12.01.2022 On Friday, the Year 1s had the best day ever! They were visited by a team of engineers who specialise in using composites (carbon, fibre and glue) to repair various structures around Western Australia. They were presented with four problems and selected one that sparked their curiosity, forming teams and working alongside an engineer to come up with a plan of action. Each team was taught how to work safely with a variety of tools and materials, before using their creativity and problem solving skills to build a range of structures including bridges, windmills and boats. The students (and the engineers!) got a lot from the day!

Congratulations to all our students who demonstrated excellent team spirit and supported each other well!

06.01.2022 From the Archives Peter Pan (and a young Heath Ledger) The recent Junior Drama production of Peter Pan or ‘The Boy Who Would Never Grow Up’ by Sir James Matthew Barrie was first performed in 1904. ... James was born on 9 May 1860 in Scotland. He was the son of Scottish weavers and after graduating from the University of Edinburgh, moved to London to pursue his interest of becoming a playwright. James died on 19 June 1937 in London. As part of his legacy he gave the copyright for Peter Pan to a children’s hospital in London. The play was first performed at Guildford Grammar School on 5-7 November 1992 and starred a very young Heath Ledger (Prep/Woodbridge 1987-1996) as Peter Pan, Captain of the Lost Boys. Pippa Taylor from Perth College played Tinker Bell alongside Heath. Ms Gillian Kerr-Sheppard (staff 1989-1998), who directed the production, mentioned in her Director’s notes Peter Pan has been one of my favourites for a very long time. It must be the idea of Never Land, where everything is make-believe, and to fly, all you have to do is think of lovely wonderful thoughts. After all, life can be just like that, especially if you are a Drama teacher. 1992 was a year of magic and fairy tales, and where the DLD came alive. Children stared wide-eyed, called out advice to the actors, clapped and cried and came back for more, or in one or two cases, left in terror. He’s behind you Pan, get him! was often called out by the young audience. Some of the outstanding performers were Andrew Haak (He 1991-1995) as Mr Darling and James Turner (He 1988-1996) as Slightly. Captain Hook was ably performed by Alex Kerr-Sheppard (Fr 1989-1996) and Alex McEwen (Be 1983-1995) shone as Smee. The choreographer was Heather Callander and set design by Laurie Cook (staff 1989-1998) and Noel Moyes (staff 1987-1996) along with many of the Industrial Workshop students. Makeup was by Margie Gray, wife of Ted Gray (staff 1976-2005) and Danielle Mitchell. Mrs Maxine Farrell (Housemother, School House 1989-1990) and her group of wonderful parents took up residence in the sewing room to create the beautiful costumes. The backstage crew worked with dedication under the guidance of the Year 10 and 11 leaders. The two photos are of Heath Ledger and Pippa Taylor, part of the 1992 program with the full cast of the production. ROSEMARY WALLER ARCHIVIST

06.01.2022 A splash of sunshine on a rainy day! This stunning photo of our new boarding house project was taken by Year 10 student Charlie on her way to Stirling House this morning. 05.01.2022 Today is R U OK Day, when a conversation could change a life. This years key message focuses on follow up questions, because there is more to say after asking R U OK? To support this important message the School Psychologists are setting up Conversations Cafs on Chapel Close where students and staff can sit around caf tables and ask each other are you ok? while drinking free cordial in R U OK? cups and sharing a treat. The Arts Faculty are also performing an RUOK? Day... performance for the students during mentor. The key message this year is what to say after asking R U OK? Follow up questions such as Where do you think we can go from here?, What would be a good first step we can take?, What do you need from me? How can I help you right now?. You dont have to be an expert to have these conversations you just need to be there for the other person and listen to them. For more information on R U OK? Day please refer to https://www.ruok.org.au/

04.01.2022 Earlier this week The West published their picks for the PSA footy team of the season. The Guildford Grammar School selections are: Rhett Bazzo - Half-back "It comes as no surprise that theres a buzz about Rhett Bazzo. Another exciting draft prospect for next season, Bazzo is the best intercept-marking defender in the PSA and showed late in the season that he can have an impact up forward."... Elijah Hewett - Forward "Hewett is a lively type who can have an impact as a small forward or on the midfield. It has been a big year for the Guildford youngster, who also made his WAFL colts debut for Swan Districts Football Club and was selected in the WA 16s squad." Darcy Miller - Interchange "The hard running defender has got better by the week, with his performance in the final match against premiers Scotch the best of the lot. Regularly does team-first things and puts his body on the line, and doesnt mind taking on bigger opportunities." Emergencies: Mack Hall. The full article can be viewed by subscribers of The West Online. #psafootball #risingstar #dreamteam #afl

03.01.2022 With Mr Clark Wight moving into a new role across the whole school as Project Lead Innovation and Transformation, we are delighted to announce that Dr Holly Miller has been appointed to the position of Head of Preparatory School, commencing in 2021. Holly joined Guildford Grammar School in 2019 as our Deputy Head of Preparatory School from Christ Church Grammar School. Holly holds a Doctor of Education completed in 2017 and a Master of Education completed in 2010. A dy...namic & passionate educator, Holly has been instrumental in leading the development of the Preparatory Schools approach to rich, engaging learning and teaching opportunities that are shaped by the curiosity and imagination of our students. Holly is looking forward to continuing the Preparatory Schools focus on inquiry, that embraces student questions and interests, providing them with meaningful and authentic experiences to learn and grow. We are blessed with a stunning campus full of natural provocations for inquiry and learning. I have great admiration for the staff as they have worked hard to find opportunities to integrate the outdoors and natural spaces into teaching and learning programs and we look forward to continuing to build on this further, she said. The Guildford Grammar School community is very special, and I am thrilled to continue working with the students, families, staff and broader community members. We congratulate Holly on her appointment and look forward to the leadership, inspiration and excitement she will bring to this important role.

02.01.2022 HMS PINAFORE 1970 Due to the outstanding success of Trial by Jury in 1969 it was decided to produce another Gilbert and Sullivan opera for 1970. Work began about three weeks after the beginning of Term 1. All the music was learnt first under the direction of Mr Brian Barrett (Staff 68-71). The production, under Mr Tony Howes, (Staff 70-74, 78-82) did not begin until three weeks before the end of term. The main characters had been to a special camp during the Easter break. Guy... Weller (Sc 63-70) in his capacity as Producer Assistant was invaluable during rehearsals. As this was well before the DLD was built the production took place on 1 and 2 May at the Guildford Town Hall. Due to the large number of bookings the dress rehearsal on the Wednesday turned into a performance for two of the boarding houses and the Prep School. The whole cast totaled about fifty with Tim Hood (Ha 69-70) as Ralph Rackstraw and Bradley Chipper (Wb 68-74) as Josephine giving very polished performances. Guy Weller played Sir Joseph Porter with a very impressive English accent. Carl Vine (Wb 67-71) made a wonderful villain as he played Dick Deadeye. Paddy Elphick (Sc/St 64-70) was wonderful as Captain Corcoran, the Commanding Officer, while Patrick Tremlett (He 68-71) was entrancing as Little Buttercup. Mark Dales (SG 66-70) portrayal of the Boatswain was described as buoyant and spirited and his Englishmen song was the highlight of the show. The chorus was made up of sailors, sisters, cousins and aunts. All put together a sterling performance even though the girls did not know what everyone was laughing at when they came on stage. The stage manager was Mr Wayne Garratt. The set was designed by Robert Juniper (Staff 65-74). Mrs Elva Lawe Davies, wife of the Headmaster, was wardrobe mistress, assisted by mothers of students, friends and wives of staff. The orchestra was by arrangement with the Metropolitan Orchestral Society. The Headmaster, Mr David Lawe Davies, played his much-loved cello. The souvenir program sold for 50 cents with funds going to the Save The Children Fund. ROSEMARY WALLER ARCHIVIST
