25.01.2022 Ruby is a very good natured, gentle, happy and calm girl On her first day in foster care, she went in and just made herself comfortable after exploring the home to make sure everything was to her satisfaction. A ready-made pet. Ruby walks well on the leash, doesn't pull or get easily excited, and walks calmly past other dogs, giving a tail wag and sniff if they wish to say hello. She travels well in the car, is house-trained, and loves her food.... A mother herself, Ruby is comfortable with young children, and will make a wonderful family pet for some lucky person. Ruby is having some corns removed from her feet on Wednesday, July 1, and will need some tender care whilst recovering, as her current foster carer is unable to look after her after that date. If you can help out by either adopting or fostering with intention to adopt this beautiful girl, please email either Julie - [email protected], or Christina - [email protected] Ruby is not cat tolerant.

25.01.2022 A Taste of Retirement cookies initiative of Mel at Sandown Veterinary Clinic. We couldn't be more proud that Mel chose us as her charity. We couldn't be more pleased that Mel and her colleagues at Sandown (including those on the desk - no hard sell - just a quiet suggestion that if your dog has had an unpleasant prod or poke, that it might enjoy a treat) have raised OVER $1,000 for Greyhound Safety Net. You are so wonderful, we can never thank you enough. (And neither can the doggies, we hear stories of them feigning a limp to get back to the clinic to get some more yummy cookies). xxx

24.01.2022 Separation anxiety In the past couple of months, you may have been working from home, stood down for the duration of the shutdown or lost your job (in which case we are really sorry). But whatever our stories, as we start to return to the outside world, our dogs may suddenly ‘lose’ their most beloved humans for most of the day, who they have recently had right by their side. Before you return to work, please consider that some dogs will suffer separation anxiety, some ...for the first time in their lives. Even if they came into a working household with people out for many hours a day, through recent events they may have thoroughly acclimatised to having human company all day every day. Dr Kate Mornement is a highly-respected animal behaviourist and trainer. She provides several tips on her Facebook page Pets Behaving Badly - Solutions with Dr Kate. If you are interested, she also has a guide on separation anxiety to purchase through her website https://www.petsbehavingbadly.com.au/dogs/ ABC Life also published an interesting online article on how to prepare your pets for when you go back to work https://www.abc.net.au//preparing-your-pet-to-go-/12237394 Finally Pet Rescue have also provided some tips at https://www.petrescue.com.au//here-are-some-simple-separat? We hope you have a smooth and safe transition back to work, but a bit of preparation and planning might make things a lot easier for our four-legged friends. If you have returned to work and found some things that worked for your dog, or if you have experience of a dog with separation anxiety, please share your thoughts and ideas so we can all help our dogs during this transition time. P.S. Despite that it can apparently work for some other dogs, Greyhound Safety Net does not recommend crate training for greyhounds as we find many of them are phobic about enclosed spaces and will panic if put in a crate, no matter how short the time.

24.01.2022 The thoroughly compassionate American dog trainer Suzanne Clothier made the following observation about challenges in training dogs, in her book Connection Collection, in the Chapter Hard to Train? "The greater the distance X is from Z, The more you will have to explain Y. X = Desired behaviour... Z = Genetically programmed behaviour Y = WHY? In other words, it’s not difficult to get a retriever to retrieve, a herding dog to herd, or a Siberian to run. But, you better have some pretty good answers when you send a Greyhound out to retrieve a duck in icy waters!" We were reminded of her example with the recent downpours in Melbourne, with so many greyhounds (despite some liking their clam shell pools or the beach in hot weather) refusing to go outside last Friday lest they encounter a wet blade of grass or (*gasp*) have to walk through a puddle.

22.01.2022 Kingston Pet Expo to be held in April has been cancelled.

22.01.2022 Wonderful to see Babloo settled with his Lynbrook Vet family.

20.01.2022 As we move into lockdown again we know we will all use the opportunity to enjoy the treasured companionship of our greyhounds, and we know they won’t object to the extra company at home. Molly Rose recently adopted Betsy, who has settled in very well. Happily for beautiful Betsy she’s probably about to see quite a bit more of Molly Rose in the next 5 days. Take care, fellow Victorians, hug your dogs and hang on in there. xx

20.01.2022 So good to see a successful racer pass his cat test with flying colours. Laurel (yes, he's a boy, named after Laurel of Laurel and Hardy fame) met Skittles and the kitty-testing crew today and couldn't have been less interested. He was far more interested in the humans, including his almost namesake Lauren. He has a lovely home lined up for him, so - as long as they can manage his phobia of floorboards and tiles - he should live happily ever after. Well done, you gorgeous boy.

19.01.2022 Happy 3rd birthday foster dog Dozer!!! Dozer came into GSN early December and into foster care just before Christmas. She is still working out what this pet world is all about but she follows her foster carers around their house, poking them with her nose just testing that they are really real and not a figment of her imagination? We have sighted several smiles (it’s always lovely when a greyhound grins at you, so happy with what they are discovering) and she is up for a go...od snogging, if you let your face get within the range of her tongue. She hasn’t had a huge exposure to the ‘real world’(i.e. the non-racing world) but she is ready and willing to embrace a new life. She is underweight and needs to put on several kgs (sadly, the reverse of most of us) but loves her food and eats quite delicately even though she will stand on her foster carers' laps to see if they are willing to share their food! Adoption applications will shortly be open for Dozer. Her Microchip number is 956000004909998 and GSN’s Pet Exchange Register Source Number is RE100952.

19.01.2022 For all our friends and supporters, and all the greyhounds who have found their forever homes this year, or in years past, or are patiently waiting for a new home in 2021, we hope you enjoy Olive's introduction to Christmas. Greyhound Safety Net wishes you all a safe and happy Christmas, and a 2021 that is nothing like 2020! (with thanks to Natalie Powell, please check out her other videos of Olive on You Tube). xx

19.01.2022 We all know how greyhounds love to sleep .. nap .. doze .. slumber .. snooze .. kip .. sleep perchance to dream (of bunnies?). Foster dog Howdy decided he’d mastered all the canine variations, so he was prepared to try a human version. And how about that? He mastered that too.

18.01.2022 Knox Pets in the Park event is on next Sunday, 15th March. Please come along and join us at our marquee with your greyhounds and share your love and knowledge of greyhounds, so more people will adopt and foster. If you can attend, please let me know by email [email protected] Would love to see as many greys as possible.

17.01.2022 To bring some joy as we are about to enter day 3 of the 5 day lockdown, we are sharing a video we have meant to share for some time. So often we are knee (or neck) deep in rescuing and rehoming greyhounds that we don’t manage to stop and appreciate the wonderful posts we receive from our adopters and supporters. This video was compiled by Peter Roupas, who along with wife Karen and golden retriever Holly, adopted Joe (the white with black greyhound featured in the video in a red bow tie), a beautiful older boy who touched so many hearts in GSN. Thank you so much Peter for your inspirational video. xxx

16.01.2022 Good news story This is wonderful Winnie, a pretty, friendly girl who, at just 2 years old seemingly had her whole life ahead of her. However a lump on a rear hind leg was detected, then removed and tested. It was found to be a dreaded mast cell tumour, one of the most awful cancers around. Multiple consults with a number of vets and it was finally decided her best chance of a long and healthy life was to have the leg amputated. We’ve all seen amputee greyhounds (a...nd other breeds) who cope beautifully on 3 legs, but it is always a great worry to take a leg off a greyhound, fearing how they’ll cope. Well, Winnie had her surgery in June and look at her now (see video). You have to count her legs really quickly as she sprints and darts around and, yes there are only 3, not 4. She brings a huge smile to the faces of everyone who meets her. Our great thanks to Jordan who is fostering Winnie, under the caring guidance of her mum, vet nurse Mel Tochner of Sandown Veterinary Clinic. Note - We are taking adoption applications for this very special girl - if you are interested please fill out our application at www.greyhoundsafetynet.org Pet Exchange Register Source Number: RE100952 Microchip Number: 956000009434484

16.01.2022 In these strange and uncertain times, it’s good to share a good news story. Despite greyhounds having a well-earned reputation for their good nature and amiability, still very few are a just-add-water-insta-pet. But the ones that need the most help, and require the most patience, are the ‘timids.’ These dogs are beyond shy, they usually haven’t been socialised and have never learned to trust humans. They are a huge challenge to their foster carers and then their adopters be...cause learning to trust has to be done at their pace and it takes a lot of time - you have to earn their trust. In 2018 Bec and Adam and their two girls opened their hearts to Lucca, an extremely timid boy who became a loving companion to their family, including their cat and their other dog Possum. Then tragically, last year Possum died and the family needed a cat-friendly companion for Lucca. Most greyhounds aren’t safe around cats but the timids are often good candidates because a) they usually fail at racing because they won’t chase and b) they are scared of their own shadows so they are more likely to be afraid of the cat until they learn the cat is friendly! Long story short, while actually looking for an outgoing dog to sustain Lucca’s growing confidence, they met the timid cat-friendly Nala and opened their hearts and home to her too. Nala wasn’t as bad as Lucca but she definitely needed time to learn to trust. She found the girls (lovely, quiet children) terrifying at first, so that was a whole new challenge for her and the family. And for Lucca and Nala it wasn’t love at first sight either their love story was a slow-burner but now they are totally bonded with each other. Now, with the family working and schooling at home, the dogs couldn’t be happier. Bec sent an update this morning ‘Thank goodness for our greys! They make being home so much more fun. And my, have they hit another level of comfort!’ We just love this story. :) If you want to share too, we’d love to see photos of your greyhounds enjoying the shutdown.

14.01.2022 Living their best lives ... xxx

13.01.2022 To all houndies and their humans, everyone associated with Greyhound Safety Net wishes you a very safe and happy festive season. We mourn the beloved greys who have gone to the rainbow bridge this year, we celebrate the greys who have found 'the one' (family) this year and we wish all ex- racers a loving home in 2021. We hope you will join us, and all the other rescue and rehoming groups, on that journey. Stay safe, take care and let's all hope for a better 2021 than 2020.

12.01.2022 Not even the difficulties of the current times, and how busy they are with all their clients, can stop the lovely staff at Sandown Veterinary Clinic helping out Greyhound Safety Net. If you are down that way, buy some cookies (though do note their opening hours have been reduced to implement stringent cleaning protocols at the end of each day).

11.01.2022 Celebrating Volunteers' Week, we would like to thank all of those who volunteer for Greyhound Safety Net in all ways... whether it is fostering, helping out with promotions, doing home checks, or any of the other ways which help find these wonderful greyhounds new homes and new lives.

10.01.2022 This is a story from one of our long term foster carers. Foster carers are the life-blood of GSN as they are the people who enable precious greyhounds to make their way from kennel to couch. GSN recognises its foster carers as the ‘vital link in the rescue chain.’ A Christmas fostering story - a tale (tail) of three foster dogs. This time last year we introduced our then foster dog Lily to what turned out to be her perfect forever family. Lily was not many people’s image of a...Continue reading

10.01.2022 2021 Diaries - the second shipment has arrived due to the demand, and there are still some left. Please email Christina @ [email protected] with your orders. They can be sent out by Express Post for a small extra cost to make sure they arrive by Christmas if orders are received by Monday 21st December, otherwise you can order as normal and they should arrive in time for the New Year.

10.01.2022 Anyone who has attended a Greyhound Safety Net event will remember one of our best representatives, Lilli. While Lilli’s breeding was standard poodle, as soon as Christina and Martyn introduced greyhounds Willow and then Mai, into their household, Lilli signed up for team-greyhound. From then on she attended almost all Greyhound Safety Net events as our rare curly coated greyhound. Lilli reached a magnificent 15 years old, but sadly last week, old age caught up with this gran...d lady. While Lilli has gone to the rainbow bridge, we will always have the softest place in our hearts for our curly coated greyhound mascot. Our sincerest condolences to Christina, Martyn and Willow. Lilli is pictured here, with sisters Willow and Mai, representing GSN at the Royal Melbourne Show; supervising Mum Christina at our merchandise stall at a Winter Warmer at Lang Lang, and finally, showing one of her many talents - waving. Vale Lilli xxx

09.01.2022 Could anyone who has had a dog door suitable for greyhounds installed please post where they got it from? Enquiry from new adopter. Christina

08.01.2022 Lovely Lena is Looking for Love Lovely Lena is a special dog who needs a special family homebodies with another large dog who are happy to give her time to learn to trust them; no kids or barky dogs as she would find these frightening. Lena has been gaining in confidence in foster care but needs a forever family of her own. She is a very sweet girl, house trained and has learned to ‘stand’, ‘heel’ and ‘sit’ (clever girl not many greyhounds do). ... She loves a walk with her foster siblings, but somewhere quiet where there aren’t lots of people or other dogs. No long country drives, as she does not enjoy car rides at all. We know Lena is not for those who want a cruisy dog, but we also know there will be loving and kind people out there who are prepared to give her the love she deserves. Please fill in our application form (on our website) if you think you might be the love of Lena’s life. M/C 956000003750308 Pet Exchange register no. RE100952

07.01.2022 IMPORTANT For those of you who had kindly offered to attend Knox Pet Show on Sunday, please be advised that the event has been CANCELLED.

06.01.2022 Some beautiful items available to raise funds for all greyhound rescue groups. Please support.

05.01.2022 2021 Diary Due to the inability to hold promotions or functions this year, we have decided to produce an A5 sized diary instead of our usual calendars, which will be more practical to post out. The theme of this diary is - Those Amazing Greyhound Ears. We all know that greyhounds have many quirky traits peculiar to their breed, but one of the most endearing would have to be their quirky ears. With over a dozen muscles in each, a greyhound's ears are one of their most importan...t sensory tools. They can also use them to express a range of emotions or, alternatively, they are just totally out of control! This diary features some of the wonderful photos donated by adopters of GSN greyhounds. With a different photo for each week, we hope you enjoy looking through the many different ways that our hounds show their personalities. Price, including postage, is just $16. Please visit our website for order and payment details. http://www.greyhoundsafetynet.org/greyhound-collars-harness

05.01.2022 Desperately looking for foster carers for brother and sister, Toby and Barbie. They are five years old, and do not need to be fostered together. Their previous foster carer has had a change in her circumstances, and cannot keep them after this Thursday. Could anyone please help with fostering?

02.01.2022 Received this beautiful message and pic from Lee Sheridan. So lovely to see the oldies continuing to love life xxx Just thought I would send this happy pic of Tara. We adopted her at 9 years ago from you. She is almost 14 now, and quite frail. But still happy. We know we wont have her for much longer, but cherish having her, and making her days enjoyable. Beautiful, kind and loyal old girl.

02.01.2022 As a rescue group that takes in dogs that sometimes struggle adapting to pet life, we have been hugely supported by Tamara and her colleagues at Underdog Training. They are totally professional and compassionate in helping dogs become their best selves. So when they sent out this offer of providing a daily training video via a closed Facebook group, it was too good not to send out for our followers to consider. Please note the special deal of $30 for 8 week’s subscription end...s Monday so if you are going to subscribe, do it ASAP to get the special deal. For those of us (and our dogs) stuck at home going stir crazy, this could be a fantastic way of keeping both you and your dog occupied, have some fun and learn some things. In their note to us Underdog mentioned their concerns for dogs from the effects of isolation, changes to routine and understandable owner anxiety. The information about the offer can be found here https://underdogtraining.com.au/underdoga-daily-dog-launch/ Take care all.

01.01.2022 With some of us doing online yoga at home, the greyhounds are getting into the act (practising doga?). With repeated attempts, Debbie has almost got the downward facing dog pose down pat (although it’s a yoga mat fail).
