25.01.2022 The annual Great Adventures Green Island Ocean Swim is back! Set to make a splash on Sunday, October 18th, with competitors taking on 500m, 1.5km and 3km distance swims. This unique Great Barrier Reef competition takes place on the sheltered side of Green Island, with each leg of the event offering a variety of conditions for competitors; from shallows to wind chop and tidal flow. If you’re lucky, a green sea turtle or two might join in the fun! In 2020, pre-registration an...d pre-payment are essential as swim numbers are limited in keeping with COVID-19 regulations. 24.01.2022 When you live and work in one of the most remarkable natural environments on the planet, it’s only natural (see what we did there?) to protect it! Our conservation and stewardship activities are on steroids over the next few months as we engage in a very significant initiative made possible by funding through the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority as part of the Australian Government’s COVID Recovery and Relief Fund. Our expert teams of marine biologists and divers wil...l be visiting up to 78 of the Quicksilver Group’s major tourism and remote reef sites. In addition to Reef Health Impact and Eye on the Reef monitoring surveys, we’re also ‘hunting’ for any coral predators such as the Crown of Thorns Starfish and Drupella snails, and removing them from the reef where we find any. This important work will support and help improve reef resilience and data collected will in turn help make important management decisions within the marine park. Our ‘New York’ dive and snorkel site offshore from Green Island is a great reef, and it’s now a vital part of a leading edge, multi-stakeholder scientific research project. Thousands of coral fragments attached to a web of hexagonal frame stars has been installed around New York to form a new underwater structure on the seafloor. The observation of how the coral grows over the next several years will help inform scientific under...standing and help improve reef restoration resilience tools and techniques. Over the next three years, the live coral fragments will continue to grow and form a diverse and healthy live reef in an area previously covered with coral rubble and bare limestone rock. 06.01.2022 Yesterday, Great Adventures and Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre travelled to Green Island to release Cronulla, a wayward baby Flatback Sea Turtle. Cronulla was found on a New South Wales beach several months ago and has spent time recuperating at Taronga Zoo. After receiving permits and a microchip, a first-class flight with Qantas and completing quarantine, Cronulla was ready for release! After a textbook release, Cronulla was on his way to explore Green Island and i...ts surrounds!
