Medium: ink on paper Artist Statement: Since the start of lockdown, I have reverted to the first art forms I ever learnt. My dad taught me calligraphy as a child, but it was something I stopped doing in my teenage years. After a 25-year break, I’ve picked up the old brush again and it’s like I never stopped. Muscle memory takes over and all the art I’ve made in the last 20 years flows through meit’s something comforting and certain in an uncertain world. Vote for your favourite artwork before 5pm AWST on 29 Nov 2020. The artist who receives the highest number of votes will win $10,000 donated by the Baldock Family. One lucky WA voter will also win great prizes from AGWA Shop, The Montauk Lighting Co. and Home Base Perth. The People's Choice Prize winning artist and voter will be announced 2 Dec 2020. 22.01.2022 THE LESTER PRIZE | ATELIER-VISION a social media takeover by LORI PENSINI | Part 2 of 3 In the face of a crippling pandemic, reflect and reconnect would be my summation for 2020. I have reasoned inwards. Family past and present holds heart and head and echoes in my artwork through the introduction of children metamorphosing into botanical forms, entwined as blossom sprays, wildflowers and such. My family stories of shared cultures have also been a source of strength and an ...illuminating force. 20.01.2022 How the Art World Is Changing for the Better // Peopleand artare resilient. Right now it might seem like the news is always bad, but sometimes the darkest of times shine a light on the brightest of artists. Think of the art movements that emerged out of the World Wars, or out of the turmoil of the 1960s or the Cold War. In this article, Artzine talks about a few ways the art world is changing for the better:... * Going online - the democratisation of sales; connecting artists to audiences; access to education; * Bridging art and science * Going green * A move toward interiors and emotion * The emergence of new voices and innovation We are enouraged to take heartwhether the news is bad or good, art will continue to evolve, grow, and inspire. #repost #artzine #Artimproveslives #artinquarantine http://ow.ly/Kr3650BOWxO

19.01.2022 THE LESTER PRIZE | ATELIER-VISION a social media takeover by LORI PENSINI | Part 3 of 3 The landscape is my mentor. She generates a meditative balance of mind and body I am boundlessly grateful for. I walk most evenings through our bush on the farm, somedays she is teacher, I am present to everything and all my senses are heightened. And then on other days, she is more guide, I can’t recall where I’ve walked or how far - I am so completely lost in the storybook of my mind. ...Memories unwind like ribbons of tape and flutter haplessly with no order, they bewilderingly form prisms of inspiration on my returning to the studio. 19.01.2022 THE LESTER PRIZE | ATELIER-VISION a social media takeover by CLAIRE BRIDGE | Part 1 of 3 Biography: Claire Bridge is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice includes ceramic sculpture, video, textiles, painting and installation. Her work engages with marginalised voices, gender, ancestral transmissions, environmental and human ecologies. Bridge’s work addresses paradigms of power while exploring opportunities for repair and sustainable future worlding. Growing institutiona...l appreciation for Bridge’s work is attested by her inclusion in Manic, The Big Anxiety Festival at the UNSW 2019, Erasure, CoVA curated by Nur Shkembi, Network, Art Gallery of Ballarat, the nationally toured Fecund: Fertile Worlds, Artback NT, and Confluence at Counihan Gallery. I have a great love of painting. While my practice has evolved dramatically into an interdisciplinary practice, it is informed by the sensitivities developed over years of paying attention & slow listening required of realist painting. Listening with the eyes & with the body. ‘Sanctuary’, a portrait of Deaf Dramaturg & performer, Medina Straub, speaks to mindful & embodied listening. In our current pandemic impacted world where it seems nowhere is safe finding sanctuary has even greater significance. Where do we find & create sanctuary - for ourselves, others & our earth? I am currently working with deaf artist, Chelle Destefano & the deaf community on our collaborative project What I Wish I’d Told You, proudly supported by City of Melbourne, Creative Victoria & Australia Council for the Arts. 18.01.2022 THE LESTER PRIZE | ATELIER-VISION a social media takeover by ANDY QUILTY | 1 of 3 Biography: Andy Quilty is a multi-disciplinary artist; lecturer in Fine Arts at The University of Western Australia; program patron for the Military Art Program Australia, a non-profit assisting military veterans through art therapy; and works across the state facilitating art workshops in schools, penal institutions, community groups and Aboriginal art centres.... This year, I’ve chosen to temporarily sideline my personal artmaking to focus on other commitments including renovating my childhood home, which my wife Eva and I bought at the end of 2019; and looking after our 2-year-old son, Alby on my days off with Eva resuming full-time work. Studio time has been replaced with other art-related activities such as drawing with Alby; hanging our art collection in the new house; working on a pilot program for primary school students with education staff at the Art Gallery of WA; and developing a new drawing, painting and print unit at The University of Western Australia where I lecture in the Fine Arts program. Images clockwise from top left: 1. Alby drawing at home. 2. Renos. 3. Working with a UWA Fine Arts & History of Art student in the print room at UWA School of Design. Photo by Ian and Erick Regnard. 4. Alby camouflaged in front of his favourite painting by my good mate, rising art star and Martu artist, ‘Bamba’ Corban Williams Clause from Martumili Artists This work was from Bamba’s first solo exhibition and was purchased with money I won in an art prize. Any time I win an art prize, I use the money to either buy another artist’s work or put the money back into my art practice, I think of it as strictly art dollars! #lesterprize #faceofinspiration #ateliervision #TLPalumni #artisttakeover Andy Quilty Twine - Ideas That Bind

16.01.2022 THE LESTER PRIZE | 2020 PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD - CAST YOUR VOTE Artist: Wade Taylor Title: Ramesh Subject: Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran... Medium: oil and acrylic on wood Artist Statement: I met Ramesh at his Perth Festival show of large-scale ceramic sculptures entitled Idols. Maybe he was a bit of an idol for meI admired Ramesh’s work for the immediacy and instinctiveness of his approach, the sculptures were anarchic and a little nutty. His paintings also contained a textural, haptic quality. They encouraged accident, impulse and feeling. Being an artist, I fancied painting in the same way, or I would at least try. We hung out, struck up a friendship and continued chatting over the year. Ramesh recently suggested that I paint a portrait of himI told him that was silly as I’m not a portraitist. Vote for your favourite artwork before 5pm AWST on 29 Nov 2020. The artist who receives the highest number of votes will win $10,000 donated by the Baldock Family. There are tons of different ways to get your art in front of a larger audience, and YouTube is only one of many options! What methods of promotion are you exploring and what has worked for you? This article by Empty Easel suggests asking yourself these questions before you get started: 1. Do you have the time? 2. Do you have something unique to talk about? 3. 12.01.2022 Yowshien Kuo’s Cowboy Paintings Challenge Whitewashed Portrayals of the American West // Yowshien Kuo’s paintings are filled with rattlesnakes, gallon hats, and other yeehaw imagery, but there are no white cowboys here. Instead, we see Asian men: shooting guns with their tongues out; wrangling game; or relaxing in their backyards, as horses run wild and an apple pie steams in the window. In the 1800s, an estimated one-third of cowboys were Mexican vaqueros and another quarte...r were Black. Many frontier towns were built using Chinese immigrant labor, too, but Hollywood depictions of the Old West don't reflect this diversity. His latest collection "goes to where I felt excluded the most, Kuo explained in an interview over Zoom, pointing to the myth at the heart of American storytelling. #repost #artsy #YowshienKuo #diversityinart http://ow.ly/LKLW50Bvp1T

10.01.2022 THE LESTER PRIZE | ATELIER-VISION a social media takeover by ANDY QUILTY | 3 of 3 Prior to the self-imposed hiatus from making art, I developed a large series of drypoint prints of our 2-year-old son, Alby. Drypoint is an intaglio printing process that involves scratching a plate to make a drawing, inking up the plate and taking a print from it. ... These are a couple of my favourite works from that series alongside the daily ritual of Alby drawing at the kitchen table. 08.01.2022 It’s likely that Leonardo da Vinci used round paintbrushes made from animal hair tied to the end of wooden handles. The same can be said for Rembrandt, Johannes Vermeer, and countless other painters in the Western world, up until the 19th century. Change came with the invention of the metal ferrulea small, ring-shaped object that fastens a brush’s bristles and handle together. The innovation allowed manufacturers to create revolutionary new brush shapes, each of which could... create a different array of marks. By squashing the bristle end of the ferrule, for example, manufacturers could create flat brushes, which were embraced by the Impressionists, and have become a mainstay in artists’ studios today. Modern-day paintbrushes come in many shapes, sizes, and bristle typesand all of these qualities can be either an aid or an impediment to an artist, depending on their desired results. This article by Artsy may help you to navigate the wide variety of paintbrushes on the market - a few of the most common types and what they can be used for: http://ow.ly/DtQH50BvomR Are you experimenting with your mark-making and paint consistency at the moment? 06.01.2022 THE LESTER PRIZE | MAIN AWARDS PRIZE WINNERS PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD We are thrilled to announce that Queensland artist Jess Le Clerc has won The Lester Prize $10,000 People’s Choice Award donated by the Baldock Family. Jess's work received the highest number of votes by the Australian public.... Artist: Jess Le Clerc Title: Shadow and bloom Subject: Eden Le Clerc, Jewel Le Clerc and Summer Le Clerc Medium: oil on canvas Size: 76 x 102 cm Artist Statement: ‘Shadow and bloom’ is a portrait of my three daughtersEden, Jewel and Summer. One day, I watched them jump into the dam by our house. They were playing in the calm waters with the blooms while being drawn in by the shadows of the murky waters. "To win the People’s Choice Award and to know the public enjoyed standing in front of the painting means more than anything. As a portrait painter, it’s my goal to hold the beauty of humanity in suspension for just a momentto allow people to feel the love and connection they have for each other. Painting portraits is a beautiful and ancient method of making us appreciate humanity more. These wild girls of mine that I painted haven’t yet done anything noteworthy in the world, yet they live life like a day is all there is, and to me this is noteworthy. I wanted to show some of that wildness that we all want to remember and that is still inside each one of us." 05.01.2022 THE LESTER PRIZE | 2020 PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD - CAST YOUR VOTE Artist: Jill Talbot Title: Redundancy package with Ikea cushions and Netflix Subject: Self-portrait... Medium: oil on Perspex Artist Statement: Female, over sixty, made redundantnot the trifecta I was aiming for. After 25 years teaching in the visual arts sector, I received a handshake and a push towards the door in 2019. No stranger to professional identity struggles within the creative and cultural landscape, I felt equipped to deal with the ensuing change in pace, to navigate the crossroads of redundancy versus renewal, and to grapple with the big questions now looming over the horizon. I have mostly resisted the urge to kick back on the couch, and usually dress as if going to work, finding it reassuring to apply lipstick and foundation. My self-portrait documents this piecing together of my useful face, as it were. Vote for your favourite work by 5pm AWST on 29 Nov. 04.01.2022 THE LESTER PRIZE // THE ART OF GIVING Celebrating our valued sponsors ART GALLERY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA... We welcome The Lester Prize exhibition at AGWA in 2020 which marks its fifth year showing at the Gallery. The significant number of entries received during a challenging year is a testament that the Prize continues to establish itself as one of the country’s most prestigious portraiture prizes. I look forward to seeing the selection of works and to hearing the personal narratives that have influenced the artists’ portraiture as I’m sure the rest of the community is. 01.01.2022 THE LESTER PRIZE | ATELIER-VISION a social media takeover by LORI PENSINI | Part 1 of 3 Biography: Lori draws on her ancestral heritage of 8th generation grazier with botanical and animal forms a prominent and intrinsic part of her art practice. The exploration of the relationship between man and his environment and the shaping of both, both constructive and ruinous is a constant thread and deliberation. In recent years, her work has consolidated to explore the recently disco...vered aboriginal lineage to her pioneering family tree, which excitingly continues to add to the jigsaw of her being and comprehension of the form her paintings take. I am a narrative figurative painter using botanicals as metaphors to portray characters. Stories are woven using a language of flowers personal to my own ancestry and historical chronicles. In the above works, the banksia totems represent inner strength and the wattle, family and the characters that have gone into our shaping. They are a-typical examples and essentially form the foundation of my belief, that as sentient beings it is crucial for our mental and physical prosperity that we are connected to the natural world and environment. 01.01.2022 THE LESTER PRIZE | 2020 PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD - CAST YOUR VOTE Artist: Zoë Sydney Title: Fifteen Subject: William Sydney... Medium: oil on canvas Artist Statement: Fifteen is a memorable age for manya turning point between childhood and adulthood. Fifteen depicts my brother, William blowing out the candles on his fifteenth birthday cake. For him, it will be remembered as the year we had to celebrate in lockdown. Like the fifteen candles flickering in focus in the portrait’s foreground, these celebrations are the lights in the darkness of a hard, few months. At fifteen, we all felt the murky uncertainty of the future. Today's generation, even more so, are struggling in this darkness. My brother’s face, out of focus as he blows out the candles, symbolises the shifts in identity that we all experience as teenagers. Vote for your favourite artwork by 5pm AWST on 29 Nov. 01.01.2022 THE LESTER PRIZE | ATELIER-VISION a social media takeover by ANDY QUILTY | 2 of 3 An ongoing interest in my art practice is investigating the aesthetic and conceptual possibilities of automotive burnouts. These works identify the automotive burnout as a socio-economic geographic indicator within residential environments and allegorical post-colonial marking of territory. Considered outside these cartographic notions, I’m also interested in the aesthetic possibilities of burno...uts as a kind of egalitarian, un-homogenised form of suburban artmaking. 01.01.2022 Fascinating piece from the NY Times on what we can learn from the art of pandemics past. From the playground game ring-around-the-rosy to the short stories of Edgar Allan Poe, the scars of illnesses throughout history are still visible in the today. The 2020 pandemic will change the way we see art forever, too, and artists and writers have already begun doing the work of illuminating new shifts and losses, documenting the small kindnesses and cruelties, the large failures of ...leadership, technology and society. One thing seems certain: We will never look at ourselves as a culture in the same way again.
