22.01.2022 Water storages are absolutely essential infrastructure, not just for regional jobs and economies, but for ensuring we have healthy and fresh food sitting on the table in every Queensland home. They’re also essential for attracting overseas and interstate investment to Queensland. And yet a number of major horticultural regions across the State are struggling with expensive and insecure water. The Queensland Horticulture Council is calling on the next Queensland Government to ...commit to: - Maintaining and protecting existing water allocations and entitlements; - Removing dam safety costs from irrigation water pricing in perpetuity; and - Exploring and investing in local water infrastructure projects that have the support of regional growing associations and groups. 22.01.2022 Growcom has today welcomed two separate measures announced by the Federal Government designed to address the critical labour shortage facing the horticulture industry, but warned greater interventions were likely still required. The measures announced by the Federal Government include offering backpackers already in the country the option to extend their visas, and allowing Australians receiving JobSeeker to earn $300 each fortnight while working regionally without losing an...y of their payments. Whether being able to earn $150 per week in a regional location before losing welfare payments is going to act as the catalyst we need to fill the massive and immediate shortfall in labour is anyone’s guess. With time not on our side, the smarter approach would be to be far more generous with incentives up front, leaving room to dial them back should we get an overwhelming response.

18.01.2022 The Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) has serious concerns the state government is unfairly picking winners within the agriculture sector by further restricting the number of farmers who can access an election commitment to provide a 50 per cent price reduction for horticulture irrigation water users. While QFF welcomed the government’s announcement to reduce water prices for the state’s irrigators by at least 15 per cent, the peak agricultural body has questioned the decision to offer different discounts to different commodities and customers of different water providers.

14.01.2022 With automation poised to transform agriculture in Australia in the coming years, Monash University researchers have published the first-ever analysis of the ethical and policy issues raised by the use of robots in agriculture. The authors said with global and local food security facing profound challenges including climate change, soil depletion, loss of biodiversity, water scarcity and population growth, robots could help farmers confront these challenges by improving yield... and productivity, while reducing levels of fertiliser and pesticide use, as well as water wastage. However, they stated the widespread adoption of robots in farming could have negative consequences, including mismanagement of chemicals, soil compaction due to heavy robots and potential food wastage if consumers come to expect standardised or ‘perfect’ produce. This could also lead to further standardisation of breeding and creation via genetic modification of crops and livestock better suited to robotic harvest. There is also a fear that smaller or struggling farms could miss out on the technology and be unable to keep up, leading to a centralisation of ownership in agriculture.
