24.01.2022 We are open!!! We've had a fabulous first day and we have loved seeing some visitors for orientation, too. We're excited to continue sharing the connections we've already made as well as welcoming many new friends this week!

23.01.2022 It’s Easter and what an ‘Egg’stravaganza we have had in Nursery 1. We had an Egg Experience Play Tray which was more popular than anyone could have imagined. We had different natural materials resembling nests, we had eggs of different colour and size, we had egg boxes, egg cups and spoons and mixing bowls and colanders. We could crack our eggs in half or have them hard boiled. The environment was both pretend play, math, sensory and communication rich. some may have thought that enough but no! We had a mini Easter trail and face paint as well. If you followed the trail correctly and found the Easter Kangaroo then a craft goodie bag awaited the children. Enjoy the pictures.

23.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day, a day where we stop to think about the people who served our country in the First World War. The remembrance poppy was inspired by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae’s poem written in 1915 called In Flanders Fields. His poem describes the poppies growing in the churned soil of the battlefields of Europe. Our children created some poppy artwork, using the bottom of a drink bottle for the petals, and buttons for the pistil (the dark coloured centre of the poppy).

22.01.2022 Our Tiny tots & Toddlers prepared ham and cheese savoury muffins and sweet banana muffins in their latest culinary class. Our chef, Sam, provided ingredients to the children and she also demonstrated how to mix them. We had discussions with the children about the various ingredients, what they looked like and smelt like. The children used gross motor skills as they were mixing the flour using a circular motion and added various ingredients into the mix, one at a time. Our children were very much involved and engaged during this activity; Chef Sam is such a hit with her culinary classes!!

21.01.2022 This week we have started our Yoga experiences! Children were invited to participate in the group activity and to learn about stretching, muscles, movement, breathing and how our body feels when we move. We finished off with some relaxing breathing exercises by pretending we were blowing our tummies up like a balloon, and then letting out all of the air. Educators joined in too and felt very relaxed by the end of it! Ask your children to show you some of the movements we went through!

21.01.2022 At Green Leaves Newton, we have a magnificent tree in our Kindy yard that was planted by the original owner's daughter in the 1940s. This week, the children noticed the fallen leaves and flower fragments from the tree, which they decided to collect for artwork. The children had a wonderful time exploring their identity and creating facial features with the resources.

19.01.2022 Self-help skills are the everyday tasks undertaken so that children are ready to participate in life activities (including washing hands, eating, etc.) Self-help skills are one of the first ways that children develop the ability to plan and sequence task performance, to organize the necessary materials and to develop the refined physical control required to carry out their daily tasks (e.g., opening bag, drinking water by themselves, drawing or getting dressed). Our tiny tots and toddlers are encouraged and motivated to develop these skills by scraping the leftover food in the green compost bin, washing hands before and after meal times, wiping their hands, and eating with the help of spoon. This is to help the children build their own self-identities and independence skills.

19.01.2022 We had a fun time exploring our brand new learning hubs with families that attended our first sessions of centre tours! It was wonderful meeting you all! There are still tour sessions available for Monday. If you haven't already, book your centre tour now at https://greenleavesearlylearning1.eventbritestudio.com/1243

17.01.2022 Last week we celebrated Diwali! We have so many different cultures represented in our centre so it was wonderful to have some of our educators teach the children about their special celebrations. The children were able to try on the Saree, wear a Bindi, and hold the Diya, which is a clay lamp. These lamps are filled with oil and cotton thread which is lit like a candle during Diwali! One of our educators also cooked Dal for the children to try, which they all tried for lunch. The children's artwork sparkled with glitter which was perfect for the festival of lights!

15.01.2022 We have such an exciting month planned for December! Many great activities organised throughout our month...what are you and your children most excited for?! Our Christmas week is fast approaching too; keep your eye out for more detailed information to come!

13.01.2022 We’re continuing to provide care for children of essential workers during the current ‘circuit breaker restrictions’. We’re sending our love to all our families currently isolating and look forward to welcoming you back to the centre soon.

11.01.2022 Developing strong relationships between children and educators is a very important part of orientation in a new environment! Our framework describes these relationships as being central to children developing acceptance, self-esteem and higher functioning thinking skills that contribute to positive learning and life outcomes (KidsMatter Early Childhood). Educators can take an active role in nurturing, supporting and promoting children’s relationships and social skills. We are loving learning more about our little people and developing those strong bonds!

11.01.2022 Our weekly Culinary experiences provide the opportunity to create healthy eating habits and a positive relationship with food. This week Chef Sam came in and showed us how to create bugs from vegetables. Using celery as the body, covering it with cream cheese and using cherry tomatoes for the eyes. The children watched intently as Sam demonstrated how to create the bug, they then attempted to create their own bugs. The children giggled away as they focused on placing the ve...getables on the slippery cream cheese, this required focus and coordination. As they completed their bugs the children were encouraged to eat their creation. Because the children had created the snack, most children were excited to try the vegetables

11.01.2022 It's NAIDOC week! The theme for this year is "Always was, always will be" which recognises that First Nations people have been here for over 65,000 years! Amongst many things, one of the purposes of NAIDOC week is to bring attention to and acknowledge that we are made up of many cultures within this continent, and we are all managing the land to sustainably provide for our future. Today we have painted with leaves, plant material, cotton buds and paintbrushes to create dot paintings and planned for many wonderful experiences this week. Watch out for our culinary treats later on this week!

11.01.2022 This week, we had a great time welcoming our educators to the centre for induction! We look forward to seeing our families on Monday, as we officially open for care!

10.01.2022 This week the Junior Kindy children put on their scientist caps to explore different states of matter, using frozen paint. To do this the children squirted their choice of coloured paint into an ice cube tray, then using a pipette, they collected water and added it to the tray, mixing them both together. Emily facilitated scientific language as she explained how the liquid was moulded into the shape of the ice cube tray, and if placed elsewhere would make a different shape. S...he then explained how when the trays were placed in the freezer, the paint would freeze and become solid, with the shape only changing when it was melted again. We could melt the ice by using it as paint on paper. Once the frozen paint was taken out of the freezer and made accessible to the children, they became very engaged with dragging it up and down on the paper, painting as they observed the ice melting. 08.01.2022 Over three days we had a shredded paper messy play experience in Nursery 1. Each day it was slightly different but based on children’s current play interests which were the sandpit, home corner and balls. We added buckets and spades, ducks and boats the first day allowing filling and emptying activities to occur. We saw quite a few children bathing, lying down and covering themselves in the paper which was lovely to see. The next day we made some minor changes with pans and w...ooden spoons, still with the same idea to encourage children to fill and empty containers. It was interesting to see that the children added fruit and vegetable toys. We saw a lot of spoon usage and mixing. On the last day, we had quite a few younger children so we exchanged everything for balls. Big, Small, Silver. We saw lots of children picking up the balls, exploring their shapes, sizes and colours and we also saw some lovely sharing where balls were passed back and forth. The experience was not only sensory but offered social, emotional learning, gross and fine motor skill development and an introduction to maths with regards to space, shape and measure. The activity was really well received by the children so we hope to start offering a lot more of this type of activity. See more

07.01.2022 Harmony Day is a celebration of our cultural diversity. The message for Harmony Day is 'everybody belongs' and aims to promote respect for cultural and religious diversity throughout Australia. Our toddlers were asked to come in orange coloured dress and educators wore their traditional clothes to represent their culture. We started our day by sitting together on the carpet and acknowledged the owners of the land followed by singing the Inanay song. Throughout the day the children enjoyed lots of group activities including reading stories, music and movement, and collaborative learning activities promoting the children to work together.

06.01.2022 This week, Belle, our artist in residence visited in the morning. She had created paint board pictures covered with cling film. As the children touched the boards, they would move the paint which in turn would change the picture. The children had great fun learning about paint colours and when mixed together with other colours what happens to them. For example, they change shade, get lighter. The children also saw how the fluid paint moves constantly because of their touch and how it changes shape. As the cling film breaks it becomes messy play. They see the paint on their hands and how it transfers when they touch anything.

06.01.2022 Last week, Elisabeth provided the children with two blocks of ice and water paint, and the children chose to explore this provocation in many different ways. It started out as the children observed what was happening when the colours mixed together, noting the changes. "Look yellow and blue changed to green" they observed. As the children continued to paint the block, they began to notice bubbles and holes occurring. So they questioned what was happening. Elisabeth then explained the concept of melting to the children, who then became engaged in doing everything they could to melt the ice, painting as fast as they could, observing the process. This experience provided the opportunity to explore colour mixing, sensory exploration, and the states of matter such as moving from solid to liquid form.

03.01.2022 April visited us last week for a mindfulness session in Nursery. We listened to calming music, felt rainbow scarves on our face, watched leaves float through the air and land on or near us and enjoyed the Tibetan singing bowl sounds and vibrations. These relaxing sensory sessions are specially designed to give children skills to help them cope with the stresses of modern day life.

02.01.2022 It's official, we open for care on Monday 2 November! We look forward to welcoming all our families to our brand new early learning centre! To register your interest visit https://greenleaveselc.com.au/centre/newton/

01.01.2022 Every child is an artist Young children have a natural desire to explore and experiment, they explore the sensory and physical experience of mark making. Mark making is more than just a scribble, It’s the creation of different patterns, lines, textures and shapes that children make using a range of different mediums.
