25.01.2022 This weekend was Clean Up Australia Day - we'd like to send a big shout out to everyone who got involved and cleaned up their local area! It's great to see so many people taking time out to clean up rubbish - and hopefully as we become more mindful of how much rubbish ends up in our environment, we can prevent it from getting there in the first place! There are heaps of things each one of us can do to reduce how much waste ends up in landfill or out in the environment.... We can avoid single use disposable products as much as possible and look for reusable alternatives We can look for items that are biodegradable or recyclable We can look for products with no or very little packaging We can make sure we only buy what we really need and reduce how much excess we throw away Each of these will make a difference and reduce our on footprint on the planet. And help to keep our unique environment clean and healthy and there for us to enjoy. Keep up the great work in taking care of our big backyard!! #avoidreducereuse #waronwaste #sustainableliving #greenbandicoot

20.01.2022 A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to take a few days off for a short getaway. Very grateful to be able to with COVID-19 still a big issue. I ticked a long-awaited adventure off my bucket list diving with the giant cuttlefish at Whyalla. WOW nature is amazing! These creatures are so fascinating, they change colours, shape and texture, and can camouflage amazingly well. They flock to the coast just off Whyalla to breed and it’s a unique experience just a few metres out fro...m the shore. We are so lucky to have such amazing places to visit where we can see nature at its best and right on our doorstep. It reminded me how important it is to look after our natural places. Especially our marine environments while we normally can’t see what goes on under the surface, there’s a whole other world under the waves! If you get a chance to get out and about, whether just for a day trip or a few days getaway, now is a great time to not only get back to nature but to also support local businesses that are doing it tough. We may not be able to go far right now, but there is so much to see in our own backyard. What natural places are on your bucket list? We would love to hear! #avoidreducereuse #sustainabilityrocks #naturalwonders #buylocal #greenbandicootstyling

19.01.2022 The days are flying by and I can't believe it's nearly Christmas! Preparations are in full swing and it's a good time to consider how we can make it an environmentally friendly Christmas. Christmas often creates a crazy amount of waste - wrapping paper, left over food that gets thrown away, and maybe even some unwanted presents!... There are lots of different ways to reduce our impact on the environment at this time of year, here are just a few: When it comes to wrapping presents - try reusable options, like a tea towel, a beeswax wrap, or even just a nice piece of fabric. For the kids, a pillow case is a practical option! This will definitely help reduce the amount of wrapping paper that ends up in the bin. If you are given gift bags or wrapped presents this year - why not keep what is in good condition to use for next year. I have a collection that I've been given saved up ready to go, my family won't be surprised to get a second hand gift bag!! At this time of year it is timely to think about families who might be struggling and unable to afford essentials let alone gifts. If your family and friends don't really need for anything, you could suggest donating to a charity that assists those in need. Instead of struggling to find gifts for 'the person that has everything', and the gift perhaps being appreciated but unwanted, your dollars can make a big difference to someone doing it tough. It is a time for over-indulgence and many dining tables will be over flowing with food I'm sure. To avoid food waste, send leftovers home with your guests. This will spread the leftovers around, reduce the chance of them going to waste, and who doesn't love eating cold meat and salads for a few days in a row!!! (or is it just me?! ) If you do like to give presents, then it's a good chance to buy local handmade gifts. There are many businesses out there selling eco-friendly products, like natural bath and body products, plants in cute pots, scrunchies, and much more. If you have the time and really want a personal touch you could make your own gifts - there are lots of DIY recipes out there for all sorts of natural products, and baked goods always go down well too! A gift made with love is a great way to go. If you have other tips for an eco-friendly Christmas we would love to hear them! And the main thing is to enjoy time with your family and friends as that is what really counts #avoidreducereuse #waronwaste #sustainableliving #greenbandicoot

16.01.2022 Do you know what happens to your soft plastic when you drop it into Redcycle bins at your local supermarket? There are companies in Australia that are doing great things by recycling all that soft plastic and turning it into new products. This means the new products have all the benefits of plastic, like being durable and long-lasting, but they are made in a much more sustainable way by avoiding raw materials and keeping plastic out of landfill. ... Companies like Replas turn plastic waste into products like decking, bollards, fencing and outdoor furniture for parks and gardens. You might have seen some of this outdoor furniture at your local park or playground. It’s great to see all that plastic waste going back into new products, because there is plenty of it! This makes a big difference in protecting our environment Avoiding and reducing waste is always best, but we can also look for products that are made from recycled materials. Whether it be packaging or the item itself companies using recycled materials are reducing their impact and looking to be more sustainable and we can support them when we make our purchasing decisions. Our support of products made from recycled materials also means that what would have been waste stays out of landfill. Keep an eye out for products made from recycled materials and keep recycling what you can it is making a difference! #avoidreducereuserecycle #waronwaste #sustainableliving #greenbandicoot

12.01.2022 The weekend is getting started and we are looking forward to the Fullarton Markets tomorrow morning If you feel like a morning out and about, rug up and head on down! It is looking like the clouds will clear just in time for the market We'll be there with our range of reusable and recycled products to help reduce waste and tread more lightly on the environment. ... There will be heaps of other great stalls, lots of plants, hot coffee and live entertainment too See you at the Fullarton Park Community Centre from 9am until 1pm tomorrow :-) #avoidreducereuse #waronwaste #sustainabilityrocks #greenbandicootstyling

11.01.2022 How exciting is it to grow your own fruit and vegetables! You don't even need much room - my lemon and lime trees are in pots and they are bursting with young fruit. I can't wait to see them grow and turn into fruit ready to pick ... I will be happy to end up with two or three (low expectations, just in case!), but if I get twenty all at once - no problem! There are heaps of ways to make sure they don't go to waste: Chop up the lemons and limes into segments and freeze them - they'll keep until you are ready to use them (great in drinks!). Juice the fruit and freeze in ice cube trays. This is great for recipes that need lemon or lime juice. Lemon curd! Yum! Make lemon or lime jam - similar to marmalade but not as bitter. If you are completely overloaded - give them to friends and family. They will love your home grown efforts!! Now to sit back and wait for them to grow and ripen..... What do you have growing in your backyard? Are you as excited as me to see things grow?!?! #avoidreducereuse #homegrownproduce #sustainabilityrocks #greenbandicootstyling

10.01.2022 Spring really feels like it has sprung! Everything feels fresh and new and it has inspired me to have a spring clean! (I must have too much spare time ) It’s a great chance to de-clutter and be really mindful about ... what you have in your home. I found heaps of things that I really don’t need, they don’t get used and just take up room, so it’s time for them to go! If you feel the same, have a good clean out and say goodbye to things that you just don’t need. For items that are in good or great condition, there's no need for them to go to waste! There are heaps of buy-swap-sell pages, or your area might have a 'Buy Nothing' group where items are given away (have a look via Facebook search). Or an easy and satisfying option is to donate items to an op-shop. Someone is bound to snap up your unwanted items and the sale price goes to a good cause. It’s easy to then buy too much and end up in the same position again. To prevent this from happening and to reduce our impact on the environment here are some eco-friendly tips: Think about whether you really need more stuff. Like Marie Kondo says will it bring you joy? If there is something you need, can you get it second hand? Is it something you could borrow and then return? If you need to buy new, what is the item made of? Is it from sustainable sources? What will happen to it when you no longer need it? Can it be recycled? Is it something that will last and last, or is it something that will wear out and date, meaning you’ll be looking to replace it sooner rather than later? Making mindful choices about what you bring into your home can keep your home uncluttered and also help the environment. Good luck with your spring cleaning! #avoidreducereuse #waronwaste #sustainabilityrocks #greenbandicootstyling

10.01.2022 It’s great to see more and more companies making products out of recycled materials. Clothes, shoes, shopping bags, homewares so many items are starting to be made from what would have ended up in landfill. I love seeing the innovation! Our support is really important - we can build demand for products made from recycled materials and encourage even more companies to get on board with being more sustainable.... A great resource if you would like to find companies to support is on the Clean Up Australia website. They have a range of collections showcasing products made from recycled materials and using recycled packaging. Check out their website to find out about some of the companies you can support. We’ll share some of the companies and products we are loving too, over the next week or so. Another great way we can help to make positive changes for our environment #avoidreducereuserecycle #waronwaste #sustainableliving #greenbandicoot

10.01.2022 Earlier in the week we shared a link to The Minimalists website we love the concept of living with less stuff because it is a pathway to being happier and is a big positive for the environment. We thought we’d share some questions that The Minimalists encourage you to ask yourself before buying something. It is a great reminder to check in about whether you should make that purchase, or not.... 5 question’s to ask before buying: Can I afford to part with this money? If you need to put it on a credit card, then perhaps you can’t afford it. Can I pay the actual cost? The true cost of a thing goes beyond the price on the price tag. Will it add value to my life? It must serve a purpose or bring joy, otherwise it does not add value. What are the alternatives? Is this the best use of this money? Would it be better spend elsewhere? Can I get by without it for a while? If so, wait. Maybe you will realise you no longer want the thing you wanted. Of course when your washing machine breaks this checklist doesn’t really apply. But with other non-essential purchases, it is a good rule of thumb to run through these questions. We hope it helps to keep your life less cluttered! #avoidreducereuse #waronwaste #sustainableliving #greenbandicoot #minimalism

10.01.2022 Something lighthearted for a Monday

09.01.2022 Have you seen the Minimalists recent documentary ‘Less is Now’? We watched this over the summer holidays and it reminded us to put less emphasis on ‘stuff’ and more emphasis on ‘simplicity’. With marketing everywhere we look encouraging us to buy more and more, it is harder and harder to say no to more stuff. ... But does all that ‘stuff’ make us happy? Is there a point where we feel like we have ‘enough’ or do we just want ‘more’? The Minimalists encourage letting go of our attachment to stuff and to instead live an intentional life. To focus more on relationships than possessions. To live a more meaningful life and let go of the need for stuff that won’t make you happy. This really appeals to me because changing our buying habits and buying less can only be good for the environment. So it’s really a win-win a lifestyle that makes us happier and is better for our planet! If you would like to find out more and access resources direct from The Minimalists check out the link below. And you can also follow their page on facebook if you want to be regularly updated. Worth a look and we hope you find something you can take away from their message #avoidreducereuse #waronwaste #sustainableliving #greenbandicoot #minimalism

08.01.2022 A really great way to reduce our impact on the environment is to buy second hand. Every time we buy something new it means using resources like materials, energy and water. Looking for items that are second hand not only means less resources needing to be used - it keeps that item out of landfill too. Which means less impact on the environment all round.... People often give away or sell items that have hardly been used and are in perfectly good condition, they just don’t need it anymore. Maybe they’ve just had a spring clean and de-cluttered! Check out all the buy-swap-sell pages around - lots of great things can be found without having to buy new. Visit your local op-shop too. Supporting op-shops not only saves you money but it saves the earth too! And you are supporting a charity at the same time winning all round! And as always we encourage everyone to be mindful of what they buy and bring into their homes. If you don’t really need it, avoid buying altogether #avoidreducereuse #waronwaste #buysecondhand #mindfulpurchasing #sustainabilityrocks #greenbandicootstyling

04.01.2022 Do you sometimes feel guilty for using too much plastic? Or having a take away coffee in a disposable coffee cup? Or forgetting your shopping bags when you go to do the grocery shopping? Again?!... It’s so easy to feel guilty for all the things you think you should be doing, but we wanted to say just do what you can! Everyone’s lives are different, everyone has different pressures on them and spare time seems to be very lacking. For me, I try to tackle one thing at a time. Right now I’m buying a few more things in bulk using my own reusable bags and containers to reduce plastic packaging, and have started making my own face and body products. Another person might focus on recycling as much as possible. Or avoiding single use plastics. Or buying second hand more often instead of buying new. Every little bit helps so we say keep doing what you are doing, be kind to yourself and know that you’re doing great! #avoidreducereuse #sustainabilityrocks #keepgoing #patontheback #greenbandicootstyling

03.01.2022 The weather is starting to turn and spring is in the air - loving these sunny days and blue skies! Spring is my favourite season, it feels fresh, warm and everything starts to grow! Spring is a great time to get out in the garden, get rid of the weeds and perhaps get stuck into the herb and vegie garden.... It’s the best feeling to head outside to the garden and pick ingredients fresh for your meals Here is a quick guide to spring gardening: Get some mulch or compost onto your garden beds to make sure there are plenty of nutrients. Mulch will help retain water too. If you don’t have a compost bin it’s a great time to start one kitchen scraps and garden and grass clippings can be turned into organic matter for your garden instead of ending up in landfill. It’s a great time to plant some vegies spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, carrots and sweet corn love spring! Herbs love spring too - parsley, mint, oregano, thyme, rosemary and chives are some to plant now. If you don’t have a big garden, plant up a few pots you’ll still be able to harvest herbs and vegetables that don’t need much room. Water them regularly and watch them grow! Then sit back and enjoy the rewards of your work! Enjoy this lovely weather! #avoidreducereuse #waronwaste #springhassprung #sustainabilityrocks #greenbandicootstyling

02.01.2022 It’s a long weekend and school holidays in South Australia and it’s a great time to get out and about and back to nature. Whether you have set off on a camping trip, a picnic in a park, or have a hike or two planned, enjoying some time in the great outdoors brings lots of benefits. Spending time in nature reduces stress and anxiety, and studies have found that it also improves our long-term wellbeing and overall health.... Pretty good reasons to get out there and take it all in! It’s a chance to slow down and connect with family and friends too, switch off the devices and enjoy the simple things in life. We hope whatever you are up to this weekend that you are enjoying some fresh air and getting the benefits of what nature has to offer :-) #avoidreducereuse #waronwaste #sustainability #naturenurtures #greenbandicootstyling

01.01.2022 We love sharing good news and this week we found out that two of the Onya products we stock won awards in the 2020 Eco Excellence Awards! The Reusable Produce Bags won the Waste Control category, and Reusable Bulk Food Bags were the winning product in Home Décor and Accessories category. We are not surprised the Reusable Produce Bags are one of our most popular products and help reduce the need for plastic when shopping for fruit and vegetables.... Both products are made from recycled plastic bottles and can be used again and again, helping keep plastic out of landfill and contributing to the war on waste. We love teaming up with companies that are committed to sustainability and keeping our environment clean and healthy. If you haven’t tried these award winning products yet, we highly recommend them! We use them regularly and our local greengrocer and health food store have embraced the use of reusable bags. Join us in helping to reduce our impact on the environment!
