21.01.2022 Combatting biodiversity threats Introduced, or ‘pest species’ like goats and weeds compete with native species on Reef islands. So, how do we combat these threats? By removing pests to supporting recovery of these amazing Reef islands. One success story is St Bees Island, a continental island offshore from Mackay, where Queensland National Parks initiated an eradication program back in 2008. Using a variety of detection and targeting techniques, including ‘Judas’ goats... fitted with GPS tracking collars to locate and bond with herds, an estimated 2000 feral goats have been eradicated from the island, including the last Judas goats in May 2020. St Bees Island is officially goat free. Read more about biodiversity in Outlook Report 2019: https://bit.ly/33qRiBL Queensland National Parks St Bees Island #NationalBiodiversityMonth See more
