23.01.2022 **Update @ 5.35pm - The Huon Highway at Grove is now open, with lowered speed limits in place in the area for the next hour to hour and a half. _________ Earlie...r: Huon Highway motorists are advised that the Highway is currently closed at Grove while crash investigators examine the scene of an earlier serious crash. The road will be closed for around half an hour, followed by a reduced speed zone for a further hour and a half.

21.01.2022 Carbon Monoxide Warning Tasmanians are reminded of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning from using fuel-burning heating or cooking appliances inside or i...n poorly ventilated areas. Unfortunately, every year there are several hospital presentations in Tasmania due to carbon monoxide poisoning. An incident occurred in South Hobart overnight where 11 people including nine children were hospitalised due to carbon monoxide poisoning. You cannot see, taste or smell carbon monoxide, but it can kill within a few minutes. Never use outdoor barbecues, charcoal grills, portable gas, heat-bead stoves, or generators indoors. Don’t use them in other enclosed spaces like caravans or boat cabins. Any kind of burning fuel makes dangerous gases, including carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide poisoning causes headaches, nausea, dizziness, fainting, shortness of breath and confusion. If you suspect gas poisoning immediately get everyone outside and call Triple Zero (000) and ask for an ambulance. Be safe with heating and cooking: Never use a fuel burning or gas heater inside a house or other enclosed space, unless it has a flue or chimney. Only use heaters made for indoor use inside your home. Read and follow the instructions. Do not try to heat your home with a kitchen stove or oven, portable gas stove, heat bead stove or charcoal grill. Inside your home, only use kitchen stoves and ovens for cooking. Do not use an outdoor barbecue (BBQ), portable gas stove, camping stove, charcoal grill or heat-bead stove inside. 19.01.2022 With 14 serious injuries and three deaths occurring on our roads in the last two weeks alone, police and our emergency services counterparts at Tasmania Fire Se...rvice, Ambulance Tasmania and Tasmania SES are calling on Tasmanians to take road safety seriously. This year we’ve had 21 fatal and 155 serious injury crashes on our roads. In the same period last year, we had 17 fatalities and 143 serious injuries. These aren’t just statistics, each crash is at least one life that’s been taken, or irreversibly impacted. Police talk about the Fatal Five; speeding, not wearing seatbelts, alcohol and drugs, fatigue and distraction because people die on our roads for those reasons. Please slow down, wear your seatbelt, rest if you’re tired and don’t drive distracted or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. As always, police will be out patrolling roads across the state and enforcing our road rules, but we need Tasmanians to help us by doing their bit and keeping themselves and other road users safe. Some road safety tips: Never drive faster than the speed limit, and if conditions are wet, dark or frosty, slow down and travel at a speed that feels safe and allows plenty of time to stop quickly and safely. Be aware roads can become slippery and drive accordingly. Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead. Don’t allow distractions like mobile phones to affect your judgement and reaction times. Drive with headlights on when visibility is poor.

12.01.2022 Chimneys and flues that have not been properly maintained can catch fire, and these types of fires have already destroyed homes in Tasmania this year. These things can help reduce the risks associated with fireplaces and wood heaters: Have your chimney/flue professionally cleaned annually.... Only burn wood that has been properly seasoned/dried, so it burns hotter and produces less smoke. Place a fire screen in front of fireplaces. Put logs in lengthways so they can’t roll out. Keep anything flammable, including your woodpile, at least two metres from the fireplace. And most importantly, have smoke alarms installed in every sleeping area - that includes your shack, boat and caravan. 06.01.2022 Fatal Two Vehicle Collision Huon Highway, Grove 17/07/2020 An 88-year-old male from Huonville has died following a two-vehicle collision on the Huon Highway a...t Grove in the vicinity of the 1469 Huon Highway. The crash occurred at approximately 1.30pm after the male, who was driving a silver Toyota Yaris failed to negotiate a right-hand bend in the road whilst travelling north towards Kingston. Initial investigations suggest that as the vehicle exited the right hand bend, the driver continued with right hand steering input causing the vehicle to cross into the path of a south bound Volkswagen Station wagon. Impact between the two-vehicle occurred in the south bound lane said Acting Sergeant Hall of Crash Investigation Services. The male was removed from the vehicle by SES and Ambulance Tasmania Paramedics however he died a short time later whilst being conveyed to the Royal Hobart Hospital. The 76-year-old female passenger in the vehicle was conveyed to the Royal Hobart Hospital with minor injuries only. The southbound black Volkswagen was being driven by a 50-year-old Risdon woman who had an adult male and two children in the vehicle at the time of the collision. All four occupants were uninjured. Speed or the use of alcohol or drugs is not suspected as being contributing factors in the collision. Investigations are continuing as to why the vehicle crossed to the incorrect side of the road said Acting Sergeant Hall. Police, Ambulance Tasmania, TFS and SES all attended the scene with the Huon Highway closed for approximately 45 minutes whilst Police Forensic and Crash Investigation Services personnel investigated the scene. Anyone who observed the vehicles prior to the collision is asked to contact Acting Sergeant Adam HALL at Southern Crash Investigation Services on 131444 or by contacting Crime Stoppers.

05.01.2022 Police are urging Tasmanians to take note of forecast weather warnings, with wet and icy conditions likely across the state overnight and tomorrow. The Bureau o...f Meteorology has issued warnings for road users and bushwalkers, and we need people to heed that advice. Wet conditions and ice and snow are on the way, which means our roads will be slippery and motorists will need to be extremely cautious. Strong and icy winds will also pose a serious risk to bushwalkers, so please reconsider if you were planning on doing a walk over the next few days. Police need Tasmanians to be sensible and to do what they can to keep themselves safe in these conditions. If you're travelling on the roads, remember: Never drive faster than the speed limit, and if conditions are wet, dark or frosty, slow down and travel at a speed that allows plenty of time to stop quickly and safely.
