25.01.2022 .. , , , ... , , . , , . , , , , , , . , . , . . . " " . . . . With deepest sorrow and pain of soul, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, together with the God-loving Bishops of Australia, all the clergy, the monastic brotherhoods and the hundreds of thousands of Orthodox Christian faithful in the Fifth Continent and all of Oceania learned of the unnecessary decision, by the President of Turkey, Mr Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to convert Hagia Sophia into an Islamic Temple. Unfortunately, certain decisions, while for some may seem courageous, in reality represent small-mindedness, resentment, intolerance and religious fanaticism. It is for this reason that they are recorded in history with dark letters. This decision is unjust primarily for the people of Turkey and their future, but it also proves disrespectful to the memory of the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Kemal Ataturk. This decision constitutes sacrilege to a monument of world cultural heritage, which represents, at the same time, a global symbol of the Orthodox Church and Christianity. Hagia Sophia belongs to the whole world. For us Orthodox Christians, Hagia Sophia will continue to be an eternal symbol. We continue to sing, To you, my Champion and Commander and spiritually make our pilgrimage to Hagia Sophia. We close our eyes and feel the first dome of human history covering the entire universe. No one can erase the truth and historical reality. We pray and believe that injustice will soon be restored before history and humanity. From the Holy Archdiocese of Australia

17.01.2022 MESSAGE FROM ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS OF AUSTRALIA Chora Monastery conversion I was deeply saddened to learn of the decision of the Turkish authorities to convert t...he historic Chora Monastery in Constantinople into an Islamic mosque. It is a decision that intensifies our frustration and concern, given the recent desecration of the Church of Hagia Sophia, which is the universal symbol of Orthodoxy and Christianity. Unfortunately, the Turkish political leadership insists on following a path of disrespect for religious monuments of the Orthodox Church but also displays contempt for monuments that constitute a part of the world’s cultural heritage. There are currently more than 3500 mosques in Constantinople. There is no need for another one to be added to the list as most of them are empty. Unfortunately, Turkey is moving in the opposite direction from what all modern democracies and societies have set out to do in recent years. At the same time, it invalidates all actions and steps taken in previous decades by the Turkish Republic and the Turkish people, choosing to go backwards instead of progressing and showing disrespect even for its own history. However, we must realise that such decisions not only constitute an insult to Orthodox Christians or, generally, to Christians around the world. We must understand that such heroic initiatives promote intolerance, religious fanaticism and nationalist ideology while, at the same time, undermining peaceful coexistence, which is a pursuit of all religions. It is crucial to ponder particularly by those who instigate and execute such decisions that no present intervention can change the historic reality reflected in a monument. It can only determine the future. And this is why the responsibility that comes from such decisions is heavy-laden.

12.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? One of the main tourist attractions of Coober Pedy in South Australia is the Saint Ilia Orthodox Church. The whole church complex, with a church, ...a community hall, a parish house and a religious school, is carved in the sandstone between 3 and 17 meters under the ground level. The church was built by Serbian Australians who settled in Coober Pedy as opal miners. Because of the hot climate, it was decided to build a church under the ground. The digging of the community hall begun in June 1992, and was finished in a month. The digging of the church itself began in February 1993, and was finished in August 1993, and consecrated on St Ilia's day All work was done by the volunteers. The church is 30 metres long, 5.3 metres wide, and 7 metres high, and is completely carved in the sandstone. The ceiling window is covered with stained glass. The floor is 17 metres under the ground level in the deepest point, and 3 metres under the ground level at the shallowest point. The church has a gallery with a baptismal font and the altar. The iconostasis is made of glass. The interior walls are covered with bas reliefs of saints carved in stone. Definitely worth a post COVID visit.

10.01.2022 In our second episode of Truth Seekers, Max joins His Grace Bishop Emilianos of Meloa to explore the question, 'What do we say to those claiming that Christiani...ty is a way of controlling people? Is it?' Here’s what is covered in this discussion: Christ sets the ultimate example of love and freedom. What about spiritual fathers who use fear and guilt to control people? If God is freedom, then why does He give us guidelines to follow? These questions were anonymously sent in by young Orthodox Christians. Want more content? Head over to cycnsw.org.au

01.01.2022 SAINTS SERGIUS AND BACCHUS Today our Church commemorates the above two solder saints. Saints Sergius and Bacchus were Roman citizens and high-ranking officers o...f the Roman army, but their covert Christianity was discovered when they attempted to avoid accompanying a Roman official into a pagan temple with the rest of his bodyguard. After they persisted in refusing to sacrifice to Jupiter in Galerius' company, they were publicly humiliated by being chained, dressed in female attire and paraded around town. Galerius then sent them to Barbalissos in Mesopotamia to be tried by Antiochus, the military commander there and an old friend of Sergius. Antiochus could not convince them to give up their faith, however, and Bacchus was beaten to death. The next day Bacchus' spirit appeared to Sergius and encouraged him to remain strong so they could be together forever. Over the next days, Sergius was also brutally tortured and finally executed at Resafa, where his death was marked by miraculous happenings. Apolytikion of Martyrs Sergius and Bacchus Fourth Tone Thy Martyrs, O Lord, in their courageous contest for Thee received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since they possessed Thy strength, they cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by their prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful. Kontakion of Martyrs Sergius and Bacchus Third Tone As we gather, let us crown with sacred hymns of laudation those two brethren in the Faith, the great and valorous martyrs: Sergius was the Triune Godhead's most steadfast warrior; and with him, wise Bacchus manfully suffered torments; and they both confessed Christ Saviour as God, the Maker and sacred Trainer of all.
