24.01.2022 World Environment Day is next Friday June 5th. World Environment Day (WED) is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment. Over the years it has grown to be a broad, global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated by stakeholders in over 100 countries. It also serves as the ‘people’s day’ for doing something positive for the environment. You could plant a tree in your backyard, carpool to work, swi...tch your light-bulbs to long lasting LED ones or simply use less water. What positive action will you be doing for the environment?

18.01.2022 Today is R U Ok day? A quick conversation could save a life. 2020 has been a tougher year than usual for many people so now is the time to ask people you work with, live with, study with, socialise with and people in your community if the are ok? The R U Ok website has some fantastic resources on how to approach these conversations and what to do once you have started the conversation. https://www.ruok.org.au/
17.01.2022 Have you ever wanted to start your own compost bin or worm farm? Are you in the Brisbane City Council? If you said yes to both of these question BCC are currently offering rebates to help you set up either a compost bin or worm farm. ... They even provide a quick video tutorial on how to go about it. Both are relatively easy to do and a great activity for the kids to get involved in. For more info head to - https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au//co/compost-rebate-program.
16.01.2022 Household waste has increased by 20 per cent since the pandemic and is reflecting a trend that is commonly seen around the Christmas and New Year period typically. The Australian Council of Recycling are putting this down to people panic buying and purchasing a lot of single use items which is leading to our waste bins becoming fuller. Conversely, on the flip side, waste generated in commercial offices/ workplaces is seeing a downward trend with more and more companies dec...iding to maintain working from home policies post covid and reduce overhead costs. This article from the ABC looks at the claim a little bit further. https://www.abc.net.au//coronavirus-sees-househo/12568810

12.01.2022 Wanting a project that’s great for the environment and gets the kids involved even the littlest ones?? Composting is a great way to dispose of leftover food scraps and turn them into a nutrient rich food for your garden. A few other benefits of composting include -... It retains more water resulting in less of a need to water plants as often; It reduces soil erosion and helps to build a stable soil structure; Reduces the waste going into our landfills and Reduces the need for synthetic fertilisers saving you money. If you have a compost bin and or worm farm what tips can you share or share a picture of how you have it setup.

02.01.2022 Mens Health week is June 15-21. Engineering is a male dominated industry and while some of the stats below are sobering we can all encourage the men in our lives to speak to their GP's about health concerns, talk to friends and family about their feelings and thoughts and encourage healthy diets and lifestyle. All this emphasis on the health of boys and men - what's that about? They're alright, aren't they? In many cases, the answer is no.... A boy born in Australia in 2010 has a life expectancy of 78.0 years while a baby girl born at the same time could expect to live to 82.3 years old. Right from the start, boys suffer more illness, more accidents and die earlier than their female counterparts. Men take their own lives at four times the rate of women (that's five men a day, on average). Accidents, cancer and heart disease all account for the majority of male deaths.
