17.01.2022 This week is international sustainable seafood week! And at Bombora Foods we are very pleased to say that we are part of a globally recognised sustainable fishe...ry. The WA Octopus Fishery has achieved MSC sustainability (more on that later) BUT - what nuts and bolts really make a fishery sustainable? There's actually a bunch of things that can go into being sustainable, so over the next few days we will run through a few bits about what makes us unique. And number one is no surprise for anyone living on the south coast! The weather. Four seasons in one day can be enough to keep the fishermen away, particularly in a region with rolling swells and vast distances between shelter or to port. Just take a look at this year, super strong summer easterlies mean less fishing days, disrupting local supplies. In the winter those strong southerly and SW blows produced by lows peeling off the polar air can mean weeks of little or no fishing. Even if there's a workable day here or there, the distances that our boats have to travel mean that a weather window of 24 hours is often too small to be able to go out and back safely. Rough weather stirs up water, stops fish from usual movements and hinders retrieval of most gear. But it also acts as a nurturing force, redistributing biomass, assisting upwelling and dispersal of young, flushes estuaries refreshes embayments. It also gives stocks a rest and acts as a natural force for sustainability. So, as much as we aggrieve it, as fishermen we also appreciate that weather as well. See more
