24.01.2022 The Gabba ward is giving away free plants and soil to the first 30 households who put their hands up to green their verge!

24.01.2022 Forget Sydney! In 2018 there was a 32% increase in pedestrian fatalities in Queensland compared to 5 years prior. People are dying because we prioritise speed and cars over human health. To be explicit?: We prioritise cars over pedestrians and cyclists. Brisbane City Council and Space4cyclingbne Brisbane Times Courier Mail isnt Oslo good? Lets be like Oslo ... "Its all about humans taking back the streets from cars," Mr Johansen told Smart Cities "It is a win-win situation for our safety, our health, our quality of life and the environment. https://www.smh.com.au//oslo-cut-road-deaths-to-one-in-201 QLD pedestrian fatalities data source: QLD Gov: TMR: Queensland Walking Strategy

23.01.2022 Another great post from our friends at Space4cyclingbne on the need for cycleways along shady streetscapes. Hope everyone has managed to find some shade and some water on his sweltering day!

23.01.2022 The lovely charity The Mini Farm Project are looking for volunteers to help grow food for people in need in Camp Hill, Caboolture and Alex Hills. If youre needing a bit of nature and soil therapy and want to get involved - get in touch they are a wonderful crew!

22.01.2022 Happy Sunday! What a great break down of what a street really is. And how we can use it for so much more than automobile transport. It can be a space for play for children, rest for the elderly, include street furniture, trees, habitat and so forth! Lets reclaim our streets (all their width) and think about how much better they could be if we looked at them holistically! Thanks Rachel Smith for this great graphic

22.01.2022 A nice post from the guardian on how to plant trees and where - in Brisbane and most Australian cities you can actually request a sapling tree if you want to plant in your verge. Often they will have a select number of species to choose from too. Council like to check that there are no major services and then usually ask people to water them to keep them going in the first couple of years as they establish. If you are looking to green your street we recommend checking out your local guidelines and consider hosting a street planting party with friends and neighbours! #greenthestreet #greenthecity #savetheplanet #plantatree

22.01.2022 Hello green the street friends! We are all about bringing community together to create better places - through planting parties, festivals and talks, but in this time of crisis we have cancelled all of our upcoming festivals from now until August. Growing out of crisis however are a number of groups that might be of interest to people here during the pandemic. One of these is Growing Forward. In their words:... Growing Forward is about building community resistance and food security to create resilience during times of crisis. We are looking to do this through three main avenues: 1. Development of market/community gardens in private yards, shared neighbourhood spaces and public land. 2. Utilisation of edible weeds and foraged foods. 3. Reclamation of food destined for landfill and redirection of this food to those in need. We are intending to implement these projects by helping to connect people who are co-located, in the same streets/neighbourhoods/suburbs, and to support each other by sharing resources, space and labour to make this happen! We will use online spaces to plan and organise, as well as developing systems to work together on projects while maintaining appropriate social distancing and isolation protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please join the facebook group here to keep up with meetings and other events, and find each other: [https://www.facebook.com/groups/562663581013609/ ](https://www.facebook.com/groups/562663581013609/) There is a Google Drive folder available within the facebook group to share resources and collaborative documents. Please get in contact with them if you have questions These projects will be taking place on the stolen lands of the Jagera, Turrbal, Yuggera and Ugarapul people, whose sovereignty was never ceded, and who are still fighting for justice.

17.01.2022 Random reach out! Do any green the streeters live in or near Bardon and have 5 minutes at 6.30pm to help with a Woodford Folk Festival/Green the Street art project this evening? (involves lifting a sideboard) Let us know if you do! :)

16.01.2022 A greenthestreeter new year resolution: wherever we are in urban areas, let us look for those sacks of re.existence in which the abandoned is beautified, the concrete is vegetalised, the flowers are feeding the bees (and others), the walls are talking to thee. What are they telling us? What message can we read in a hive located for nonhumans by humans on public land? What is a bench inviting us to do? greenthestreet and merry days

12.01.2022 The future is fungi Woodford Folk Festival

12.01.2022 Vital as our cities warm and we go into record hot summers. Did you know trees cool is not just because they provide shade but because they are transpiring (releasing) water from their leaves. This increases their cooling effect and is like a subtle water mister. Clever trees .

10.01.2022 This Sunday the Pocket Community Garden will be hosting a mini Vergefest prior to their 10 year anniversary celebrations at the garden. We will be meeting at Black Sheep Coffee at 10.00am for a relaxed walk around the neighbourhood to see verges, communal backyard gardens and native beehives! Message Elle on 0409569377 if you need to find the group.

09.01.2022 "A rising international force of rebel botanists armed with chalk has taken up street graffiti to highlight the names and importance of the diverse but downtrodden flora growing in the cracks of paths and walls in towns and cities..."

06.01.2022 Another great way to keep community spirit alive!

05.01.2022 Cycling is for everyone - even one of the greatest basketballers of all time. LeBron James has thrown his weight behind New Yorks push for protected bike lane...s, and particularly to see them provided in lower income areas of the city where kids need them to get to school, get to the park and, of course, the basketball court. A bike opened doors, allowed me to get to safe places after school, and gave me access to opportunities I never would have known, James said. See more

04.01.2022 Hi Green the Street community and Verge planting afficianados! Participants are needed for undergraduate research on edible verge gardening in Brisbane suburbs. The research aims to explore what motivates people to grow food along their footpaths and street verges in Brisbane. Participants will be asked to partake in an interview that will last between 30 minutes to an hour and will ask seven open-ended questions about their motivations for edible verge gardening. If youre interested in participating or have any questions about the research, please feel free to email Molly at [email protected]

04.01.2022 Why green the street? So as to have a secret garden to spend time in to enjoy the freedom of a community grown fig or nectarine to take a breath with those who give us life. Plants. Plant... more Plants. Daylesford Community Food Gardens See more

04.01.2022 Photos from our friends Space4cyclingbne of Margaret Street on Friday afternoon - This was Margaret St in the CBD on Friday afternoon. Weve campaigned for the right-most of the 4 lanes to be converted to a 2-way separated bikeway as part of a CBD Grid. Currently that lane is mostly used for on-street parking. Surely car parking in the CBD is something that should be left to the private market rather than subsidised by donating valuable public land for the benefit of very few people?? Other kerb-side usesincluding loading zones and space for buses and taxiscould all be consolidated to the left side of the street. Its high time for Brisbane let go of an unhealthy obsession with on-street parking, and bring life back to our CBD streets. - we couldnt agree more!

03.01.2022 We would have to agree!

02.01.2022 7 verges in one day! Make sure you get along to this verge-tastic morning next Saturday.

02.01.2022 A reminder that greening the street always happens within more-than-human communities. BEEodiversity.

02.01.2022 A great cause from one of Green the Streets activation partners Substation33. Have you got unused tech? Donate it today to get computers out to young students who need them.

01.01.2022 Keeping the practice alive. GREEN THE STREET! P.S. we all live in the same house :)
