21.01.2022 A magazine feature from a few years ago.

21.01.2022 I've only been posting old photos lately and thought it was time to go out and shoot some new material. So yesterday (Sunday) I had reason to drive up to the Lowmead area and decided to take a camera with me and see what I could find after my business was done. Over a period of 2 hours I took about 15 photos, 9 of them are posted here. All OK I think and a couple I really like. The rain helped by saturating colours as well. Three of these are multi-frame stitches on a 16Mpx ...camera, one of those resulted in a 77Mpx file, the others around 45Mpx, who needs an $8000 Fuji or Canon? :D EDIT: Oops, uploaded lo-res pics. All hi-res now.

20.01.2022 I've just been alerted to this landscape photography competition. https://naturallandscapeawards.com/ I long ago stopped entering in competitions but this one seems like it might be worth a go because the playing field is a bit more traditional, meaning that the emphasis is on field skills actually getting good images in camera not Photoshop skills.... In reading their criteria it reminded me of an article I wrote for Better Digital magazine a few years ago. http://www.robgray.com/writing/essays/manipulation/index.php It's probably too heavy going for most people here but some might find it interesting.

19.01.2022 Something different today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCIFOtSJTLc

19.01.2022 I just found a caricature of me leaning on my 5x4 camera that was drawn of me back in the 90s. What a handsome fellow I was. I've still got the hat and the camera...and the hairy legs for that matter. My face is hairier now though.

18.01.2022 Insect tracks on sand, near Yulara, NT, Australia. I never really enter competitions but this one got runner up in the Interpretive photography category, 2006 ANZANG nature photographer of the year.

18.01.2022 Friday's Folio Foto :: The old chancery house in downtown Perth, reflected in a modern glass-faced building.

17.01.2022 Wednesday's Wonderful Wildlife :: Corellas on tree Old Government waterhole, nr Karratha, WA, Australia Corellas are a close relative of the Galah, and their antics are just as humorous.

16.01.2022 Here's another nice old building that's been "cleaned up", the Masonic Lodge in Childers. Not a lot to do on this one and unlike the previous building I think I prefer the colour version this time. One thing to note is the importance (IMO) of having a vehicle that allows easy access to the roof because being 2 meters higher usually gives you a vastly improved perspective.

15.01.2022 We're pretty much out of lockdown now so maybe I should have posted this a few months ago. No matter, macro photography is a great pursuit and it doesn't require you to travel much, or at all. This article was published by the (now defunct I think) Digital Photography and Design magazine a few years ago. http://www.robgray.com/writing/tutorials/backyard-safari.pdf

14.01.2022 Friday's Folio Foto :: Sacre-Coeur over rooftops, Paris, France.

10.01.2022 Friday's Folio Foto :: One of my favourite spots in Kosciuszko, the Ramshead Range.

09.01.2022 Wednesday's Wonderful Wildlife :: Sea Lion, Jurien, WA This sea lion was trying (and often succeeding) to steal fish from the fishermen's lines below the Jurien jetty. When a fish was hooked it was a race to see who actually lands it, the fisherman or the sea lion. It seems that the animal has got a little enthusiastic on occasion as it has some ganged hooks and portion of line trailing from it's mouth.... It doesn't seem to slow it down any so I hope it wasn't a long term problem. In between stealing fish the sea lion posed for my camera. They really seem to be fun-loving animals and this one swam around in circles first giving me a left profile, then a right. Every now and then it seemed to nod off, with eyes closed and head and tail sinking below water level, held up by a fat-laden middle.

07.01.2022 I was out and about on Saturday, not specifically a photo trip but I had some cameras with me and got a couple of shots. I also decided to tinker with B&W for the first time in ages as well.

05.01.2022 Friday's Folio Foto :: A pearly king in Trafalgar Sq, London. I always liked the dead pan stare, only a 100mm lens so I was pretty close, maybe he just wasn't impressed. One reason I don't do much/any street photography, too many people :D
