09.01.2022 CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) JOBKEEPER PAYMENT FOR BUSINESSES The Federal and State Governments have introduced various measures to provide financial assistance to businesses and to stimulate the economy. ... A JobKeeper Payment of $1,500 per fortnight per employee will be paid to business entities that have experienced a downturn in sales or business receipts of more than 30%, relative to a comparable month or GST quarter in 2019. The subsidy also applies to a business owner, or a nominated business participant, in the case of a company or partnership, regardless of whether the business has eligible employees. Are you eligible? Do you conduct a business with an ABN? We refer to a business as defined for taxation purposes - not rental income nor investment income. Were you carrying on that business on 1 March 2020? Has the business suffered a decline in turnover? It does not matter whether it is due to Covid-19 or the subsequent effect on the economy that has caused the drop in turnover. If you answer yes to the above questions, you may be eligible for JobKeeper Payments. If your business is eligible you need to register with the Australian Taxation Office as soon as possible. JobKeeper Payments of $1,500 per fortnight will be paid for each eligible employee of the business. Eligible employees must satisfy the following requirements The employee was employed by the business at 1 March 2020 The employee continues in that employment The employee is full-time, part-time or a long-term casual employee; (ie has been employed as a casual employee on a regular basis for at least 12 months as at 1 March 2020) The employee was at least 16 years of age on 1 March 2020; there are also limitations for students aged 16 & 17 years The JobKeeper Payments are also payable to a business entity which has a business participant - eg. a sole trader, or a partner or other business participant who is not an employee. The business entity must have an ABN and can only receive JobKeeper payments for one business participant eg. only one partner of a partnership. Similar eligibility requirements apply, plus there are alternative tests for those who do not satisfy the decline in turnover test. Eligible employers or business entities need to check the provisions and register on the ATO website. Detailed information about the JobKeeper Payment is available at www.ato.gov.au Please contact the Gregory & McCarthy office if assistance is required.
