shadows, one in the middle of summer at the hottest part of the day and also in the middle of winter at the same time. ~ During Summer the windows are shaded and this helps keep the intense sunlight out. While in Winter the sunlight is flooding in, helping heat the home.... ~ So eaves v no-eaves is more than just an aesthetic preference. Window placement in an eave-less design becomes critical. 01.01.2022 This is a recent project I did to demonstrate how easily an energy efficient, high performing home can be built on a very modest budget. ~ This design doesnt incorporate any fancy external energy saving features, just clever design and simple construction, to achieve a minimum 8.5 star NatHERS test result for a Tasmanian climate zone. (Current standard is 6 star) ~ This home would use approx. 1/10th the energy usage of the average Australian home.
