21.01.2022 In one corner of Sussex, a couple took a leap of faith 20 years ago, and handed 3,500 acres of their farmland estate to nature. By rather unorthodox means, they looked to our ancient past for inspiration. This is what happened next #Springwatch

13.01.2022 While we all engage in social distancing and self isolating, now is the time to look at your garden and see what you might be able to grow. I'm hoping to propagate some Brugmansias from my Brugmansia candida 'double white'. https://www.gardenclinic.com.au/h/angels-trumpet-brugmansia

06.01.2022 A quick guide to know what to plant this time of year. It might be getting cooler and wetter but that doesn't mean you still can't have a productive vegie garden. https://www.scottsaustralia.com.au//winter-in-the-vegeta/

04.01.2022 The allure of the Peony! Many have tried, but few succeed to bloom these incredible garden plants, so we complied some helpful hints to get you started with the... Queen of the Garden! Now is the time to purchase and plant peonies, check out your local garden centre for a quality range of Drewitts Bulbs products. Peonies should not be allowed to dry out, and should not be in a perforated bag. Lush, rich pink, firm growth tips indicate a fresh and healthy piece. Once purchased, they should be planted as soon as possible. Select a full sun position, preferably in the feistiest location in your garden. Whilst the actual flowers are delicate, the plants themselves are incredibly hardy once established. The hot summer sun, not such an issue...more important is the winter cold...and to achieve that, generally full sun is required. A PH of 7.5-8 is required to inspire blooming and the condition a healthy plant. Dig in a few good handfuls of lime as you prepare your hole to a depth of 20cm. Plant the root with the eyes (pink tips) facing upwards, as best as possible. The eyes do not want to be deep! No more than 2cm below the surface. A common mistake is to plant them to deep, which results in lack of flowers. Mulching is not necessary and ultimately puts the eyes deeper and deeper within the ground. Feed with a handful of dynamic lifter...now you wait. Herbaceous Peonies do not like to be moved, and once divided will take some time to re establish. If the plant goes to flower in its first couple of years of growth, the bloom should be removed! Why?!? Because in removing its bloom you allow the root to establish its fibrous root system, and thus sustain the thicker root system. If the root puts all its energy into flowering, it will not establish such a strong root system - crucial for future flowering. Peonies do not like companion planting, and do not enjoy their roots being disturbed! Avoiding planting annuals in their immediate root area is essential. The old saying is the first year it sleeps, the second year it creeps and the third year it leaps. Patience is key! Lime is key! Did I mention patience is key?!? #peony #helpfulhints #plantingguide #lime

02.01.2022 Ikea is switching to a new mushroom-based, biodegradable alternative to polystyrene (Styrofoam) packaging for its furniture and home decor. Known as Mycofoam, t...he product is made of agricultural waste products like corn or hemp husks, oat hulls or cotton burrs and mushroom spores. The agricultural waste is molded into the desired shape and then seeded with mushroom spores, which begin to sprout mycelium, the vegetative part of fungi that forms a web of hairlike roots that typically hold soil together, but in this case hold the packaging together. Once the packaging has served its purpose it can be tossed in a lake to feed fish or into your compost pile to fertilize your garden, says the video below. In these moist environments, Mycofoam is completely biodegraded in just a couple of weeks via Returntonow.net read more https://bioplasticsnews.com//ikea-styrofoam-mushroom-biop/ Join our Leaf of Life FB community group https://www.facebook.com/groups/leafoflifecommunity/ Join our other socials...
