21.01.2022 Wickham Community Hub. The Carapice emerges!

20.01.2022 Did you know that Design WA came into effect today? We were at the launch of this suite of policies that will elevate the role of design and address community concerns around infill and multi-res development. Gresley Abas was lead consultant on the draft Apartment Codes so we know this stuff inside-out. Our SODA Apartments are an example of the thoughtful design thats possible in multi-res. We design homes, not just apartments. Congrats to the DPLH and OGA team especially Ni...c Temov, Matt Stack, and Carmel Van Ruth for an undying commitment to quality for the community. And of course to everyone else deeply involved in he process. A very good day for WA! #designwa #multires #multiresidentialarchitecture #architecture #design #architecturematters #valueofarchitecture #australianarchitecture #architectureanddesign #waarchitects #waarchitecture #architecturewesternaustralia #pertharchitects #pertharchitecture #interiordesign #perthcity #lifeonthestreet #urbanplanning #urbandesign #perthisok #infill #infilldevelopment #designquality #designqualityperth #apartmentdesign #makingplaces #makingcommunities #placemaking #designexperts

20.01.2022 Yesterdays PIA Design WA Apartment Design Code 101 workshop with planners and architects gave us all a chance to workshop the types of projects and scenarios that will arise when #DesignWA launches in May. Phil enjoyed spending time facilitating with Kathy Bonus - role playing local government planners as proponents - and joined the Q&A panel alongside Kathy (DPLH), Carmel van Ruth (OGA), Peter Prendergast (City of Melville) and Andrew Lefort (City of Cockburn) Here at GA ...we have been involved in the design review from both sides of the table so it was great to share experiences and how to make it work for both sides. Collaboration! Who would have thought Thanks Emma de Jager for inviting Phil to take part, it was a really instructive / enlightening / enjoyable workshop. #DPLH #WAPC #OfficeofGovernmentArchitect #OGA #AIAWAChapter #DesignWA

19.01.2022 Wickham: heart of the community The design of this community hub is highly responsive to its location: the building emerges from the landscape, casting large shadows over generous external spaces, while a robust carapace roof protects the colourful underbelly which resembles a creek bed from harsh sun and wind. In short, it provides an oasis in this Pilbara town. The community response to this project has been exhilarating and very positive. Once again its a pleasure get...ting involved in making peoples lives better! Photography by Rob Frith, Acorn Photography. @ Wickham

18.01.2022 Kukame, our design director at GA in Perth enjoyed joining Monique Woodward from WOWOWA and the crew from Arcadia Design Studio in presenting at the very first @aca.org.au BOSP (Business of Small Practice) get together. With everyone sharing ideas about innovative and less traditional models of running small to mid-size practice, the event generated confidence in sustaining architectural practice in these challenging times. Good stuff! Congrats to @whisperingsmitharchitecture and @msgarchitecture for organising such a successful event. #businessofsmallpractice #businessofarchitecture #smallpracticearchitects #architects_wa #pertharchitects

17.01.2022 Great to be featured! Thanks Memories of Bunbury.

14.01.2022 It was great to be part the ABC Focus program with Jess Strutt and Fred Chaney this morning, discussing the new Design WA policy. We know that people are very concerned about density and infill in Perth: some of the callers mentioned security and crime; the quality of buildings and how they look; the loss of trees and greenspace; issues around parking; and the difficulties that sometimes arise from living in closer proximity to neighbours. We think that Design WA and the new ...apartment guidelines will address these concerns, and improve outcomes for the people who live in apartments and surrounding neighbours. On air, and borrowing from @duckdownunder, Phil said This is not about buildings, this is about people, and we strongly believe that better design outcomes will have many benefits for all of us. Theyll boost sustainability outcomes, strengthen communities, provide access to public transport, increase housing choice for young people and empty nesters, and more. Design WA is a great initiative for WA and Gresley Abas was pleased to be involved in writing the DRAFT apartment guidelines. Phil told Jess who lives near him in @CityofBayswater that hed be happy to help her with a design consult, and at @GresleyAbas we are keen to work with landowners, clients and developers to produce better infill and higher density apartments, to improve housing quality in Perth. Please get in touch! #designwa #multires#multiresidentialarchitecture#architecture #design#architecturematters#valueofarchitecture#australianarchitecture#architectureanddesign #waarchitects#waarchitecture#architecturewesternaustralia#pertharchitects #pertharchitecture#interiordesign #perthcity#lifeonthestreet #urbanplanning#urbandesign #perthisok #infill#infilldevelopment #designquality#designqualityperth #apartmentdesign#makingplaces #makingcommunities#placemaking #designexperts

09.01.2022 Mandurah snags international recognition Our Old Mandurah Traffic Bridge project in WA has been shortlisted for the UKs 2018 IStructE Structural Awards in the Award for Vehicle Bridges category the only Australian bridge to make the cut! Taking place on Friday 16 November at The Brewery in London, the Structural Awards will showcase the worlds most cutting edge engineering achievements.... Our team is up against three other projects the Queensferry Crossing in Edinburgh, the River Irwell Crossing in Manchester and the Tamina Canyon Crossing in St. Gallen, Switzerland. All projects are reviewed by a panel of world-renowned judges, who were notably impressed with Mandurahs unique design. The judges were delighted by the simple elegance of this attractive but unusual concrete box girder design. The curvature of the plan form and soffit cross section has been well conceived and detailed to create a very pleasing solution. The engineers have turned what could have been an ordinary, mediocre and dull bridge into something delightful, and have thereby created a popular new landmark for the city of Mandurah. Staying in the UK, Mandurah Bridge has also been shortlisted for the 10th annual World Demolition Awards in Dublin, Ireland! Nominated for the Civils Demolition Category, Georgiou and subcontractor Mainline Demolition will be heading to Aviva Stadium in early November to face off against international competition. With 48 projects and more than 30 countries vying for first place, the competition will be fierce watch this space!

08.01.2022 A great interview with Ahmad and Emily from GA, and Gregory Burgess about the recently completed Wunggurrwill Dhurrung project in Victoria!

08.01.2022 Wunggurrwil Dhurrung means strong heart in Wathaurong. First Nations Communities in the west of Melbourne had been meeting and advocating for many years for a culturally safe space to support celebration, healing, health and well-being. The design team were appointed after a rigorous selection process and began work in 2016, about 5 years after the project was seeded. Over several months the design team, under the leadership of the steering committee (now the Koling Wada Ng...al Committee) consulted widely with stakeholders, community members, Traditional Owners, elders, and non-Aboriginal Community members, as well as services who would operate at the centre. The team listened deeply, providing design responses at each stage to test the understanding of what was being shared. Our role was to support and express the communities greatest aspirations in every element of the built form - programme, relationships, materiality, and form. #Wunggurrwildhurrung #gregoryburgessarchitects #gbcaus #GreenBuildingCouncilofAustralia #VICAwards2020 #VICarchitectureawards #vicarchitecture #architecture #design #architectureaward #AustralianInstituteofArchitects #designexcellence #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #melbourne #sustainable

03.01.2022 At the start of the year, along with over 500 architects around the country, we shared out commitment to going carbon neutral in 2020. We acknowledge that a lot has happened since then, however its important to remain committed to getting our own house in order. In January, the first step to switch to 100% accredited GreenPower. The next step is to start a carbon audit by June 30. 03.01.2022 Gresley Abas, Gregory Burgess and @connorpincusgroup worked closely with the client to assess the most appropriate energy and ESD strategies for the project within the budget constraints. The centre is designed to optimise natural light with extensive clerestories, provide outdoor circulation and minimise HVAC to internal circulation areas, and optimise natural ventilation paths through the building. Roof-mounted PVCs and battery storage generate renewable energy, and rainwat...er is used for cistern supply. Rainwater not used within the building is collected in tanks that activate the network of ephemeral creeks and waterways to sustain an endemically planted landscape by #realmstudios. Wunggurrwil Dhurrung has achieved a 5 Star Green Star - Design and As Built V1.1 certified rating. #Wunggurrwildhurrung #gregoryburgessarchitects #gbcaus #GreenBuildingCouncilofAustralia #VICAwards2020 #VICarchitectureawards #vicarchitecture #architecture #design #architectureaward #AustralianInstituteofArchitects #institute_architects_aus #designexcellence #architecturephotography #architecturelovers #archdaily #melbourne #sustainable #awards #5star #5StarGreenStar
