24.01.2022 An overview and discussion of findings of the 2020 Australian Native Seed Sector Report Here is a presentation by Dr Paul Gibson-Roy for the Society For Ecological Restoration. If you are interested in the state of the Australian Native Seed Sector, this report explains information gathered from a survey done a few years ago. The findings are very interesting. https://www.ser.org//Open-Access-An-overview-and-discussio

24.01.2022 Yesterday morning was very cold at the seed production area and the frost was the best we have seen there yet. Here are some pics to show you what I mean.

22.01.2022 It's at about this time of the year that I start to dream of the upcoming spring and the wildflowers that are yet to bloom. The rainfall so far this season has been good so let's hope for a spring full of flowers! To help brighten our spirits through the latest lockdown I'll be posting some pics over coming weeks of what is just around the corner, and hopefully soon we will again be free to explore our favourite wild places.

15.01.2022 A couple of weeks ago we sowed a batter on the Deer Park Bypass. It was a small job and was done by hand by Matt, Nicole and Michael. Well done guys!

14.01.2022 After 3 weeks of lockdown we find we have 6 more to go! I hope I have enough pics to help relieve the tedium of being confined to our homes for so long. I decided to concentrate on one of my favourite wildflowers this week, Spider Orchids. Many years ago when I became interested in wildflowers I was determined to see a real Spider Orchid. I would look at my field guides and books of Victorian orchids and marvel at the detail and colours of these beautiful wildflowers, and one... Spring I drove out to the Grampians in search of them. I stopped at the information office at Halls Gap and asked a nice elderly lady behind the counter where I might find Spider Orchids, and she directed me to a wonderful place outside the Grampians. I have visited this site nearly every year since. Over the years I have found Spider Orchids in many other places, and even discovered a new species that has sadly become extinct. This reminds us of how rare and special many of our native orchids are, and when you see Spider Orchids in the bush it usually means you are in good undisturbed habitat as they are one of the first species to disappear. Here are some of my Spider Orchid photos. Some of these plants are extremely rare, and although I know the names of some of them I'm not confident enough to name them all. Spider Orchid identification is something best left to the experts.

14.01.2022 How such an incredible opportunity can become a sad and sorry mess. https://www.theage.com.au//state-faces-hundreds-of-million

13.01.2022 I managed to break away from Melbourne iso yesterday to travel to Woorndoo (legitimately, working as a WLPG volunteer). The 2019 restoration (sown last October)... is establishing well, with plenty of Wallaby Grass and a good smattering of forbs (some flowering). Too much weed for my liking, but mainly agricultural annual weed that should settle down over the next few years under competition from our sown native perennials. I'm looking froward to seeing how the whole, newly-sown area looks in the coming spring and summer. The 2013 restoration was burnt a few weeks ago and is greening up well. The seed production area at Chatsworth is looking great, particularly with the newly-planted beds funded by a Landcare grant from Glenelg-Hopkins CMA. See more

10.01.2022 Here's some more pics from past visits to the Grampians National Park.

07.01.2022 Three months after sowing the 14 hectare scalped site and it is slowly germinating. As the days get longer and warmer this site will be a lot greener in a couple of months. If Spring rainfall is as good as predicted this project will look fantastic by the end of this year. #14hascalp

06.01.2022 A couple of weeks ago we sowed a small area with wildflowers and native grasses for Sally Dawe, the Open Space Contracts Officer at The City of Greater Dandenong. This is a test plot to help demonstrate the virtues of direct seeding a flowering meadow compared to planting, including its longer-term viability. Sally found what we believe is a suitable site that could be sown straight away as it is getting late in the season. We will be keeping a close eye on this one. We would like to thank Sally for driving this little project, and Greater Dandenong for supporting it. We have all seen the wonderful wildflowers sown along roadsides and public spaces in Britain and North America, hopefully Sally has helped start a similar trend here in Melbourne!

06.01.2022 We recently reached 2000 likes for this page and we would like to thank each and every one of you for your support over the past 3 and a half years, whether you make regular comments, share our posts or just have a look to see what we're up to. To celebrate I'm adding some of my favourite pics of our achievements, some beautiful flowering grassland remnants, Australian flowering landscapes and other Flora Vic memories.

05.01.2022 We recently started work on a large project for Ecology and Heritage Partners to create habitat for the endangered Golden Sun Moth. 14 hectares has been scalped and we are now in the process of sowing Wallaby and Spear grasses. It is good to know we have the capability to create habitat that is becoming increasingly hard to find. #14hascalp

05.01.2022 Tristan and Rowan sowing the 14 hectare Golden Sun Moth site for @Ecology and Heritage Partners. Weather permitting it will be finished this week.

04.01.2022 Here's an update on the wildflower sowing for Sally Dawe at The City of greater Dandenong. This latest photo was taken almost exactly a month after sowing and you can see lots of plants, mainly wildflowers germinating under a film of water as it was raining at the time. The germinants are tiny and were only visible while on our hands and knees. We'll be heading back in another month and will post another update.

04.01.2022 A wonderful segment on Gardening Australia about the Evans St Grassland managed by Hume City Council with Ian Spiteri. Great job Ian! https://www.abc.net.au//fact/guarding-grasslands/12298092

03.01.2022 In the hope of spreading some cheer during the boredom of lockdown, here is another post full of photos of wildflowers taken here in Victoria. This week we are still in the forests around Castlemaine.

01.01.2022 Here are the third weekly lot of wildflower pics to help brighten up lockdown. This will probably be the last photos from the forests near Castlemaine, then we'll move on to somewhere else :)

01.01.2022 Now we're off on a virtual trip to the Grampians National Park to look at some more wildflowers. Let's hope we're allowed to go there this Spring!
