The main reasons for amputation are diabetes, vascular disease, traumatic accidents, infections and cancer. The walk brings our community together to take a stand against family violence. During our inaugural walk activist Phil Cleary spoke about his own personal experience with family violence. Sadly his story is not as uncommon as we think, but by having open conversations we can bring the issue out into the light and start to make effective change. All on-street parking fees in central Dandenong will be waived until 31 December 2020. 17.01.2022 Council will next week launch a Business Grants Program offering grants of up to $5000 to help local businesses doing it tough. The grants will be geared at helping small to medium businesses retain current employees or support business sustainability through the COVID-19 pandemic. Current free parking provisions in Lonsdale Street, Dandenong have been extended for a further 12 months. 16.01.2022 Find the Kind Friday. This month Council launched an advocacy campaign with 12 other local councils calling for more support services for the homeless. Our key objective is to help put a roof over the heads of some of our most vulnerable people. Homelessness is a complex issue and as such requires a multi-layered approach. This campaign is calling for more social housing and better support for those facing homelessness. While the 13 councils involved in this campaign will continue to lobby state and federal governments for policy change, we can all play a role in supporting people who are often at their lowest point. 08.01.2022 Drowning is the most common cause of preventable death for young children, and in Victoria, most fatal drownings of young children occur in home swimming pools. Pool safety barriers help save lives. That’s why new laws require owners to register their pools and spas with Council by 1 November 2020. 06.01.2022 Meet Annalise and Nakiya, two friends from playgroup. As part of #NAIDOC2020 their families have shared what NAIDOC means to them. Nakiya is a proud Yorta Yorta, Latji Latji and Mauritian girl. For Nakiya and her family NAIDOC is about celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures with the wider community, and is a time to teach other kids about their culture. Kayla Goder, Nakiya’s mother, explains that schools’ cultural plans for Aboriginal and Torres Strait ...Islander children are important for each child’s connection to culture and wider reconciliation. Annalise is a proud Narungga, Wemba Wemba and Yorta Yorta girl. Her family are local and deeply connected to their culture and community and have a long tradition of participating in the NAIDOC march. The march signifies their commitment to strong culture, strong families and strong identity. NAIDOC is a time for all to come together to celebrate the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. To assist residents with sorting their food waste, Council is providing a limited number of free kitchen caddies only for households who currently have a garden waste service. 02.01.2022 The Drum Theatre will be lit in the colours of the Mauritian flag (red, blue, yellow and green) from 14 to 20 September to mark the ecological disaster from the... grounding of MV Wakashio on 25 July on the reef of Pointe DEsny on the East coast of Mauritius. This led to a disastrous oil spill (at least 1,000 tonnes of oil and diesel) into one of the islands most protected areas containing endangered species known only to that area. Images and information of the news event show the extent of the disaster and the local efforts.
