25.01.2022 Day 48 of the Greenbank Scouting@Home program. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the worlds best plan to build a better world for people and our planet by 2030. Adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, the SDGs are a call for action by all countries - poor, rich and middle-income - to promote prosperity while protecting the environment. They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a r...ange of social needs including education, health, equality and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and working to preserve our ocean and forests. Scouts Australia and Scouts Queensland along with the World Scouts Organisation have committed all Scouts to the SDGs. SDGs make perfect individual Special Interest Areas. Make sure you contact your Unit leader to complete the Plan-Do-Review process to get signed off. Fact - 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted every year, while almost 2 billion people go hungry or undernourished. Globally, 2 billion people are overweight or obese. If people everywhere switched to energy efficient lightbulbs, the world would save US$120 billion annually. Every day we buy and use things that we need. To move to be a more responsible consumer, we need to put more thought into these purchases. One way to do this is to think about items that your family buys and come up with alternatives that you could make yourself. By doing this you could save on the resources, energy, water and everything else that went into making it. Lets take a kitchen sponge: Most are made from synthetic materials and sold in multipacks as they are designed to be used and thrown away. You could come up with a homemade alternative. This is a small sewing project so hopefully you are used to sewing on your badges and it wont be difficult. There are lots of different ways to make these, so go online and find pick a design. At its simplest, grab a few pieces of scrap material and stitch them together to make a pad the size of a dish sponge. Coarser material will do a better job for the outside, but you can use softer material to stuff it. Stitch the pieces together on three sides, then fold the pocket inside out and stuff it. Finish off by stitching the last side to close it up. After using the sponge, stick it in with the laundry and it is ready to go again, and again and again!

25.01.2022 How fabulous! A possible new group of the beautiful yellow bellied gliders found right here in Greenbank. How lucky are we to live in such an amazing location.

24.01.2022 Happy fathers Day to all our dads and significant male role models out there. And a special thank you to all our male volunteers. The biggest difference you can make in a young persons life is giving them someone to look up to. Have an awesome day.

24.01.2022 Day 50 of the Greenbank Scouting@Home program. With 1 fold and 3 cuts, I have created this! Can you work out how? ... Grab some paper and scissors and see if you can do the same!

23.01.2022 Congratulations to Reese! At the Scouts Queensland 11th annual Founders Day dinner on Friday night, Reese was 1 of 4 winners of the inaugural Scout of the Year award. From more than 50 nominations across the state, 8 finalists were named with 4 being named the inaugural winners. Reese achieved her Australian Scout Medallion with Greenbank Thursday Scouts last year. With her final hike being cancelled numerous times, firstly due to bushfire and then COVID-19, Reese showed resilience and commitment during a trying year to complete all the requirements for this award. We are all immensely proud of her achievements. B R A V O

23.01.2022 Day 56 of the Greenbank Scouting@Home program, The fundamentals of Scouting for over 110 years now has been learning by doing. At camps especially we like to use SNOT. No, not that snot...... SNOT, Supervised Not Organised Time. Time for our youth to be watched over for safety but allow them to "play". Given things to use. Activate their minds. This image sums up that philosophy. SNOT is vital. Never underestimate the learning that occurs while our youth engage their imagina...tion and play outdoors. #scoutingathome

22.01.2022 Day 59 of the Greenbank Scouting@Home program Here is a good video on 7 essential knots! In these 7 knots are all the basic knots our Scouts learn as they progress through their scouting journey.... How many can you do? What is your favourite or most used? Which one do you need to learn or work on? See more

19.01.2022 Fabulous turnout at the Greenbank RSL Anzac Day March 2021. We have paid our respects to all our service people for their sacrifices. We salute you.

19.01.2022 Day 63 of the Greenbank Scouting@Home program. Today is a simple video to watch and think about. Scouts Australia has released their findings from their year long study into the effects of Scouting over the long term for our youth and adults alike.... Very interesting statistics have come out of the study although for those of us that have been involved for a while, none of it is a surprise. While you watch it, have a think about your own life and how it has been changed by attending Scouts. Its something that we dont often think about because we are too busy just enjoying all the fun we do at Scouts! #scoutingathome

18.01.2022 Today's Hummingbird House story is one very close to home. Abbey is an extra special part of our Greenbank Scout group family. Abbey joined her brothers in our youth sections last year and absolutely loves the social interaction she gets. Read all about her and her family below and the amazing work that hummingbird house is doing for them all.... Get out to Coles today and support this incredible foundation by buying your very own Abbey token.

18.01.2022 Take a moment to think about this over the next 4 weeks. We are all quick to rush in and spend more so we can get some random piece of plastic that gets forgotten about in no time and becomes just another piece of environmental rubbish. While making big business a little bit richer. For just $2, you can get a beautiful Hummingbird House token from Coles to keep and also know your money is going to a worthy cause.

18.01.2022 Have you been wanting to find a way to support Greenbank Scout Group but unable to commit to weekly section meetings and planning? Keen to help our Scout community provide the best Scouting experience for our youth? Do you have financial/accounting/book keeper experience? Do you have knowledge of Xero or keen to learn? Do you have a keen eye for detail?... Then we would love to hear from you! At our upcoming ARP (AGM) we are looking to appoint a new Treasurer/s. Splitting the role between 2 would help ease the workload on one individual as well as provide back up and remove one more role from the GLs overflowing plate! We hold Executive Committee meetings once a month at a time that suits all, lately online, for which you would provide a Treasurers report on our financial position. Then there is the invoicing , bills and reconciliation. All now electronic through Xero. Answering email queries of families is another important task. Training provided, Blue card required which the group will organise on your behalf, scoutsqld email address and IT support plus the joy of working with a group of like minded volunteers ensuring the uniformed leaders have everything they need to continue to provide amazing Scouting activities for our youth. Contact me today for a confidential chat. Tony [email protected] 0401 146 729

18.01.2022 I tell all our new families this! The longer your child attends and the more activities they get involved in, the more they get out of Scouting. Resilience is grown slowly in our children, it is about pushing that boundary of comfort little by little, further and further, in a safe, supportive environment. Little by little, over years, they learn that being outside their comfort zone isn't scary or dangerous, it's just different. That's resilience. That's grit. Live is lived... outside our comfort zone. Embrace it. And life is amazing. #grit #resilience #scouts See more

17.01.2022 Today we had some of the Committee and Leaders at the den to ensure everything is in place for our return to face to face Scouting from Monday. A few important things to remember for our youth and parents. The traffic plan has already been emailed out and I have attached a photo of the plan here. Water bottles are a must. The water fountains have been turned off for health reasons. We ask all families to come a little earlier and be patient as we work through our safe return.... We have tried to think of everything to ensure traffic flows smoothly. If you have any concerns or questions, please email me at [email protected] Please talk to your youth about the changes and among your friends at Scouts in case a family hasnt seen the email. Cant wait to see all the smiling little faces of our excited youth back this week!

17.01.2022 Day 52 of the Greenbank Scouting@Home program. How cool are these! Will certainly keep the sun out of your eyes...... Cant wait to see your attempts. Why not decorate them as well. Make sure you post your photos below.

17.01.2022 Greenbank Scout returns tomorrow night!! Hope all our Monday Joeys are super excited, being the first section back! Another email sent this evening outlining some more points about our return.... Please allow a little extra time if possible, to get through the drop off procedure. Our water fountains are turned off, so our youth MUST bring their own water bottle filled at home. Talk to your youth about the drop off and pick up so they are ready. Any questions, contact me ASAP, [email protected] Cant wait to see all our smiling youth again!

16.01.2022 Day 45 of the Greenbank Scouting@Home program. Meet the Eastern Curlew. Have you ever camped or stayed near the beaches around SE Qld? The eerie bird call you have heard at night has probably come from the rarest and coolest migratory birds in the world. The eastern Curlew calls SE Qld wetlands home for part of the year. The other part of the year it undertakes a 10,000km journey one way to Siberia! Flying over some of the worlds most densely populated countries, every year ...it flies back to Siberia to mate and lay its eggs. Before returning to our SE Qld wetlands. An incredible journey for an amazing bird. However their habitat is under threat from developers. Surely the want for housing on our sensitive foreshore and wetlands should be put behind the need for these rare and endangered migratory birds to have a safe place to call home? Why dont you do some research into the Eastern Curlew and their amazing life and decide if you want to follow the link to sign the petition for better environmental laws to protect these birds and hundreds of other species. Did you find some other important endangered species we need to protect? Can you plan, research and develop a presentation for your patrol to show the importance and what we can do to protect them? #scoutingathome

He does great little starter packs for those just getting into paracord and will happily chat everything paracord.... #scoutingathome

08.01.2022 Saturday evening on yet another super busy weekend in the life of Greenbank Scout group. While our dedicated fundraising team ran our first Bunnings BBQ under all new restrictions, our little Joeys were learning all about flight. They even had a visit by a real life Qantas pilot! And our Cub Scouts are camping at Karingal Scout Campsite getting the opportunity to do activities like the climbing wall and canoeing. Phew, Im exhausted just reading about it! Do you want to be part of this fun? Email us today, [email protected]

06.01.2022 Who said Scouts is all about camping and outdoor adventure? The range of activities our youth get involved is limited only by their imagination. Every year the Scouts Queensland Gang show is a popular activity for our youth with an interest in theatre and music. We have had Scouts, Cubs and adults involved every year for a long time and even with the COVID-19 restrictions this year, we are involved. Delayed and now limited to 2 days of short shows, bookings have just opened. The perfection opportunity to get a great idea on the fun this popular activity can provide.

06.01.2022 A fabulous video about Scouting. If you ever wondered what Scouting gives our young people, then this video will show you exactly what we instill into our youth. My favourite quote from the video? "If you think you can or you cant. You are right." Think about that. ... Its a mindset. Internal grit. At Greenbank Scouts we look to grow that grit in our youth. That inner confidence that turns their thought to "I can" when confronted with challenges. Scouts Queensland

Embark on a fun real-world adventure that will open your eyes to the amazing and beautiful life all around you. ... Start by getting outdoors to capture (just with photos!) as much life as you can. Youll score gold for every sighting, with extra gold if you can identify what youve found. And even more gold if you can find something rare or interesting. Lets see how far up the world leader board we can get!

01.01.2022 Day 47 of the Greenbank Scouting@Home program. Today, we look at SDG 11. Sustainable Cities and Communities. Fact - The worlds cities occupy just 3 per cent of the Earths land, but account for 60-80 per cent of energy consumption and 75 per cent of carbon emissions. Half of humanity 3.5 billion people lives in cities today and 5 billion people are projected to live in cities by 2030. For this exercise, gather up whatever you can find to act as building blocks. If you have younger siblings you might have toddler building blocks, or maybe there is a box of Jenga blocks under a bed. Otherwise you could grab empty food packaging or other boxes and containers. You are going to build two structures to see how different approaches work out. For the first one, your aim is to be fast. Dont think about where anything is to go, just grab each block and plonk it in wherever there is space. You are not looking to make things fit together, or match, or even balance. Go so fast that you dont even have time to think about what you are doing! When it is done, take a picture. Next, clear the blocks away and start again. Take your time and give it some thought. Figure how the blocks will fit together to be stable and make nice designs. Build up the way and out the way but leave some space as well. Make sure everything is sturdy and nice to look at. When you have used up all the blocks, take another picture. Would you like to live in a city which has grown with no thought, or where every development is planned to give the best outcome for everyone?
