15.01.2022 This is a murmuration of starlings in the Coorong. This invasive species causes many problems for our native species due to competition for food and nest sites.... But ... their murmurations can be quite mesmerising as they form all manner of shapes! They apparently murmurate to confuse and evade predators and in the cooler climates they murmurate to keep warm. It is astounding that so many birds fly in these intricate flight paths in unison. The murmuration changes direction exceptionally fast and in many directions. To the naked eye, it appears the birds are very close together but in fact they have significant distance between each other so that they don't crash into other birds during their unpredictable flight movements.
